I've never heard of that? Here in NC, they give you this ridiculous list and you buy them yourself. And yes, it's mutiples of everything. And the part I don't like is that whatever you buy is a free for all. Your child doesn't get what you buy. They just take from the "pool" as needed.
It's not ridiculous at all! As a teacher, it is much better for EVERYONE to do communal supplies. Whether a child has "his" Ticonderoga #2 pencil or "someone else's" makes no difference! It leads to no fighting over supplies and no one hoards anything. It's great for sharing.
These supplies are used throughout the year. So you may think buying 3 dozen pencils is ridiculous, but if you spread that over 10 months, you're talking about less than 1 pencil per week.
The teachers aren't taking these supplies home to their kids. THey're pooling them and taking them out as needed.
I totally agree.

There is no way you are saving money with these boxes. Maybe compared to the full retail price of those items. The entire point of selling them is for a PROFIT by the PTA. It's a fundraiser. I have no issue with fundraisers, but I hate for people to think they are getting a "deal" on something when they are not.
That's entirely my issue with this!! Obviously, nothing sold by PTA is a "bargain", it's all for profit and therefore the price is inflated. However, when the price is TRIPLE of what it would have been at a regular store, it stops being a fundraiser and turns into a plain old RIP OFF.

BUT in general whenever anyone posts on these boards you become very defensive for teachers and the school system. Reality is, 80 bucks is $$$$. Sorry if you dont see it. I cant imagine that any parent thinks 80 bucks is cheap which is the point of the thread. I actually dont remember anything like this growing up. We got our supplies and all was well.

Actually, it is not what I want but what the student need to be successful. I never said $80 wasn't a lot of money. I actually think that us excessive. So I really don't understand what you're saying. What I am saying is that sharing supplies makes sense for everyone. That was my only comment. And that multiple items are used throughout the year.
And you bet I will defend my fellow teachers if I feel they are justified. But I certainly don't defend everyone. I think many parents don't understand school rules and procedures so I try to help them understand.
And for the record, my class list is about $30, and probably much cheaper than that with sales.

Not a big deal.

Do you attend PTA meetings and read the budget? It will clearly state how much profit they make on these type of things.

I can't comment on her past posts (probably b/c I wear both shoes - parent and teacher and I may not notice), but I really took her original post in this thread of the benefit of having shared supplies...not the cost. She even said that her supplies are $30 without sales.

Erica you are correct. That's what I was agreeing with. The benefit of shared supplies. As for the cost of the pre packaged supplies, no one is forcing anyone to get them. It's there as a convenience. I always buy my kids' supplies because they enjoy doing it as an "end of summer" ritual. If they didn't, I'd be all about convenience, regardless of the cost.

well...i'm glad i didn't disappoint you
i am a parent first, teacher second. many parents, whether "on here" everyone feels the same way or not, do not always understand why certain things are done. i try to explain the "other side" so parents can have more information. i'm not sure why you're following what i write. you can check back to my last few responses on here where i didn't "defend" anyone, but tried to explain why certain things are done.
anyway, this thread is not about me.
to the OP--those kits are definitely convenient but sometimes the quality of the items isn't even good. i know in my classroom, i won't use the "hand wipes" things they include and the glue sticks were a cheap brand that didn't work. it's a shame that parents are spending money on those items. i don't know how the process works or who picks the brands that go in them.
and just an FYI--sometimes it's worth it to spend a little extra to get Elmer's glue, Ticonderoga pencils, Mead composition books etc instead of getting them from the dollar store. the quality is there and you don't have to replace the items in the middle of the year. luckily, cvs and staples have great sales throughout the summer so you can stock up for pennies!

I really don't care how much they make LOL. I'm pointing out it's a FOR PROFIT thing, so it's NOT a bargain. Just like the wrapping paper that is marked up 50%, etc. The Kidsstuff books they get $12.50 from and they sell for $25, so I'm sure the school packs are right on par with that.
Bottom line, buy it if you wan't, support the PTA, who cares! But don't make it sound like a deal because it's not. It's for convenience...for people that don't want to step foot in a store. I happen to like shopping, and like stocking up on school supplies

This I agree with...many of the other brands of pencils have awful erasers!
And....these things are like .50 a pack, Mead compositions are .25, Crayola .15-.20, Elmer's glue .15, Elmers Sticks .20, etc.

I agree! PrincessP I think you are not seeing that she was pointing out why teachers share the supplies, not that $70 for the supplies was inexpensive.
And as a fellow teacher I agree with Browneyedgirl that i like to share certain supplies so that no student goes without because the reality is that certain students do not replenish their supplies and can't afford to, this allows all my students to have the supplies they need when they need them. It also teaches a sense of community.
As for the supplies being $70, that is outrageous and I would buy them on my own since I know the deals in August are much better!

How much is your school asking for those custom made, ready and waiting for you in September, school supplies bags? My son's school has the AUDACITY to offer the aforementioned supply bag for $70!! I can get all of it in WalMart for less than half that price! Are they kidding?
Does this price include a back pack too?
Mine was never that high and I love doing it as I barely have to shop for anything.
I just got an email with the exact list of what's included in this $70 kit. NO back pack, as you can see. Although for that price they should definitely have included at least one!

Ours gave us a list last night of what we should buy and put in DS' backpack. They didn't offer a pack for us to buy. I think I like that better though. I love the Dollar Tree.

Ok, so that is 46 items and they seem to be name brand ones. I still think $70 is a lot though.

I just did a rough estimate based on my school supply shopping trips in the past, and that stuff amounts to about $30 or less shopping at Walmart or Target. The baby wipes sound like a dollar store brand, as do the zip baggies. Wonder what the bonus item is? Not worth another $40 though I'm sure!

IME it as coupons or name labels-- I think that IS expensive though. I have never spent that much on those boxes.
