I also give to my sanitation man -- he gets $40 cash

But honestly we have someone new delivering our mail every other week it seems and to be honest I don't see why I should tip someone for doing their JOB.
My hubby is a cop- he is providing a service too- he doesn't get tips.
I just don't get where we draw the line on who should be tipped and who shouldn't....

We do not tip the mailman, UPS or FEDEX people. As you said they are just doing their job ,that's what they get paid for.
I don't tip either. But we do have issues with the mail and at least once a week, I'm complaining to the Post Office.
But even with that said, mail carriers are not allowed to accept cash tips (they can actually lose their jobs over that!) but they can accept tips in the form of gift cards not exceeding $20.

I agree 1000%.
I tip waitresses and waiters. They work off of tips.
I tip my hairdresser, because she doesn't get the full cost of what I pay.
And if someone goes ABOVE and BEYOND (like the guy that helped me drag my Christmas tree to the car the other day) I'll give them a tip.

We tip him $20.00 - he is awesome though and very nice.
We use to tip the sanitation guys, but after a few bad experiences with them I stopped.
Other then that I tip no one.

huh?? tip the mailman?? not here!
do i get tipped for airing the correct commercials and avoiding product conflicts or making special requests to air in the "a" position?
i basically tip waiters, waitresses, nail salon people.. im sure there are a few others..but basically anyone in the service industry making minimum wage or below..

I don't tip the mailman. I have never met or even seen the mailman, and he (or she??) has not gone above and beyond in any way, to my knowledge.

I just moved in this September I gave 10 dollars cash- next year I will give at least $20.
To me the holidays are a time to say thanks to people who provide a service to me- and yes they do get paid but what they do helps me and I am thankful for them.

For the past few years, I've given $ or a GC to Dunkin' Donuts. But recently I've decided that I'm not tipping him anymore. He def does not do anything more than his job for us and he gets paid to do that. When he has a box to deliver or something that needs to be signed for, he will bring that to the door but still leave the rest in the mailbox. To me, he is not earning anything extra.
Now the FedEx and UPS guys, they're getting tips, they've covered my boxes with plastic if I wasn't home, and offered to carry the boxes inside and up the stairs for me. The garbage men ALWAYS get a good tip from me because they never give me a hard time about anything I put out. They take it all from me. To me, these people have earned a tip, the mailman not so much.

I guess it depends on your mailman, what they do for you and how well you know him. our regular is wonderful but he is out and the substitute is making lots of mistakes.
my dad is a mailman and my brother is a cop. someone mentioned what is the difference in relation to tips and why doesn't a cop get tips but a mailman does:
i think this is because you don't know who your 'regular cop' is unless you have weekly concerns needing a cop and its always the same cop - who could you tip? the mailman comes 6 days a week for the whole year and if its always the same person you may want to appreciate their work directly to you in the heat, snow and rain. They don't just have just your block - they have many and the work inside the building is hard (and surprisingly dirty!! ) too.
Cops work just as hard and risk their lives but they are not working directly with you daily for you to tip them.
Post office I do not believe is still technically 'federal' anymore.
Receiving cash tips is a breakable rule with lots of loop holes. I am sure everyone appreciates a tip. it probably makes their day.

Of course the post office is still federal - "technically" and otherwise. The fact that accepting cash tips is a commonly broken rule doesn't make that any less illegal.
