Yea that's why I said it really depends....I'm greek so our baptisms are similar to what the jewish faith does for bar/bat mitzfahs (sp?). We "have" to invite a ton of family so I would say a typical baptism for us is minimum 100 people....that's why it adds up. I wish I could limit it to a smaller group and spend less :(

I was going to say the same thing. It cant be based on the Greek Baptisms because we are crazy. The baptism festivities don't differ much from those of a wedding.
We booked ours for this coming Jan for the twins and overall it will probably run us about 12k for about 150 people.

LOL for real. Just last weekend I had 30 people here for a "small" BBQ. Mind you it was only planned that morning. hahaha

Re: how much did you spend altogether on Baptism?

I'm working on mine right now. Will be about 50 people at a local Huntington restaurant. Private room, sit down service. I'll provide cake and wine, and run a liquor tab for the rest.

Not planning on favors or centerpieces!!! Will do invitations for less than $50 online.

I'll come in just under $2,000 once we account for tax and tips.

Was going to do it in our home, but as a frequent entertainer....I'd like to be waited on for once!

probably around $1500, but I slef catered so that kept the cost reasonable.

we had about 50-60 people at a space we rented near the church.

my SIL (the Godmother) paid for the cake.

DS #1 I spent about $2500. I did it in an Italian restaurant.

DS #2 we did it at a Japanese Hibachi place. It was about $3000.

We're keeping it REALLY simple because money is tight with me being out of work right now. My ILs offered their backyard. About 50 people. We're doing heroes and making pasta salads. I saw this idea for a cross made out of cupcakes online and we figured we would do that, fruit salad and cookies for dessert. MIL and SIL offered to make the favors (chocolate covered oreos, they made them for my other SIL's engagement party favors and they were AWESOME). We like to get really creative on both sides of the family, so that helps.

Re: how much did you spend altogether on Baptism?

Hmm...about $300 Chat Icon 40 people

We had it in the lounge/recreation room in my dad's office building, I didn't send invites because I decided to do the party last minute, everyone chipped in and helped with making food. I spent money on decorations, food, cake (Costco) and beer/wine/soda. No favors (although- I was planning on making chocolate covered oreos- I just ran out of time) I ordered thank-yous with her pic from pear tree greetings.

ETA: This doesn't include the $150 church donation

LMAO!!! We just had to move DD's 1st birthday party from our backyard to a restaurant because we were "keeping it small" and still couldn't fit everyone in our back yard!

Re: how much did you spend altogether on Baptism?

We did the party in our backyard - bought a tent, rented tables and chairs and DH bbqed. With the food, drinks, rentals, everything - it was probably around $1500 for 50 people. I was kicking myself - it was a crappy cold day in May and I could have probably had it in a restaurant for the same amount of money!

OMG!!! You all are stressing me out!!

I don't remember what we spent on DD#1. We had it in the yard...blah blah blah.

With DD#2, I don't think we can have it in the yard, cause it will probably be mid-oct when we might have it.

We really can't afford $1500-$2000 on a christening in a hall or restaurant ....UGH!!!

This question is really open ended....really depends on what kind of festivity you are looking to do, where you have the baptism, the amount of people you invite, whether you get a band, dj, photographer, videographer, etc. I'm doing DS's baptism at the north ritz club and getting a dj, photographer, videographer, kids entertainment, centerpieces, invites, (godparents buy the outfit and give the favors)...it is costing a pretty penny bc it is peak wedding season and they didn't cut the price just bc it is a baptism. Buttt I have friends and relatives who just did simple invites and dinners and only spent $5-$10k so it really depends!

wow, i never realized baptisms are such a big deal. i mean i get the importance but thats Chat Icon Chat Icon

i'm def on the lower end of the spectrum. DH JUST got back to work after 6 mos laid off from union & i'm on maternity leave most likely to be SAHM for a while.

You should do what you feel comfortable with and what you can afford.
We did both parties at home. We could not afford to do big parties and I am surprised with so many people being laid off and saying how expensive things are that they are able to afford such luxuries like this.
Personally, if I had that much money for a party (and it is double or triple if you are spending it for 2 or 3 children), it would be put away for my children for college.
But that is me. Everyone does what they feel is right for them.

Don't get stressed. I think many people can't afford that either.

I imagine that the people having what you call "luxury" parties are not the same people who are laid off and are having trouble financially.

there are some people that are doing well right now and can afford to plan a nice party and put away for college.

we have what is called a plan. we put away a certain amount towards his college to reach our goal. whatever is left over is what we use for fun. I figure that this is not a genius plan that only I can come up with, but that in fact many other families do this too.

that being said, you do whatever you want and can do. no one should make you feel badly no matter what kind of party it is, big OR small. especially for a religious event. I cannot think of anything more un-God like.

We have smaller christenings in my family.

Invites I got from I think vistaprint, probably for free in the long run with their crazy deals Chat Icon
No favors
No entertainment
No centerpieces
Sit down Lunch at a restaurant with immediate family and CLOSE limited amount of friends. Beer & wine only. Cake was provided.

I think you just have to do what you can do. I don't think anyone EXPECTS anyone to do anything.

Ours was very similar to this.
Had it out because I did not want to do or plan a thing. Just wrote the place a check and that was it.
No entertainment
No centerpieces
Very small crowd
Beer and wine package
Nice sit down menu
Easy, inexpensive favors that I orderd online
Cake was provided by the place
Nothing fancy
Done.

I agree
we spent more than other people b/c our immediate family and closest friends comes out to over 100 people. . . so we had to have it out

i am so glad we did it that way bc trying to save money and do her first birthday party at home, we had to cut so many people out and probably hurt them in the process!

This is such a weird thread - if people have the party that means they have the money somehow. . . mine actually came from an envelope in my night table drawer LOL

oh and in case anyone wants to rob me, we used the rest of the money for DD's birthday party so its all gone now lol

hahah oopps - i was actually referring to the OTHER thread asking how you paid for it

this one is normal Chat Icon

Oh, I understand that. We were not laid off either when our children were baptised.
We also have saved for our children's education since they were born whatever we could afford at different times.

Re: how much did you spend altogether on Baptism?

i'm in agape's boat- we're greek too, and heaven help ya if you dont invite your third cousins second wife's kid... you know? we have a huge family, and cutting it down was tough.

we had 120 people (includes like 15 kids) at little mans christening, at the fox hollow. we had balloon centerpieces and a dj. Figure we spent 9-10 thousand there. not a huge menu, and just soda and wine.

forget about favors- my sister (godmother) buy the favors-which was just a scroll tied up with jordan almonds and a donation to a charity- i don't know what she spent on that. she also had to buy his cross and his outfit.

thing is with greek people, a baptism is a celebration of three sacraments- this is our first communion, baptism and confirmation all in one- just one party, so its not like we'd have to do another religious thing all over again

so dont get scared when you see other peoples numbers- you have to take into consideration your religion and your family, and what's a typical celebration for your family. if i had a small christening at a restaurant with no dance floor, my family would be like "ok, this is different" whereas if someone else's family came to our christening, theyd be like "what, no dancing elephants? no circus clowns?" lol

ps- this was not considered a luxury party- this is the norm for us. and trust me, my hub and i paid for this ourselves and really arent in the greatest of financial situations

Re: how much did you spend altogether on Baptism?

we spent a lot, some might say too much - we paid to fly the pope in on a private jet to preside over the baptism, and for an extra $500,000 "donation"
they said we could have DS declared a saint right away. i think it was worth it.

just kidding.

location: in-law's yard with tent/tables

food: made ourselves

cake: made cupcakes and put on cupcake stand

favors: "blue & white" cookies from jonathan lord bakery - VERY yummy and very very reasonably priced...packaged individually and everything! with a little baby angel sticker that had his name and the date

invites: bought at target and printed them myself. they were very nice.

total cost: MAYBE $200 - i've learned to just do what you can do, and not even think twice about whether or not you've done "enough", ya know? don't stress :)

We spent around $3k.
We rented a rec room at a local park with opened up to the outside grounds. We also got a DJ, catered from a local italian restaurant, got a cake but made all other desserts and did M&M favors. Next time around, I'm just going to have it at a restaurant without a DJ.. I feel like it was such a waste.
