Back in 2002 we had tried for a few months both on our own and then with Clomid for a few months with no success. We stopped "trying" but never did anything to prevent getting pregnant from that point on but because I was so irregular with my cycles nothing ever happened.
We started seeing an RE in Sept. 2007 and I was put on Provera to bring on my periods and Metformin to try and regulate my cycles and on Dec. 31st of that year I ovulated on my own. We went in for an IUI and did a lot of BD'ing too and got pregnant with Emerson.

So for all intents and purposes once we were serious about getting pregnant and started with the RE we got pregnant the very first time we tried since Dec. was the first time I ovulated.

We got pg on our 2nd month trying, but we were REALLY trying -- OPK's, BDing every day, legs int he air for 30 minutes, supplements, different diet, etc. I am very type - A, though, so when I am ready for something, I go all out. Before we started trying, we never used BC of any kind and never got PG

We werent trying to get preggo with DS we just werent preventing...
But my friend had to try 7 months with her first and 9 with her second. Another friend was over a year with #2.
My friends OB told her that due to her age (under 30) he would recommend her trying for 9 months-1 year before worrying about any intervention

I'll say 3 months. It actually took a lot longer, but that was before we "knew what we were doing". At 1st we threw caution to the wind, but once we cracked down, understood my cycles and used OPKs, it was the 3rd month.

Alot of years...we ended up doing IVF and got pregnant on our first try.
If you are over 35 and have been trying for 6 months or more I would see the RE. If you are under 35 and have been trying for less than a year try buying the clear blue fertiility monitor...it's $$$ but it works. After a year if you are under 35 I would see an RE. Good Luck
