Between 3 and 6 months -
I do not want to nurse, I plan to pump and bottle feed.

It really depends on my supply - I'm not setting myself up for the "I WILL do this........." you never know what your body will allow you to do -

I don't want to nurse either. People have made me feel guilty about not wanting to nurse. I just don't want to whip out my breasts each time the baby needs to be fed.

I may be a frigid b*tch - but I don't let people make me feel guilty -
The important thing, IMO is that the baby gets my breastmilk - and to be totally honest I'm still not 100% convinced that formula isn't just as good for baby - But I'm not getting into that argument b/c I really don't have strong feelings about this either way -

I am not at all comfortable with the idea of nursing - And I don't feel the need to explain myself to anyone who questions me -

People keep telling me "oh wait until the baby is born, you'll want to BOND w/ him - blah blah blah" .......- I honestly do not believe my baby has to literally attach himself to my breast in order for me to bond with him .........- For those who feel this way and nurse for this reason, that is their choice and their feelings about their child - I do not have ANY guilt whatsoever about feeling differently about it -

keep in mind that if you want to pump instead of BFing, you will still have to "whip them out" a lot Chat Icon

think about it: a newborn eats very often, sometimes as often as 10-12 times a day (as my DS did). if you want to feed the baby breastmilk only, then depending on your supply, you will still be pumping several times a day - and that is time that you won't be spending with your baby (at least, i found that it is extremely difficult to hold a baby while pumping).

i personally am not comfortable BFing my baby in front of anyone except DH. i pump at work and a little bit at night, but when i am home with DS, i only BF.

if you want to pump exclusively you can, but i caution you against thinking it will be easier than breastfeeding Chat Icon it's still a big committment!

I am not looking to pump b/c I think it will be easier - Most of my friends have said it's actually more of a PITA b/c of the pump, bottle cleaning, storing etc etc- It's much 'easier' (as easy as Breast Feeding can be at all !!) to nurse -

I am just not comfortable nursing -
For ME, the girls are not a food supply, they're decorative and sexual Chat Icon

I will pump b/c it's good for the baby to have my milk - but I will pump alone, and I have already told DH he's not to come anywhere near me when that thing is on ........ -

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?

I'm hoping 3-6 months. I will definitely pump and breast feed so that DH can share in the feedings. I am OK with it if it doesn't work out as I plan.

I will say that you need to to what you feel most comfortable doing. BF is not always easy, and if you are not 100% into it, it could make it harder for you.Chat Icon

Have you met with a Lactation Consultant? Not all of them are totally militant about BFing and some can really offer you some great insight about it.

oh believe me i totally understand!! that is a big reason why i pump so much.

in the beginning it was easier, because i was home alone with DS all day, and i could BF him when he was hungry, and pump for a bottle for when we would go out or when we had company. but as he got older and we went out more, it became easier to just pump (and i also supplement with 1 bottle of formula a day) because i prefer giving him a bottle over nursing in front of other people. now i only BF first thing in the morning and once at night because i am at work (but i BF on the weekends).

i really thought i was going to be one of those mommies who said screw it, i will feed my baby when he is hungry - but i found that i got very tense and uncomfortable even when people were over because i knew i'd have to leave the room to BF him, so i started giving him a bottle and i was so happy because of it.

oh and my DH watched me pump all the time - we both think it is the WEIRDEST thing ever but, as he says, it's good for the baby Chat Icon and saves us $$ Chat Icon

I BF DS for 20 months -- he never had a drop of formula and I plan on going that route again. I did pump when I returned to work part-time at 3 months, but continued breastfeeding when I was with him.

It's really important to me to exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months, then introduce solids slowly and continue breastfeeding at least until 12 months. I feel like the baby will get the best benefits of breastmilk that way.

I am planning for 8 months. When I go back to work I will try to do both. Formula while I'm at work and BFing at night.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?

I'll definately be EBF for the first year. I'm assuming it will end up being more like 2 years like it was with DD.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?

I plan to EBF the first 3 months, and then pump and BF when I go back to work; until DC is about 11 months and starts cows milk.

Im really hoping to not buy 1 can of formula AT ALL this time around.

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?

I plan on EBF when I am home for 8-12 weeks and pump when I go back to work. I BF until my son was 14 months. He had whole milk and breast milk from when he was 11 1/2 months. I would love to do the same or longer for this one.

My goal would be no formula at all. I did supplement less than once can when he was 9 months old when my supply was running low.

I'm not really putting a timeframe on myself...I am going to see how my body responds to it first. I dont want to set any expectations and then be disappointed.

This is the best way to look at it!
I BFed DD up until 11.5 mos and she still gets BM now from our freezer stash. I "planned" on just trying nursing at first and then set goals as time went on, the first one being 3 mos. As time went on it got easier and easier and I stuck with it longer than I ever thought I would!

Re: How long do you plan to breastfeed?

I BF for one year with DD #1 and never pumped except for bottles when I was away from her, which was rarely. I supplemented with formula during the day after I went back to work. There is no need to pump if you don't want to. I hate it!!! I plan to BF DD #2 for a year as well. I will supplement with formula when I go back to work after 7 months for daytime feedings & hopefully continue to BF morning, afternoon & night. I was lucky- it worked out so great the first time.
