How in the world do I get my 11 week old to stay asleep for a nap more than 10 minutes?

I watch for all of the signs that she is tired. I get her down to sleep but then she is up and fussing within 10 minutes. I have her stay in her crib but the fussing turns to crying and that's the end of the nap. I know she should be having decent naps during the day. It seems she spends most of the day over-tired b/c she instists on cat napping and it's never enough. It's also terrible getting her down at night b/c she is sooo tired that she fights until the bitter end.

How do I get her passed that 10 minute mark???

what is her schedule? what time is bedtime? how many hours does she sleep at night total? what is your routine like?

I know for us, we had such a hard time with ds's napping (20-30 minutes max) for a long time because he was so overtired all the time (my in laws don't like to let him nap) + he wasn't sleeping well at all at night. So the combo of that really did a number on him and it took a while to get him to nap longer.

I wish had some wise advice. For us, even though I knew my DD needed to nap the ONLY way we could get her to take a decent nap was to sit on the couch and leave her on our chest. If I moved a muscle or tried to put her down she woke right up. She's still not a great napper even at 9 months old but at least when she does nap she will do it on the couch by herself, in her Pack and Play, or in the crib. Good luck!! Chat Icon

It's tough to say what her schedule is at 11 weeks. She hasn't fallen into much of a pattern, much to our dismay.

We start getting her ready for bed at 7PM and she often doesn't "stay" down until 9:30/10:00PM then she will usually sleep until 4 or 5AM. I will nurse her and then she's usually back to sleep until 7'ish. She is ready for a nap about 1.5 hours after waking---sometimes that's the good nap and sometimes it's 20 minutes.

The rest of the day, I just go by when she shows signs of being tired. I rock her and get her to sleep but as soon as she is away from my body she is wide awake and very unhappy with me. And she won't fall asleep on her own, unfortunately. I seriously go through this rocking business up to 8 times a day. I want her to rest and she needs it so badly. Needless to say---none of this easy with a toddler running around.

Well right off the bat i'd say the problem is she's not getting enough sleep at night. Most babies need 11-12 hours of sleep at that age (that's night time sleep that is).

Also, we could never wait for the tired signs because my son (like me) could yawn all day long, even if he's not actually tired. Chat Icon So we had to play around with his awake time and figure out which length worked best. We often wrote them down to figure it out. Maybe try that. For ds, i know at that age he could only go like an hour and 15 minutes in between each nap and he was taking 3- 2 hour naps if i remember correctly. So it definitely sounds like maybe your dd isn't getting enough sleep. Chat Icon

We went through this with Eddie and Renee is having the same problem with matthew right now....maybe its just in the family genes! Anyway, sleep begets sleep, so if you can magically get her to sleep more at night, that could help. Try dream feeding her right before you go to bed and maybe youll get a longer stretch out of her.

As for naps, that watching for sleepy cues thing never worked for me. I went with the every 2 hours instead bc by the time he showed cues he was well on his way to overtired. I did this whether he seemed tired or not.

Other than that, I never found anything that consistently worked...sometimes Id nurse him just to get him to sleep and nap holding him. Easier said than done since you have a toddler at home now too!

Have you tried the swing or something for naps?

Sorry Im not much help!

Our babies are the same age. My 11 week old DS naps but ONLY if he is in the swing, bouncer, car, stroller, or in my arms. Recently I've started to take naps with him. He'll fall asleep in my arms and then I'll put him on my belly and we'll take a quick nap together.

If I put DS in his crib, he'll only sleep for 5-10 minutes. If he's in our arms, he will nap for 1-2 hours. My mom thought I was spoiling him but she does the exact same thing after failing multiple times at putting him in his crib for naps.

Those darn family genes---remind me to bring that up at the next family reunion!

I wish I had the guts to dream feed her. I used to with Piper but Lily---forget it. It can take us 2 hours to get her to sleep, the last thing I am going to even try and do is pick her up and feed her. She would be awake for at least an hour. I'm a-scared to risk it!

I think it's time for me to invest in a couple of the recommended books and dedicate some time to following what they say. I mean this nap thing soaks up at least 2 hours of the day (not including the 2+ hours at night) dancing around with her---20 minutes here and 20 minutes there---it really adds up and it's all for naught. Poor Piper is left to fend for herself, all the while I am hushing her to keep it down. I actually cried today because I felt so badly for her & the lack of attention she is getting! Anyway, I may as well put those energies into trying a technique/ plan that has worked for others.

We should definitely bring it up and hold someone responsible for it! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I did the same thing, I spent HOURS of my day rocking eddie and trying to get him to go to sleep. Eds grandparents used to watch him for us when he was a baby while we were at work and his Nana used to put eddie in the carriage and push him around in the house until he fell asleep and then just pushed the carriage into his room and left him there, LOL! Whatever works!

I don't have any advice, just wanted to offer moral support. I could have written this exact post! My DS is 10 weeks old and we are dealing with the EXACT same thing...I am trying some of the advice the BTDT mommies on here have offered, but we're still working on it. I'm feeling like a mommy failure right now! And to make matters worse, I went to a baby shower this past weekend and one of the other women there was also a first time mommy whose DD is several weeks younger than my DS and she kept talking about the great schedule her DD is on (we have no schedule either), how she sleeps through the night, how's she's a great napper, how her DH does the night feeding for her (she doesn't BF). I wanted to jump across the table and wring her smug, well rested little neck.Chat Icon
Hang in there! I can't imagine dealing with this AND having a toddler...

I wish I could have her sleep in places outside of her crib but I have a toddler running around. I have a white noise machine in her crib to drown out some of the noise but I couldn't have her sleeping in the living room or something like that.

I try to nap with her when my other DD naps but she'll usually have none of it. I even nurse her. Gosh, I wish it would work more often than it does.
