Huntington School District?
I was under the impression that Huntington and South Huntington SDs all funnel into the same high school, which, no, isn't rated terribly high compared to surrounding districts such as Harborfields and Cold Spring Harbor.

No huntington HS is BAD.
Walt Whitman HS which is S Huntington is much better. Even though the Great Schools website doesn't really show it.

It's diverse which for some reason scares people.

No I didn't but played against them in sports. We had incidents everytime. I am not against diverse, I actually wish the school I went to was more diverse. I am against he violence we had when we went there. And it hasn't gotten better over the years.

It used to be as you said but now it's the opposite.
I grew up in Huntington and I know a good number of people that still live in the district. Most of them send their kids to private school.

I'm going to say it again.....people are not against diversity, I don't know why that card IS ALWAYS played. The fact is, certain parts of Huntington have a MUCH higher crime rate, gang problem and dropout rate than surrounding school districts. It just does. It's fact. People sometimes steer away from these communities, not bc they fear diversity but in favor of areas with lower crime and gang problems and better schools. The FACT is, surrounding schools academically perform better. That's not being scared of/or not wanting diversity, it's wanting to be a safer area with better schools.
ETA: my sister lives in Huntington (Bay) and is planning on sending her children to private school once they reach HS age.

I honestly couldn't care less about diversity; it doesn't scare me by a LONG shot and frankly it reallly annoys me when people throw that out there because you're basically calling everyone RACIST which is pretty jacked up if you ask me.
I was talking statistics; I compared Huntington to Harborfields. They're neighboring districts with I believe relatively similar socioeconomic diversity.
Based on the NYSED.GOV site...
Huntington #of dropouts 2011-2012 school year (which is the most current report): 20
Harborfields: 1
# of children attending 4 year colleges for Huntington: 143 out of 248 = 58%
Harborfields: 236 out of 282 = 84%
# of children attending 2 year colleges for Huntington: 84 out of 248 = 34%
Harborfields: 40 out of 282 = 14%
% of students receiving a Regents dipolma with advanced designation for Huntington: 48%
Harborfields: 77%
Of course every school is what you make of it but if I had to choose between schools, I'm going with the one that has better statistics.

There's a reason for that...
Unfortunately, not all of Huntington is nice, like in Huntington Bay, Halesite, Fort Hill, or event the village. There are parts of Huntington Station that are BAD. Lots of gang activity. Latin Kings are big over there.
And yes, it's VERY popular for kids growing up in Huntington to go to private school.

I agree with this. People always say it's diversity that scares people. In this case, it's crime and violence.

I would worry as much during elementary since it's based largely on your neighborhood. So your elementary might be fine. The area over around the train station has always been bad but has gotten worse over the years. Lots of violence and gangs. So the schools that pull from this area will have behavior issues.

Re: Huntington School District?
I am very happy with the South Huntington school district. It has greatly improved over the past few years. Every school has gangs, drugs, violence, etc. but Huntington does seem to have a higher than average amount right now.

I'm not calling ANYONE a racist...diversity is about more than just race and Huntington is diverse in many other ways which can account for differences in college attendance and test scores.

Re: Huntington School District?
I grew up in Huntington and wanted to go to the highschool but was not allowed but frineds in honors did really well
we are getting ready to send our son to public school if we have full day
there is a stem magnet school that opened this year for 3rd-6h
there is a bilingual program in elementary schools
there are more ap classes offered at Huntington over harborfields
on paper Huntington is not as good as harborfields but I know people pulled out of harborfields because they are not good with really bright kids or kids who need extra help
most of the hate comes from people outside of huntington

Re: Huntington School District?
I would not send my children to Huntington SD. While there several years ago as an intern, a student was slashed with a knife in the building. I'm all for diversity, but that level of violence is not acceptable to me. S Huntington is ok. I think there are there are several other great districts in the area: Harborfields, CSH, Elwood, Northport, HHH.
