Re: How Do You Like The Town You Live In?
I live in Lake Panamoka which is part of Ridge & I LOVE IT! Ridge is known as the "Gateway to the Pine Barrens". My neighborhood doesn't have too many lots as big as you'd like but other parts of Ridge do. Its very rural here but its a 7 minute drive to the Tanger Outlets & all of the other shopping in Riverhead. We are pretty close to Rocky Point/Miller place too & there are lots of stores there. No real malls though. There are no 24 hour gas stations or fast food places, just about everything but 7-11 closes at night, there are no big signs, even McDonald's doesn't have the giant arches. 5 minutes to a small beach on the LI sound, 20 minutes to Smith Point beach, 30 minutes to the heart of Hamptons, 10 minutes to the start of the North Fork. People here are genuinely nice, they care more about each other than the cars they drive. Everyone waves or stops to say hello, people offer to help if they see you working on something. The kids here have great school pride, we have awesome sports teams & lots of other wonderful programs. We have a terrific public library. This area is surrounded by state & town Parks & preserves & is loaded with beautiful wildlife including deer & wild turkeys. Lots of people have horses too. Kids grow up here learning how to swim, sail, fish & camp, its a great life that is a rare find on LI these days. I work in Massapequa & it takes me an hour to get to work, I'm think Melville would be about 40 minutes. There are beautiful large homes on an acre or more in Ridge for less than $500,000 with taxes around 10k.
good luck with your search.

West Islip. We moved here 7 months ago and we love it. The schools are supposed to be great (don't have school-age children yet). Close to everything.

Same here. We moved to West Islip almost 4 years ago. Great schools, parks, beaches, close to Southern State and Sunrise Hwy.
Love that Babylon Village is on a few minutes away -another great town.
You should look into Huntington Village, Northport, Massapequa Park and Seaford. All great towns with a real "town" feel.

I LOVE my town
We bought a house in Massapequa in 2006. I love my location, i love my house, and i love my nieghbors and block.
I used to live in new hyde park, and i love this town soooo much more!!!!
I feel like we are still in nassau county, but close to suffolk. I live about a half mile from the southern state parkway and a mile from the 135 and wantagh parkway, it doesnt take me long to get to places like floral park (where my dad lives) or huntington where i love to go to eat!
I 2nd Massapequa....I just love it. I live in Massapequa Park in an area called Old Harbour Green which is such a charming , quaint area with old trees, old homes, wide lawns and a ton of neighborhood character-old wooden street signs, its own beach club...
There is lots of privacy yet my neighbors all know eachother on my block, there are tons of children in my area....great shopping, great schools, i cant say enough about where I live

I love my town (Holbrook). I like the whole feel. IMO I find people more considerate than the town I grew up in. I feel its a nice down-to-earth middle class community.
I love how close I am to major hwys, the train station and Islip airport.
Ditto!!! I have lived here my entire life and really like that people have been here forever and that everyone is so friendly. I also feel very safe where I live.

The key to happiness is the best of everything wrapped up in a nice brick package. Our house is in North Massapequa (Seaford Mailing address) Plainedge schools, south farmingdale water and great neighbors.

I live in Sayville and I absolutely LOVE it.
The downtown area is beautiful, clean and ALIVE. The chamber of commerce is active and there are tons of family oriented events and activities – from big stuff like the Seafood Festival and SummerFest – to smaller things like Family Fridays in the park.
The people are mostly friendly and truly involved and invested in their town. There’s a strong community and many of us shop at the local stores to help keep them thriving. It’s great to walk into a store or restaurant and get a truly heartfelt “Hi! How are the boys!”
It’s a very small town, “New England” feel. The properties tend to be well maintained and the school district is outstanding. Parents seem to be truly involved and collaborate with the administrators and teachers in the school and I love the little programs and events that they have.
On a nice day you can wander the Main Street and check out all the shops, catch a great lunch at one of the wonderful little restaurants and if you are feeling motivated you can catch a ferry over to Fire Island. Or if you want to avoid crossing the water, the little beach on the bay is clean and has a wonderful playground.
this is exactly why DH and I would love to live in Sayville!

We live in Lindenhurst Village & really love it. We rented here first & liked it so much we bought a house. It's a small town feel; the schools are great; it is a community where people grew up here & are now buying homes of their own here. Great town & sense of community

We live in smithtown and I love it here! Its close to the parkways, lots of nearby shopping and restaurants. Great school district, not too far from the water, lots of town beaches and parks. We have 1/2 an acre of property, which for us is plenty, and sidewalks which I didnt realize how rare it was.
I love that this is where my kids will grow up!
Ditto !!!!!!!!!!! Love the sidewalks!!!!!

Re: How Do You Like The Town You Live In?
We live in Ronkonkoma and I like it, but when we are looking at our long-term house I am avoiding Sachem School District only because I am put off by how huge the district is (one of the largest on LI). I've heard they have wonderful special ed programs, but for me I think I'd feel more comfortable with a smaller district. That's a personal decision, but I did a ton of research about school districts before I made my decision.
We're looking at houses in Three Village (Stony Brook, Setauket, E. Setauket), Smithtown, Sayville, and some Connetquot school homes.

Me too... What a great description!
I grew up in and currently live in Lindenhurst Village and I love it. The schools I went to were great and it's definitely close to plenty of shopping. I'm not sure you'll find an acre...but there are houses with alot of property.
My parents house has a large backyard- about the length of a football field, but slightly narrower.
Staying in Lindenhurst, for me, wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing- but I've never lived anywhere else, so I would like to look in Babylon Village, West Islip, East Islip, and Sayville Good luck in your search!

Re: How Do You Like The Town You Live In?
Unless you have a very high budget, to get a property with over an acre you are going to have to go pretty far east, like where KellyFG is.
We just moved to Centereach last year and are very happy here. Close to everything, all the neighbors are so friendly, we have no complaints.

We live in Port Jefferson Station. I absolutely love it. It's close to Smithaven Mall and other shopping on 347. My backyard lines the Heatherwood Golf course so it feels like I'm far removed from the craziness of life when I am home! I highly recommend the area! It's Comsewogue SD which is pretty good. My hubby graduated from Comsewogue HS.

Re: How Do You Like The Town You Live In?
We have an apartment right now in Long Beach. I really love the area, but I feel very isolated from our friends/family. After the summer, no one really wants to come to Long Beach ;).
We aren't buying here because the houses are out of our range, and we don't want a bungalow house ;). DH would never go for a co-op because it's basically the same as apartment living to him.
We are getting ready to close on our first house in Amity Harbor. It's part of the Copiague school district, which I heard is not great, but we don't have children yet. Being a social worker, a lot of things that people complain about with school districts, don't really bother me ;).
Amity Harbor also reminds me a lot of Seaford, where my inlaws and the rest of DH's family live, but is more affordable. It's also really close to the Nassau border and all our family/friends!

Re: How Do You Like The Town You Live In?
Thanks for all the suggestions! This has been extremely helpful. I'm going to look at all the houses on MLSLI this week and show DH!!!
I'm very grateful! It's hard to pick a town to live in if you know nothing about it!
