How many people are living in apartments?
Just wondering!
Sometimes I get really sad seeing all of the beautiful houses with their awesome holiday decorations, gourmet kitchens, play rooms, etc.
I feel like we're never going to be able to afford a house! Especially now with twins on the way, having to afford daycare, needing a new car that we can all fit in....

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We're not exactly in that situation, but similar. We rent a house. So it is a house, but it's not OURS. And it's not the type of house we would ever buy. I often get sad too, thinking how could we possibly ever afford to buy our own house?? It doesn't seem like we ever get any closer to that possibility. So I feel your pain!

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We're in a 1 bedroom! Our coop is on the market and we are house hunting but it's been a slow process. I HATE not having a backyard for DS, I would lay outside on the grass with him for hours since he loves it so much. We'll settle for the park for now.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We bought a coop couple of years ago , I love living in an apt (other than crazy neighbors upstairs, but they'll be moving soon I hope) , have always lived in an apt. can't imagine living in a house, never really wanted to, BUT I know we will move to a house some day especially after we have more than one child and if we decide to move out of NYC . Plus DH wants a house. I'll actually be happy moving to a bigger apt even though our current one is pretty good size Plus I'm not really a holiday decoration kind of girl, I enjoy looking at them but not really into it. I do however put up little things here and there around the apt just so DD can see and enjoy.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We are moving into a new two bedroom apartment in two weeks and it is going to save us a couple hundred dollars a month, but we do lose space. We will make this sacrifice as long as it takes to buy a house. We r determined!!
Today im optimistic... usually I cry...lol

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
im in an apartment but its in my mom's house. its a hi ranch and we have the whole bottom floor which has an extension so we've changed some things and made it into a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment. the problem is our taxes are so high here that we struggle with the mortgage (me, dh and my mom). it'd be easier probably to sell the house but that stresses me out!
i dont see us EVER affording a house in an area i'd like unless we move out of state

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We are in a 2 bedroom apartment in a complex. We decorate inside and out even though we are on the top floor. Its not huge and spacious but its ok for us for now.
I always imagine the house we would own but I know that we wont be able to ever afford to buy our own house. We rented a house for a year but then it was sold and we had to move.
Our goal is to be able to rent another house in a few years.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
Us... it kills me, because DH owned a home when him and I first met, but with the taxes, and the house needing so many renovations, we had no choice but to sell, and sell without seeing a profit. So, now we are in a complex, spending way too much and I really don't see us ever being able to afford a downpayment while paying so much $$$ in rent. But, we have a roof over our heads, food on the table, clothes on our backs and are all healthy, so I am extremely grateful for that.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We rent a 2 bed/2 bath in northern manhattan.
Our rent, while reasonable for the city, along with daycare expenses makes it difficult for us to save for a downpayment. It is crazy to me that DH and I have great jobs with good salaries and still feel like we are struggling sometimes.
But I take solace that we have no debt and that this is temporary. We will someday own a home - and in the meantime, I am taking advantage of the low stress that comes with renting!

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We rent a duplex townhouse in a complex, so it's like the best of both worlds. We have 2 floors and a small yard, but can call maintenance to come fix any problems. But I would eventually like to own, just don't see that happening anytime soon.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We rent. We're in a great, small complex, in a nice, quiet building. I'm a little sad we're going to be leaving here.
We're leaving LI in the next few months for Fairfield County, CT since DH got a job there which is a fantastic opportunity.
I actually spoke to an acquaintance that is a mortgage broker tonight. We went over all our options and what we need to have to go for a mortgage, minimum down payments, how PMI works etc. We are hoping to buy next fall when DH finishes his 1 year apprenticeship and finds a permanent position. Until then, we're going to continue to rent. We're hoping to find a townhouse or even a small house to rent while we pay down our debt and save $.

I tried to write that we also rent a duplex townhouse.. we have 3 bedrooms and 1 1/2 bedrooms and a little back courtyard.
The rent is decent for a 3, cheaper than renting a comparable house.
But it stinks not having playroom- and constantly having to "edit' our belongs so as not to overgrow the space.
We can probably get a place, we have money for a down- but it is the taxes, and the knowing that whatever we bought would need a LOAD of work and $$$. Honestly, with the amount of time we are both home- me investing all my time in the business, and DH working- it almost isn't worth it right now.
We hope to own something one day, but right now, it just isn't a priority.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
strange situation but we are in an apartment in my parent's house -- but we pay the mortgage.
my mom decorates the windows and we decorate the outside so we get to do that
but, i never click on "pictures of my new nursery!" b/c DD will never have that. . . I know LOGICALLY that its not harming her but. . . still makes me sad!

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We are in a 3br apt now (but the brs are teeeeeny!) and when DH and I are all home with DS and the dog I want to punch someone. We're currently buying a house - but it's the SMALLEST house in the WORLD I think We wanted to stay in the city so location trumped size for us. I have yard envy, kitchen envy, etc etc. I live in a densely populated section of Queens so I have a ton of friends here with 2, 3, 4 kids in apartments as well. If you have the right space it can work, even if you have to use the space creatively kwim? But don't lose faith, you are still SO young, you WILL get your house one day!!!

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
im going to say to the flipside of this, that owning a home these days is not easy. we bought a home in PA b/c we couldnt afford anything in NYC. in 3 years since we've been our here, our costs have gone up considerably..taxes, oil heat, electric bill, water, etc.
we are basically house poor and there are days I wish i could sell and go back to renting.
owning a home is not everything its cracked up to be.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
this is something that depresses me daily. but then i hear from my friends who do own a house and all the money they are constantly putting into their house, the constant headaches, and DH & I joke that we don't want to every buy. that makes me feel a little better.
and i live in an apt in a house and i am able to decorate outside and i decorate inside, i make do with what i am able to do.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
We live with my parents We moved back to LI after living in Northern VA in a huge townhouse. DH got a job in NYC and I was already on maternity leave from teaching. We were hoping that we would be able to buy something here after a year (it's been a year now) and we are nowhere near ready. It is just impossible to do on one salary. It is not like I can just go out and get a teaching job here either. I have been looking into possible part time jobs doing early intervention or something just to bring in more $$$$. While my parents have been more than accommodating for us, it is still so stressful. We have the upstairs two bedrooms and a bathroom to ourselves. They also put a folding door at the bottom of our stairs to make it more private, and to keep the animals away! I hope we are out by spring but I am not holding my breath.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?
Us! We live in a junior 4 Co-op and we love the location (family friendly neighborhood that's walking distance to everything we need including the subway to get to work, the supermarket, and two big malls), we could definitely use more space! We are actually thinking of repurposing our dining room to give us more space, but we have to see. In order to move to a bigger place, we'd have to shell out a lot of money (broker fee, new security, first month, movers cost) plus obviously more rent each month. Doesn't make sense right now.
We just spent a week with my friend in a nice big house where DS got to run around all day. It made me and DH so sad! I wish we could give that to DS, but right now it's just not an option. I do also think about all the costs of owning a home and honestly, I don't look forward to that. Such a crappy situation to be in, I totally understand!

I live in a pretty big 3 br. But its a walk up and a huge PITA to get in and out with twins. We will never own a house in LI or Queens. Its just not possible for us.
