What happened to just ignoring e-mails you don't care for? I get all kinds of stuff but I only read what I chose to!

I think ignoring it sends the message that it's ok. This definitely isn't ok with me.

Or just respond with "Deleted"

This could be a better approach...

Dear Soccer Mom,

I'm going to assume that you didn't fully read this email and all of the pictures in it before sending it. I understand people feel strongly about the election, but it doesn't seem like you to send out a racist email. I just cannot tolerate racism in any form.

Thanks,
Me

Agree with this language. I'd only add that to that a request that she not send you such offensive stuff in the future.

Re: How would you respond to this? (racism/election related)

Wow that is extremely offensive. It is disturbing how blatant people can be with racism, especially when they feel their friends may be in agreement with them.

However, just to play the devils advocate, hopefully she didn't fully read the emal or fowarded it hastily. My dad has sent me quite a few offensive emails like dirty jokes that i feel are only appropriate for him to forward to my mother, etc that he did not read or even understand Chat Icon. I complain, he is embarrassed, yet the emails sometimes slip through.

Either way you need to say something to her.

I would probably respond like this.

I know you sent this email as a joke but it is not the type of humor I enjoy. In the future please refrain from sending me emails such as this. I do not feel it is OK to condone the types of stereotypes mentioned.

Ok I responded this way:

While I'm sure you mean no harm, many of the polical email forwards are racially charged and I find them offensive. I respect that you feel strongly about the election, but I would appreciate it if you didn't forward me emails like this. I do not tolerate racism in any form.

Thanks for giving me the words to say. I'm calling my 7 year old now to tell him to beat the crap out of her son (kidding, kidding).

I think this is a well-crafted response. As a new mom, I am curious, will you talk about this with your son? (not necessarily talking about the individual, but the ideas)

I ignore emails from my Aunts/Uncles my DH's family about this crap - Emails from friends that are 'off color' or whatever. -

Sending an email like that to another mother that you only know through your child is COMPLETELY inappropriate.

What this woman finds funny is her own business, but you do NOT forward things like that out to your address book - She needs to use some discretion.

I would open up a dialogue but responding "did you mean to send this to me?"???? and go from there.

I am just Chat Icon at this.

That's actually what I always do when I receive something that doesn't sit well with me! I have no interest of getting into discussions or preaching to the sender as to why she/he shouldn't be sending something to me in the future...

I guess I am just not very socially or politically charged!Chat Icon

I just wanted to add that I completely agree with the above quote! Which is why I would just leave this alone, if I was the recipient. If I don't know this woman well at all I would just ignore and move on!

If it was someone close to me I might have said something...

We've already talked about judging people by their character versus the color of their skin.

I haven't spoken to him about racism, in general & how wrong it is. However given this election, I think it's an ideal time. I don't think this woman is teaching her son to be a Klan member, but I think seemingly innocent discussions between parents filter down to a child.

If anything, the email is a huge eye opener to me in terms of my own community.

Unless you are friends with her or get a lot of email from her, I would probably just ignore it. If this is her mindset, I doubt you can say anything to change it.

If you want to say something, I would just tell her you don't care for political or joke emails, so could she please take you off the list. Again, I really don't think there is much you will change if you confront her directly about the content.

That's pretty horrible--really racist.

Re: How would you respond to this? (racism/election related)

I saw this weeks ago.
Are you sure she sent it to be a racist or just to share her findings with you?
Just as the media did when they went public with it.
Unless she has expressed racial slurs before, I wouldnt judge so quickly that she meant any harm or is being racist.
good luck.

Same here. I do not support Obama b/c of the ISSUES. I would not care if he had purple skin with pink polka dots.

I would say something, letting it go would kinda be like condoning that behavior, KWIM?

Dear Soccer Mom,

Please stop sending me political emails. While I'm sure you mean no harm, many of them are racially charged and I find them offensive. I do not tolerate racism in my household or anywhere else. I respect that you feel strongly about the election, but I would appreciate it if you didn't forward me emails like this.

Thanks,
Me

Yeah 'd have to agree here. I am a frim believer that when it comes to stuff like this doing nothing is enabling the behaviour & I am sure you do not want it around you or your kids.

She responded:

"I am sorry I offended you."

I was hoping for a "I never scrolled down" or a "I was temporarily blind & hit forward by accident."

Oh...
I think your response and her answer were perfect. It didnt present or end with drama. Its neutral. You arent going to teach her right from wrong overnight. I think the dialogue was EXACTLY how it should be AND...in the end...you still have your friendship.

I don't think I could be friends with her. It's a shame because she has been very sweet to me. I'll be polite & nice to her but that's about where it's going to end.

I can't believe you got that email!

The woman that created it said this...

"I didn't see it the way that it's being taken. I never connected," she said. "It was just food to me. It didn't mean anything else."

to quote Amy Poehler..."really?" come on

I think I would have responded the same way you did. I actually received a similar email at work and had to speak to one of my direct reports about why it was inappropriate to send around the company.
