how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
and a 1 year old?
DD#2 is due mid January. Fh wants to fly to Colorado to see his grandmother as soon as possible with both girls. His grandmother hasnt yet met our first daughter, and he wants her to meet her great grandchildren before she passes. There is no indication that her health is in immediate danger, but she has had heart trouble for pretty much her whole life. It acts up every now and then, and she says she doesn't know how much longer she's going to be around. When would you fly comfortably? I do not want to take any chances whatsoever by exposing the newborn to germs. His grandmother is in colorado, so it's not a short flight or some place we could drive to. Originally, we were going to spend this past thanksgiving there so she could meet DD1. But then we found out I was pregnant and it was going to be too late in my pregnancy to fly, plus, we wanted her to meet both babies and didnt want to make a second trip. We thought next summer perhaps, but she said a few days ago that she didn't know if she would still be alive by then. I dont know if it's a guilt trip or what...In any event, wwyd?

My BIL flew my nephew to Florida at 1 month. I don't know if there is a rule for this.

I told FH that we could go when we get ped's clearance. We haven't asked yet, but based on what he said about things with DD1, I would guess he would say 6-8 weeks. But, would you be comfortable with that? I still wouldn't be. They are still so fragile that taking them to a place notorious for spreading germs (airports and airplanes, for a pretty long flight) would make me nervous. SO I guess my question is what are you personally comfortable with, assuming you have the ped's OK. (I certainly would not go without the ped's ok)

Oh... hmm, it's hard for me to say because I'm not a mom yet - KWIM?
We'll be flying with our little boy when he's 6 or 7 months old and have no problem with that.
I'd probably fly at 3 months?

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
Honestly it being flu season, I would not be comfortable at all.
DD was born in the beginning of February and I was not comfortable taking her out until after her first set of vaccinations. But even then, I myself would not bring her on a plane.

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
I took my son internationally when he was almost 4 months, I would travel at 10-12 weeks internationally again to see my family. Its a personal choice.

It's a personal choice and I would check with my pediatrician but I don't think I would feel comfortable traveling on a place until the first round of shots.

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
i know the nicu dr said we should wait 3 months. when we got to the pediatrician he said 2 month. I THINK that alot of the logic also is in that they get the first big round of shots at 2 months(if you dont delay them that is)... so it helps....
being that its cold/flu/swine flu season I'd wait longer. dr was born april 22 - within a week the swine flu outbreak occurred.....airport waiting area's, circulated airplane air wouldnt make me feel comfortable......but thats me. you have to weigh both sides of it.
iid nvest in a camcorder- send video's. baby's health is #1 priority or make the longer drive in the car.
ds was born 3 1/2 weeks early, jaundice, partial lung collapse, pneumonia, 10 days of antibiotics in the hospital before i could bring him home. Seeing him with an arm splint for the iv. Then changed to a iv in the side of his head taped on, then changed to the front of his head, running to the hospital to give him feedings, having to hand him back to the nurses and feel like they were his mommy- totally changed my view from the -oh he wont get sick

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
I would personally say about 3 months. I am due in late February and we go to Florida every June. That's still up in the air just because we don't know what kind of baby he'll be (which would really be my deciding factor.) If we postponed the trip, we would probably go in late August/early September and the baby would be about 6 months. But again, I think if we decide not to go in June it will be because DS is a difficult baby, not because I'm too worried about germs. But that's just me. I thikn you'll have a much easier time traveling with your infant then your 1 year old to be honest.

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
We traveled out of the country with DS1 at 3 months. That is the earliest I would travel on a plane with a baby. Also, if you are nursing, your immunity will be passed along...

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
I am dying to plan a trip for April Break (DH and I are both teachers) with the baby..... I guess I need to wait until she's here and talk to the Dr. before makin any plans, but if I get the Dr's approval, I think 3 months is OK.

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
We didn't have a choice, my FIL passed away in NYC so we flew from FL to NY when DS was 6 weeks old. I called the Dr and he said it was fine since he'd had all of his vaccinations needed so far. If we had a choice we probably would not have traveled when DS was so young, but we had no problems and DS did not get sick.

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
If it weren't flu season, I think I'd be fine with say 3 months. By then the baby would probably have the first set of shots.
However, being that March is still flu season, I would wait at least until May or June. Just my personal feeling.

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
I took my son out to many places before his vaccines (he was even baptized and passed around at his party before the vaccines), but i wouldn't be comfortable taking him on an airplane until at least his 2nd set of vaccines (at 4 mos).
We drove to VA with him when he was 3 weeks old - that was the BEST age. All he did was sleep for 4 hours, woke up once to eat, then slept the rest of the trip

Re: how soon would you travel by plane with a newborn
I really want to go to Turkey in September and baby will be almost 3 months. My parents think I'm crazy but I don't see any harm in it. I'll also be breastfeeding so baby will be getting immunity that way as well.
I personally feel it would be easier to take a newborn that a 2 year old that is running around so I would like to do it sooner rather than later.

ITA. I also wouldn't rely on the immunity from BFing. It can help, but it doesn't mean DC is totally protected. DS is EBF and has been sick plenty of times.
