Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
All of my pets (my horses included!) are rescues.
My (now deceased dog) came from NSAL. I got my cat through a vet's office. She was to be PTS at the animal shelter and one of the receptionists brought her to the vet's office to adopt out instead.
My 1st horse was rescued from a horrible neglect / abuse situation. He was seriously underweight and had never been properly handled. My friend rescued him, but he was too much for her, so he came to be mine.
My other horse I adopted through a rescue organization that rescues horses coming off the track after racing careers.
I will add, though, that I am not against purchasing animals through reputable breeders -- or, in the case of horses, through private sellers or reputable breeders. (Especially in the case of horses b/c many people simply do not have the experience and knowledge to properly handle and rehab a rescue horse.)

Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
We got Kasey from a shelter out east. Actually she was living in a foster home at the time.
We found her online and contacted her foster mom who works at the shelter.

You can adopt almost any type of animal...even animals considered "livestock." We just do not see it as much on LI as upstate or out of state.
If you check out petfinder.com, there is a list of birds, lizards, etc.

Don't feel stupid. I think they are not as good at "advertising" that they have pets other than Dogs & cats.
And yes, it is a great feeling giving a needy pet a home!

Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
Don't feel stupid! How would you know?
I don't think it's that they aren't as good at advertising. It's that most of us aren't looking to rescue a horse or a lizard - and most livestock and exotic animal rescues are not looking to advertise to most people, as most people don't have the skills, facilities, etc. for those types of animals.
Additionally, livestock and more exotic animals will NOT adopt to first-time owners (at least, not the reputable ones, IMO)... so they are out to get more experienced people on hand, not those with little experience. In other words, if you don't really know where to look or what you're looking for, you wouldn't find them.
But yes, you can adopt almost any kind of animal. And, I will give my PSA -- First time horse owners should NOT get rescues. The sorts of animals going through horse rescues often have training and/or medical issues that novice owners are not equipped to deal with -- and it can be very dangerous for both the horse and the owner. (Very different from many smaller-animal adoptions!)

Between myself and my husband we have had 10 dogs in our adult lives, 7 of which were rescued, one was a pet shop dog (oh yes...this is why I am ADAMANT about the education), and 2 were from reputable breeders.
I just noticed it said "pet." add to the above 3 cats, 4 leopard geckos, a cockatoo, and a box turtle.
Ok, you guys are like Wild Kingdom!!! That is fantastic!!

Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
OMG we are. We always have animals in our houses (both of us growing up). I really wanted to move to a farm, but DH wanted to stay on LI.
In my younger life, I also had Burmese Pythons (one of which grew to 13 1/2 feet), Cockatiels, zebra finches, Guinea Pigs, a hamster, an Iguana, a bearded dragon, and a Columbian Rosy Tarantula!

Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
I have 2 rescues and 2 I bought from breeders... and I would buy another cat in a heartbeat...
BUT because I choose to buy my cats (from reputable breeders) I feel I need to give something back, so I also volunteer.
I manage a feral cat colony of approximately 35 cats at a warehouse. I found homes for 23 cats & kittens from this and 2 other colonies (but there are stil 35 left for a total of 58). I feed and water them every day (if I go away I have to have someone 'cover' for me), have built them shelters, I trap them and have them fixed or get vet care if they need it, all out of pocket. So although I have 2 ‘spots’ in my house that are taken up by purchased cats, I have 35 others that I care for every single day to make up for it.
My ferals (that I can tell apart) are: Einstein, Orion, Scratchy, Jenny, Gunnar, The Wizard, Brother, Kricket, Tom, Joe Frasier (he’s missing an eye and the other one is all messed up), Bunny, Salty, Wheaty, Yuki, Echo, Tinity (he only has 3 legs), Sylvester, Clarice, Majica, Luna, Weezy… that’s all I can think of off the top of my head... There are a bunch of just 'all black' cats that I sadly can't tell apart, but I have had 28 of them fixed and there's about 5 - 8 more that I need to still trap. I'll try to take pics.
I see nothing wrong with buying from a reputable breeder, but for me, I felt I needed to help the unadopted animals in another way.

Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
We rescued Misty at 8 months through the Weimeraner Rescue (AKC)....she was purchased from a petstore and they couldn't "deal" with her anymore.
We also rescued Espresso from a pet store in Copaigue - they did adoptions out of the store and I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him.

Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
I got my kitty Phoebe from a shelter. She was close to a year when we adopted her. I got my other kitty Holden from a foster care person. He was 8 weeks when we saw him and said we wanted him and 12 weeks when we took him home (he had to wait for his last set of vac b/c Phoebe is a cat flu cat).
I had 4 other cats growing up (that have passed) and all of them showed up at our house or they were kitties from other cats in the neighbourhood with owners who didn't fix them .

Re: how many of you rescued their pet?
My parents took in a pregnant stray. She gave birth to the kittens on my parents front lawn. My mother was able to give 2 kittens to her friends, my parents kept one (and the mom) and I took a kitten as well... He was a little furball, and now he's huge..LOL.
