How to get a loved one to Stop Smoking?
A loved one of mine has been smoking for countless decades - he now smokes every chance he gets.
Obviously he and I know the side effects of what he is doing to his body - and the addiction has taken over him that no matter what anyone has said, it hasn't made him stop.
I feel like if I don't do or say something I will never forgive myself if god forbid something happens to him because of this habit. What can I do? We've spoken about it numerous times - but it hasn't been enough to make him change. I haven't done it yet - but I know I could obtain information by calling 311. Has anyone had any sucess in making a loved one stop smoking? How did you do it?
I feel Like i did to pursue this more and give it another chance because Im terrified of the outcome of what may happen............
TIA

I started at a very young age trying to get my dad to stop. He only stopped when he was ready to, which was after he got tired of getting sick a lot. He smoked about 3 packs a day for a very long time. He quit 20 years ago and he's alive & well. Now he has one severe medical issue that is not related to smoking.

This is a tough one. Many people stop after a scare. My dad coughed up blood. That was it. He smoked unfiltered Pall Malls for 40 years!
My mom unfortunately had a heart attack and then a belly bleed as the result of the meds. She smoked for 50 years.
I also told her that any future kids I had she would never get to see if she smoked. I think that did it more than the heart attack. She is smoke free about 8 years.
I hope it doesn't come to extremes with this person though. This is a very tough habit to break. I wish you and this person luck in getting there.

sometimes its harder to watch than be the actual smoker. if the person knows what the effects are, and they are an adult, unfortunately there is nothing you can do. it is up to them. you can give literature and information on quitting and COPD.
my dad smoked unfiltered camels for countless years and now has COPD at 65. he uses oxygen at night and has a horrible wet cough bringing up all kinds of nasty junk. mom and i begged him for years to stop to no avail; he only stopped when he woke up one night and couldnt breathe. then he was diagnosed.
it sounds like you are afraid of feeling guilty down the line if the person gets sick....fear not. you have nothing to feel guilty about. it's not your responsibility. this person isnt a child.
