How long do you plan to breastfeed?
I was thinking 6 months.
I'm assuming in the beginning you literally feed the baby off your breast?
Or do you pump your milk from the very beginning?
I am so clueless!

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
Between 3 and 6 months - I do not want to nurse, I plan to pump and bottle feed.
It really depends on my supply - I'm not setting myself up for the "I WILL do this........." you never know what your body will allow you to do -

So true...my sister was planning on bf until the baby was 6 months. She only had milk for 2 weeks, and very little of it. I hope to bf for as long as I can take it.

I don't want to nurse either. People have made me feel guilty about not wanting to nurse. I just don't want to whip out my breasts each time the baby needs to be fed.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
I will BF for as long as my body allows me to, but for no longer than 6 mos. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment if I can't get the hang of it and don't end up BFing at all. KWIM?

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
With my first child, I had planned on BFing for a year but DD had other ideas. At about 7 months, she started to not want it so I pumped exclusively for 4 more months and then we transitioned her to whole milk at just short of a year.
I plan to BF the new baby as long as I can. I hope for at least a year.

keep in mind that if you want to pump instead of BFing, you will still have to "whip them out" a lot
think about it: a newborn eats very often, sometimes as often as 10-12 times a day (as my DS did). if you want to feed the baby breastmilk only, then depending on your supply, you will still be pumping several times a day - and that is time that you won't be spending with your baby (at least, i found that it is extremely difficult to hold a baby while pumping).
i personally am not comfortable BFing my baby in front of anyone except DH. i pump at work and a little bit at night, but when i am home with DS, i only BF.
if you want to pump exclusively you can, but i caution you against thinking it will be easier than breastfeeding it's still a big committment!

I want to try for at least 6 months, hopefully for a year. I don't want to have to buy formula... we'll see how it goes.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
I want to go back to the RE in October of next year to get pregnant again which will require fertility drugs again. So my "plan" is to BF until she is 6 months and try to start weaning her then. I plan to EBF for the first month, then pump so my husband can help out with feedings.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
with ds i had every intention of EBFing for a year... but once i went back to work at the 3 month time point it became harder and harder to maintain my supply because my body simply didn't respond well to the pump. i would pump FOREVER to get only a few ounces. i ended up switching to all formula by the six month time point.
i drove myself crazy obsessing over this issue... which i will NOT, for the life of me, EVER do again.
so this time around i will give BFing a full-fledged try and i will take it as far as i can. but the minute it starts being a source of stress for me i will have no qualms stopping. it's not worth driving myself crazy over.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
I'm thinking 3-6 months and I will want to pump and nurse so we'll see how it works out...the idea is very foreign to me, and I def want to feel comfortable doing it, and I'm terrified I won't be....

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
i personally have no idea. i'll do it for as long as my body lets me.....or the baby wants it...
i asked my 'mommy' friends about this and was told over & over, do NOT obsess about how long you want to do it - just let it happen and see what your body and your baby wants...
so i'm trying hard not to focus too much on what i want - but rather, what i'll be able to do.

If I decide to do it at all, it will only be until I go back to work. That's where I am at as of now.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?
I did 6 months with Alex, until she started developing some sharp teeth (OUCH!). I plan on doing the same if all works out well.
They recommend that you wait a few weeks for your milk supply to regulate before pumping - about 3 weeks. That's what I did.
