Re: How many people are living in apartments?

we rent an apartment. while it is somewhat spacious and there is adequate storage (its good but the collector i am could always use more like a garage space) i do wish for a house. a nice 2 floor, huge backyard house!! i do love this apartment but i'd like an upgrade to home ownership. when we do buy, it will probably be upstate, rockland county area.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

I live in an apartment upstairs from my parents. It's a 1 1/2 bedroom. I say 1 1/2 because DS room is very small; firs his crib armoire and asmall changing table. There is only room to walk between the crib and changing table. But I do have a pretty big living room and dining room. Honestly my husband and I are separated and have been for 5 months. If it weren't for us living in my parents home I'd be homeless. I am so blessed that I pay such a small rent and that they are so close by and help me with everything. I hope to one day own a home but I could never do it alone so it's going to be a long time from now!

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We sold our co-op to rent an apt while we house hunted. I honestly love renting at the moment. We don't have to worry about any upkeep on the apartment, we call the landlady (who is wonderful) when anything goes wrong and she fixes it immediately, no taxes etc. We are in a two bedroom and it's fairly large and we'll even stay there for a while after we have a second baby. We have a huge private deck where we have plenty of barbecues and even a rooftop deck that overlooks the Statue of Liberty. We moved to downtown Brooklyn to be closer to work and although we still want that house on LI, the thought of not being able to hop on the subway and be home to DD in 20 minutes makes me sad.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We are in a two bedroom apartment now. I actually really like apartment living. We have a big two bedroom and the only reason we are looking to rent a house when we move is because we have a big dog and it would be nice when it's raining not to have to bundle up the baby to go let her out.

When it snows and someone comes to shovel for us or plow, when my sink breaks and someone comes to fix it, etc, I LOOOVE living in an apartment even more.

As far as owning vs renting. We don't know where we are going to wind up long term so right now I don't mind not being tied down to a mortgage and a house.

im going to say to the flipside of this, that owning a home these days is not easy. we bought a home in PA b/c we couldnt afford anything in NYC. in 3 years since we've been our here, our costs have gone up considerably..taxes, oil heat, electric bill, water, etc.

we are basically house poor and there are days I wish i could sell and go back to renting.

owning a home is not everything its cracked up to be.

I think that sometimes too... There are days where I wish I lived in a town house that was more affordable.

Me too!! I miss my renting days!! I feel like I had options then. Now, thanks to this crummy market, I am stuck in a house with an upside down mortgage. Chat Icon

I AGREE completley! We bought our house in the height of the market and are def house poor! Sometimes I wish we just rented and didn't have so much overhead

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We live in a 1Br / Junior 4 in Northern Bx.

We just moved from a 4 bedroom x-tra spacious home in Atlanta and to be honest the only thing I miss is the space. The stress of a home is no joke. (I've own 2 at the same time and its a PITA). New homes at that and you still find yourself doing things constantly...

We are currently looking for a townhome to purchase.. I don't think I ever want a house but a townhouse or duplex will do for us. DH begs to differ but I rather have a smaller space and have less to-do's and more travel and us time.. Chat Icon
