Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
My husband's friend had a bday party at a wedding hall. The family threw the surprise party and charged people $75 a head. UM we did not go. Totally ridiculous.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
I think the problem here is that if you have never been to one of these places you don't really get it.
It's a room that you get to yourself with your friends. The way THEY charge is 7 bucks/per person/per hour. You MAY bring your own food or BYOB.
When I have done it, we usually carpooled in so there is no "lugging" of said food or drinks.
It really is not a big deal...I think a lot of people are misinterpreting what this really is.
Question for those who think it's "tacky." When you go out to dinner with friends in honor of someone's birthday (say a group of like 10 or 15 people) - do you EXPECT the birthday people to pay for you?? It's the same situation.

no, it's NOT tacky.
if you don't like it DON"T DO IT. BOTTOM LINE.
but enough with the tacky already.
do you want a party hat and a goodie bag when you leave too?
come on...it's dinner out. go or don't go.
how about I think it's tacky to make the guest of honor pay for their own meal PLUS mine when I am supposed to be celebrating THEM.
that is ridiculous to me. I would NEVER do that.
even when going to someone's HOME for a HOUSE PARTY...I offer to bring stuff/contribute. b/c it's THEIR bday, and I feel it's right.
Yep!!! ITA!!!

and this too...what 'lugging" -it's not a camping trip.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
ok so let me get this straight...you not only have to bring your own food and drinks but you also have to pay to use the space to party? Thats a lot to ask esp with a present on top of it

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
The reason I find this an odd invitation is because if I INVITE people someplace for my birthday I would PROVIDE the space, food & drinks. If they ask, I'll let my friends/family know what I will be providing and let them know they can bring something if they like - only if they ask though.
ETA - this includes if I invite people to go out to dinner for my birthday. I will or my DH would pick up the check.

It's tacky to charge a cover charge to go to a birthday party. I wouldn't go.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
I could be wrong but this sounds like it was an invitation for a night out to celebrate her birthday not a birthday "party" If I were in this situation, I would not think of it as a birthday party and Dh and I wouldn't have a problem with paying the $ and bringing drinks and whatever we want to eat. Sounds like fun!

I think if a person is invited to be a guest at a birthday party, they shouldnt have to fork over money to celebrate. To me thats attention seeking.
I know people who do that and it drives me nuts. They send e-vites to a guest list of over 100 people and, in my mind, its like "Look at me for a few hours, bring me presents but buy your own damn drinks." Not my thing. I dont participate.
I couldn't agree more. DH used to be friends with someone that owned a bar. He would invite us to come for the opening and then we would be hit with a $100 tab! How about a buy back guy? Same jackazz would throw his own b-day party in a restaurant that averaged $100 a couple for the meal not including the bar before and then a gift?
Not in my world..that's not reality.
In general, it's not the amount of money, it's the fact that if you throw a party, you pay.
I threw DH a 40th and not one guest took out any $$..it was all paid for.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
this thread is making me want to kill myself
so, Friday May 9th I am going out to a lounge to celebrate my birthday. I am inviting a ton of friends to come to this bar/lounge. there is NO cover. I...the bday girl...will probably not touch my wallet the whole night between my husbands and my friends. THEY are paying for their own drinks...and CON GUSTO at that.
Saturday, May 10th, I am THROWING a PARTY at home for someone. I am inviting a ton of people. I AM PAYING for everything (along with her husband) food, drinks...everything...b/c it's a party and it's at home.
there is a difference. I am just as aghast as some of you...just in the opposite direction!

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
As a karaoke queen (in my own mind at least ), I happen to think these kinds of parties are a lot of fun. I can also understand going into NYC for them, because I remember there not being any private karaoke rooms on LI (though I moved a few years ago).
As some others have mentioned, usually the way it works is that you and your group have a private karaoke room. The karaoke places charge per person per hour (you get the bill at the end). Most places either have their own food and drink menu or you can order from local places and have it delivered.
If it were my party, I'd pay for the room and drinks and I did celebrate part of my birthday at a karaoke bar a few years ago (and I don't consider myself a tacky person ). Everyone had a great time, but if you aren't into karaoke at all (even with a small group of friends), I can understand not wanting to go.

IMO- by inviting people to a party, then expecting them to pay for admission=tickity tackity. I'd rather stay home.
Sorry.....gonna have to agree here.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
I don't know how this post popped back up today...but since it did, I'll give my review of the night.....
It was kind of weird because the place was charging people by the hour, but most people took the train in, and from different towns, so everyone came in at different points throughout the night, so literally a group of people would walk in fresh from the train station, and immediately the fiance of the birthday girl would bop up to them with a manilla envelope, and ask them how long they were going to stay and then he would tell them what they owed. Nice right.
The room was on the third floor, there was no elevator, and I'm convinced they gave "happy ending" massages on the second floor.
The room itself was large enough to comfortably fit about 15-20 people. They invited about 30....it was not comfortable, we were all standing all over, there was no stage, so whoever was singing was just standing in the middle of the group.
There was a cooler, but no one brought ice. I was fine because I had put my bottle of wine in the freezer, and then took it in an insultated wine bottle along with a bottle of jack for my boyfriend. I also brought a corkscrew, and I needed it, there wasn't one there. My boyfriend brought his bottle opener, it happened to be in his coat pocket, good thing, because they people that brought beer that wasn't a twist off didn't think to bring bottle openers.
The couches were scary. it was a broken up leather sectional. Parts of it were ripped, and one section was really smushed down, so that you couldn't really get out of it without help.
So...as far as lugging, we had the wine holder with the magnum of pinio, and the bottle of jack, and a corkscrew. I didn't bring a glass, I resigned myself to the fact that if there weren't glasses there I would just drink out of the bottle-there were however plastic cups, so I was saved. We didn't bring food with us...we shared a pretzel that we got on the way out of Penn. The birthday girl and her sister put out some chips, and then an obscene amount of things covered in chocolate. There were chocolate covered pretzel rods that had been rolled in things (sprinkles, coconut, etc)...chocolate chip cookies dipped in chocolate, chocolate covered oreos, mandolins half dipped in chocolate and then coconut.
A few of the boys got hungry and ordered pizzas from a place that was next door, so that worked out.
All in all I think the birthday girl had a good time, which is the important thing.
My boyfriend and I amused ourselves and he promised me that he would never throw a surprise party for me there.
We took the 1:06 train out of Penn and we're up around 11 for Easter :)
And they lived Happily Ever After!

DH and I went to a party for his friend's wife. His friend only bought the first round of drinks. THen we were on our own. I was so so with that. We did get a small buffet though.
