I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
Don't really know what to write... I'm not a big poster but I feel so sad I don't want to cry to my friends over this... I guess I'm embarrased.
So, my husband and I are both 100% Italian (just giving background here), we are both very healthy people. Our families and generally very healthy as well. We are both athletic... my husband coaches 4 different teams and was an All American Athlete in many sports (I guess I'm trying to make myself feel better here...)
Anyway, I'm 11 weeks today and I got tested a few weeks back and found out I was a carrier. I was upset and had not idea what cystic fibrosis even was. So, my husband had to get tested. We got a call yesterday and they said he in fact is a carrier as well. Although, they said the mutations were different but there is a very strong chance our child is a carrier and a 25% chance it will have the disease.
We are seeing a specialist from UPenn next Tuesday.
I guess I don't really know why I'm writing this. If anyone has any information please share it with me. I've beeing doing searches on webMD.
Sorry to be such a downer. We are so happy we are going to have a baby but I feel so sad these past couple days.
Thanks, Aimee

Hopefully you will be able to get some more guidance and information from the specialist, to help you weed through what you're feeling & experiencing.

I really dont post much either but I do have some info for you. My best friend has a healthy 4 year old daughter and the exact story as yours is what happen to her. SHe had no idea that she or her husband was a carrier and the test came back positive for both and she was so nervous. She did go for the amnio at about 16 or 17 weeks and they were able to tell her the baby was only a carrier and did not have the disease. Best of luck to you and I pray that you baby wil be fine.

Re: I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
I just wanted to say, I have a close, close friend who is in a similar situation - she tested positive for Catavans - a RARE jewish genetic disorder. They tested her husband and he came back positive as well. Try to remember though that statistics ARE on your side. The chance your child will have the disease is 1/4. My friend continued with her pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby boy. One year later she was pregnant again, and she just delivered a healthy baby girl last month.
Stay strong

Oh sweetie!!! You must be worried to tears!
I'll send you a FM-
Just want to let you know though, that IF your child is born with CF, there is so much advancement with modern medicine that your baby has a very high chance of living a long life. Every person I've met, which is a lot now, with CF, even plays sports, even football.

Anytime I need to know something medical I google the name of whatever it is I am looking for and the Mayo clinic. I usually get the most research papers & such that way.

Re: I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
I would just like to say thank you to everyone. I'm still trying not to think the worst. I'm anxious to hear what the specialist has to say. You've all been generous. I will let you know what the doctor says next week. Thanks again, Aimee
