How many of you have tile, porcelain etc living and dining room floors?
I currently have worn out wood floors and thinking about replacing them with tiles. Do think it would be too much I have an open floor plan do its living and dining area. My mom thinks it would look too much like a Florida home
Wdyt? What do you have tiled?

Ha, I'm in FL and 70% of our house is a light beige 18" tile. Kitchen and den (or could be used as dining room) is cherry wood and bedrooms are carpeted. We have several 5x7 throw rugs throughout the house, so it's not as "cold" as it sounds. But i love the look of tile or wood, instead of carpeting.

I don't. it may look too "Florida"
I have a very open 1st floor, essentially 1 large room divided by the stairs and a bathroom in the back. we tiled the kitchen(1/4 of the downstairs), and made the dining room and living room wood.
I like what we have. I origionally was pushing to tile the dining room too.... I'm 50/50 as to whether we made the right choice.
I think tiling the whole downstairs would have felt "weird" don't know why

Tile is very hard on feet and it's cold. My mom tiled her dining room and living room and regrets it. And yeah, she lives in Florida!

I want to replace ours with the tile that looks like wood. But I have radiant heating in the floors so it won't be cold in the winter. Without the floors being heated I would never do it.
Also I am not a fan of the normal square tiles in a house unless you are in a warmer climate.

We have an open plan from kitchen to dining room so we just continued our tile across - and we honestly love it, but it's not a standard white tile - it's hard to describe but I think it has a more Mediterranean feel to it. We are considering doing the wood-style tile for the living room and hallway (NOT regular bathroom or kitchen tile) just for the durability of it - hard wood floors tend to need to be resanded/finished every few years. Also, future-SIL's father is in the tile business and has helped us out with regards to teaching us how to lay tile.

Re: How many of you have tile, porcelain etc living and dining room floors?
We're doing renovations in our new home and decided to tile the hallway entrance. Our living/dining rooms and den are hardwood. We are refinishing the living and dining areas and laying new wood in the den. The hallway cuts the space between these areas and thought it was a nice way to break it up since some of the wood will be new and the other refinished so it may not match exactly.
I also happen to really love the tile we're putting down and wanted to incorporate it into the house.

Re: How many of you have tile, porcelain etc living and dining room floors?
Assuming you are on Long Island - A lot of buyers really don't care for tiles in the living spaces (e.g., living rooms, dens, etc.). Even in a dining room, I would say my buyers prefer wood floors over tiles.
If you like tile and it works for you and your family, then go for it! But from a resale standpoint, it may not go over as well as wood floors or another flooring option.
All tile would not be my personal choice... I think it can tend to feel a little cold or sterile. In some of the homes I see, it can also feel a little dated. Not all the time, but I think it's harder to make all tile work for my personal taste.
Like EandF, I have tile in my entry foyer that leads into the kitchen, but have hard wood floors (with area rugs) in my formal living and dining room (and carpet in my lower level den, as well as the finished basement).

If you really want to tile, I suggest the tile that looks like wood. It will be A LOT better for resale then regular tiles.

It reminds me of Florida too much. I don't like it for a living area. Too cold and sterile

I agree with your mom... Tile in the living room is only for homes in warm climates... And it makes sense bc tile stays cold... I have ceramic tile in my kitchen and dining area... They stay cold as ice and you need to wear slippers or your feet freeze... I cant imagine having that in the living room as well

Re: How many of you have tile, porcelain etc living and dining room floors?
Do not do it!!!!!
The house we moved into has tile floors throughout. It's crazy!!!! And we have been quoted 20,000 to remove it and install hardwood. It is hard on your back and everything. We'd constantly wear shoes in the house which I hate because then the floors get more dirty.
Do not do it!!!!!!! I cannot tell you how much I hate them.
