HOW much for 1st grade supply pack???

How much is your school asking for those custom made, ready and waiting for you in September, school supplies bags? My son's school has the AUDACITY to offer the aforementioned supply bag for $70!! I can get all of it in WalMart for less than half that price! Are they kidding?

Wow and I thought $49 was a lot...considering I would still have to buy him some supplies separate.

Mine is $49 too...plus extra supplies

worth the convenience and the saved gas and agita (and buying extras at the store)

I've never heard of that? Chat Icon Here in NC, they give you this ridiculous list and you buy them yourself. And yes, it's mutiples of everything. And the part I don't like is that whatever you buy is a free for all. Your child doesn't get what you buy. They just take from the "pool" as needed.

Does this price include a back pack too?

Mine was never that high and I love doing it as I barely have to shop for anything.

Supply packs from our PTA were about $25-$40, depending on what supplies and for what grade. I think I paid $35 for grade 2.

That is ridiculous. Especially when things like crayons and glue are like .10 for name brand at back to school time. Of course it's right in line with every other overpriced PTA fundraiser.

Ours went up with every grade. School supply pack prices are really insane, but even getting everything on my own cost me just as much! Wait until you have to buy them a scientific calculator too!! Aghhh!

It's not ridiculous at all! As a teacher, it is much better for EVERYONE to do communal supplies. Whether a child has "his" Ticonderoga #2 pencil or "someone else's" makes no difference! It leads to no fighting over supplies and no one hoards anything. It's great for sharing.

These supplies are used throughout the year. So you may think buying 3 dozen pencils is ridiculous, but if you spread that over 10 months, you're talking about less than 1 pencil per week.

The teachers aren't taking these supplies home to their kids. THey're pooling them and taking them out as needed.

I agree as a parent who has bought these boxes for years. I save a lot of money too as I have priced out the things they need (it is not always the things on the 1 cent sale too). Unfortuantely they only do this for the elementary school. Wish they did it for middle school too as I have to shop for that too and I had to buy a scientific calculator last year. Luckily it was only $15 the one my dd needed.

There is no way you are saving money with these boxes. Maybe compared to the full retail price of those items. The entire point of selling them is for a PROFIT by the PTA. It's a fundraiser. I have no issue with fundraisers, but I hate for people to think they are getting a "deal" on something when they are not.

I think it all depends on what is needed and what you pay. I also think it is a great time saver and great if you don't like to deal with crowds.
I have compared prices and many things are not your typical pens and pencils. There are many things you don't find on sale.
I go to PTA meetings so the next time I will take a look at the profit the PTA makes off of these which in turn, helps my child anyway and me later in the year not to have to pay for something else that I might have to anyway without this fundraiser.

I just wrote a check for $45.00 for my son's first grade supplies.

As to whether or not you save money by going through the PTA, last year my neighbor kept all the receipts from the items she purchased for her son who was entering first grade. The amount she spent was almost exactly the amount she would have had to have paid to get the PTA box. . . but she had to go to four different stores to get what she needed. That convinced us both to purchase the box for the upcoming school year.

The box that the PTO offered for Kindergarden was $30.

I plan on buying the supplies myself.

Dd's was $36. Not sure if I am spending more money than buying everything separate, but for a few dollars it's worth it to night deall with the back to school messes, shopping, searching etc.
Last year I didn't buy it because I thought it would be fun to shop for themChat Icon
