Re: How many languages do you know?
English and Spanish fluently. My parents are from Spain/Cuba and only my mom speaks a little bit of English, so Spanish was my first language until I went to school at 5yrs old.

How many languages do you know?
When I was 5 I moved from New York to the Dominican republic for a few yrs. Being that young, I was able to pick up Spanish right away and became a fluent speaker and reader. Unfortunately, like so many have stated, I lost it since we moved back to the states. My husband and I planned on learning Italian and raising our children as bilingual. That idea flew out the window since both my DC have major language delays so we were told it was actually counter productive to introduce Italian to them. I still plan on learning it myself and ASL.

the same happened to me with DS. dr told me i had to pick one language. it broke my heart, since i'm bilingual (spanish). to this day, i feel guilt that my son doesn't speak my first language. my grandmother doesn't help when she complains that she can't have a conversation with her only great-grandchild.

Re: How many languages do you know?
I said 2 but second is debatable - but I guess I'd say "very debatable." I took it in high school and remember some and can sometimes parse out the meanings of written German or if someone speaks VERY slowly, but I'm not sure it's even enough to "get by."

i would love to understand german. don't know why. i have no connection to the country, but i think it's cool.
Hah, it's not easy especially since we have these long-ass words that sometimes even leave me until I break them down in to the 53 English words that it means. Lebensabschnittpartner = the person I am with today (or more aptly, lover or partner)
Yes! My students always are asking for the word for something. I’m like there is no one word.
Longest German word:
Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz
Or someone who is responsible for the way labels are put on beef, or something like that.
I love this!! I was looking up the longest word in the world (for my 8 year old) and came across this one a while back. The Geman language is crazy!

Re: How many languages do you know?
I speak fluent Spanish as my grandmother doesnt understand English (and I fly overseas to visit her and other relatives on my dads side every few years). I majored in French in college and spent time abroad in Paris, and try to go to France every couple of years to keep my French on a “use-able” level. I only know a few words in Italian and Portuguese.

I voted 1 because my Spanish is probably equivalent to a 2 or 3 year old. I am better as writing and reading it than I am at conversing. Meanwhile, I had 100 in it every year from 5th - 12th grade.
