I am so relieved... BFing and "Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex"

I am crying right now (and I am not a crier at ALL). I swear I've never heard of this until just now. It was posted as a link on FB by Kellymom.com.

I never knew this existed. I thought I was the only one. I thought there was something wrong with me. I didn't know other women had this.

I had this with DS, and now again with DD. I am so, so relieved right now to know that I'm not alone.

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm happy that you found some info & that you're not alone Chat Icon

I'm going to look it up in a bit, but if you don't mind sharing, that would be great Chat Icon

I just looked it up.... I had no idea you were going through that!

But I'm glad you have some support! When I googled it, a bunch of websites came up... so there's definitely others out there going through the same thing.

I had that... for a while. I never new it had a name or was something real!!! WOW what an eye opener... I thought there was something wrong with me. I actually would get anxiety attacks...

I struggled sooo hard to breast feed and finally when I got her on I HATED it...

I still get it every once in a while but not as bad anymore...

Not at all Chat Icon

Basically, for a few moments (maybe 30 seconds to a minute) before I feel my let-down as I am nursing, I feel a kind of "wave" of mild depression - it feels a lot like homesickness. It goes away as my milk comes down and the baby nurses. I felt it the entire 5 months I nursed DS, and I felt it periodically while I was pregnant with DD. I still feel it occasionally when DD nurses now, but it's not every time like it was with DS.

It seems that people with D-MER all experience a negative emotion, but the kind of emotion depends on the individual. Some have anger, some have sadness, some have nausea.

I never really told anyone about it - I mentioned it once on here but no one knew what I was talking about so i let it go, figuring I was the only one.

Maria, I never knew you experienced the same thing (though with seemingly different symptoms). It stinks to go through but it's really such a relief to me to know I'm not alone!

Yeah I never mentioned it to anyone I thought It happened since it took us such a long time to BF that it was underlying stress or anxiety but I'd get nausea, a pit on my stomach adn anxiety...

I still get it everyonce in a while....

Its nice to know its normal... but is there anythign you can do for it???

I wish I could be one of those women who felt JOY nursing... I just don't...

I am the same way. I do it because I know it's best, but I don't love it at ALL, and I wish I did. I can't wait until DD is six months old, that's when I plan on stopping.

It looks like there might be some treatments, but I haven't looked into it much yet.
