How many languages do you know?
How many languages do you know? I took Spanish in HS, and I still remember a good deal of it, but HS Spanish isn't really conversational. I can probably get my point across if needed, but I would consider my Spanish at like a Kindergarten level.

Re: How many languages do you know?
German is my native language even though I was born in the USA. English is secondary. Spanish I studied in school. I can still read and understand it, speaking takes some thought.
This one doesn't count, a couple of phrases in Japanese. Side effect of working for a Japanese company for over 20 years.

Re: How many languages do you know?
2 but the second is debatable.
I learned Spanish in school and my senior year I was in all advanced placement classes. I scored native speaker on the AP exam.
At the time I spoke it pretty well and understood it even better.
Sadly I never kept up with it and lost SOOO much.
I can understand a bit to get by, but I really need to brush up

Re: How many languages do you know?
Barely English.
I took French and Spanish in school and I retained nothing of it.

How many languages do you know?
I took Spanish in high school, but lost it all except for when DH speaks it. For some reason, I understand everything he is saying.

How many languages do you know?
I said 2 fluently. English is my first language. German is what I use because I live here.
I can get by in French, Dutch, and Afrikaans. It’s mostly reading, though.
I have a little bit of knowledge of Slovak.

For this survey, I would definitely put you in the 5+ category. If you can "get by" and read 5 languages, that definitely qualifies as "knowing" the languages.

Hah, it's not easy especially since we have these long-ass words that sometimes even leave me until I break them down in to the 53 English words that it means. Lebensabschnittpartner = the person I am with today (or more aptly, lover or partner)

Yes! My students always are asking for the word for something. I’m like there is no one word.
Longest German word:
Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz
Or someone who is responsible for the way labels are put on beef, or something like that.

You break it down into the individual words Rindfleisch etikttierungs ueber wachungs aufgaben uebertragungs gesetz.
It's still a tongue twister.

Exactly. You break it down by particle of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.).
Fortunately these longgggg words are not used too often, but there are a few that are about 1/3 of that length that are used a bit. Also the pronunciation is straightforward in that you pronounce every letter, unlike English.
The grammar is another story but it makes sense after a while— verbs sometimes at the end of sentences, adjectives endings, cases, articles. I still screw that up sometimes.

Not anywhere near close to that word in length, but I love the fact that Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia is the fear of long words....

Re: How many languages do you know?
2nd is debatable.
I was good at French in HS & college, but I didn't study abroad or anything so i never really go comfortable conversing. I did read Sartre's Huis Clos ( No Exit) in the original French though. and of course i am out of practice.
I just started to brush up on my French (with Duo Lingo)- for no real reason, other than I enjoy it & needed a hobby.
I don't count these at all, but I can recognize some Spanish & know a few German words (can't pronounce them for crap!) from my German colleagues.
I only know food words in Italian & I can say chicken & thank you in Portuguese!

I speak English, and enough Spanish that I was comfortable in Spain, France, and Italy. I know a few phrases in Yiddish and Hebrew, but I am not fluent at all in those two.
