Taking a newborn on a plane?

Would you take a 6 week old newborn on a plane to florida? If not, please tell me why.

Reason: It's my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary and my grandma's 80th birthday. my grandpa is in early stages of alzheimers and im afraid if i dont take the baby to florida with me they'll never get a chance to meet. I'm only 15 weeks now and we would be going thanksgiving weekend. but we need to book flights soon and my mom needs a definite answer from me.

TIA

I took DS on a plane at 6 weeks with Dr's permission. It was only a 1 hr flight though.

I would ask your Ped.Chat Icon

I would drive.

So many contained germs on an airplane.

I probably would. We plan on going to California in September, DD will be 3 months, and thats a 6 hour flight. So a 2 hour flight with a 6 week old would probably be fine.

Personally, I wouldn't, especially if your
DC has not had any shots yet. For me, even if my DD had her shots at that point, I still wouldn't. But that's just me.

Re: Taking a newborn on a plane?

Personally, I would not. 6 weeks is still very young, and since it's Thanksgiving weekend, the flights will all be packed. Your baby will be exposed to so many germs, I wouldn't take the risk. Even something as simple as a headcold in a baby that young can be very, very serious.

Would you consider driving?

the only reason i dont want to drive, is because i think driving is more dangerous. thats having a newborn in a car for 24 hours. there are so many more car accidents than plane incidents. that makes me nervous.

If you drive, you will have to stop every 2-3 hrs to feed.

I would def fly with ds at that age. Your baby will be so bundled up & close to you that no one will really get near him/her

I wouldnt because of air pressure. I cant imagine how bad it would hurt if DC was sensitive to it. I remember when I was younger feeling like my head was going to explode. Chat Icon

Actually, the pressure isn't too bad for a baby b/c you can give them a pacifier, a bottle or the boob to help alivate that.

My DS flew at 3 months and 8 months and he was a dream each time.

Hmm...that is a tough call. Normally I'd say no way, I'd never take a baby that young on an airplane. But those are very special things you want to do in Florida, so maybe Chat Icon

Honestly, I think for a baby that young - the biggest danger is germs, not a car accident. IMO, I think exposing her to that many germs is much more dangerous than the small chance of getting into a car accident.

The fact that it is Thanksgiving weekend is what makes me the most nervous - the airport will be packed, your flight will be packed. If it was a less busy time, I would be more okay with it.

I would, imo your baby can be exposed to germs anywhere you go, in a store, at someones house. Its only a quick 2 hour or so flight. I would do it.

I have to agree with Karen on this one...I just flew home on the day after Easter with strep...I feel bad, I exposed a packed plane, but I didn't know it was strep until I came home and my son had a strep infection on his skin - impetigo - which is extremely contagious...we just thought it was a pimple.

Re: Taking a newborn on a plane?

My doctor told me I couldnt take DS on the plane until after he got his 3 month shots. He told us we had to wait 3 weeks after his shots so that they were all absorbed into his body

That was my doctor though - I think all docs give different opinions on planes
