Re: I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
I read a little bit about this. I believe that an amnio can give you some answers. Also, look into CVS testing. Some women on here have had it. It's done eariler than an amnio, and I believe it can terst for all the same things.

Re: I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
i am sorry this is happening. please do not apologize for being a "downer" or for feeling sad. this is scary and no one wants to think that something could be wrong with their baby-you absolutely have the right to feel worried, sad, angry or anything else that comes up-having those feelings doesn't mean you are not joyful or grateful that you are pregnant. it means you are facing a really scary and challenging time.
i know how frightening it is to worry about this. my husband and i are both carriers of a different trait, for a serious blood disorder. we went for a cvs at 12 weeks and found that one baby carries one trait and the other baby is trait free. please feel free to fm me any questions you have about cvs and genetic testing.
i will be keeping you in my prayers.

Re: I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
Hi Aimee! Just wanted to let you know my sister when through the same thing with her DD. There has been No CF in either side of the family that anyone is aware of. It was an extremely stressful time for everyone-obviously more so for them. They found out that they both had the same mutation with very bad implications for the baby. However, after the amnio, we found that she was having a beautiful baby girl that was NOT even a carrier. I will keep you in my prayers and pray for the same results. FM me if you have any questions.

Posted by Phoebee Just want to let you know though, that IF your child is born with CF, there is so much advancement with modern medicine that your baby has a very high chance of living a long life.
I had a friend in college who had CF who was on his HS and college swim teams and was pretty healthy most of the time. Try to stay positive

Re: I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
I am so sorry to hear this...but it doesn't necessarily mean your child will have it. I am going to tell you about what I know....
My ex-boyfriend had CF himself. He had an older sister who didn't have it and his younger brother had it. His parents were both carriers and years ago were warned about this when they used to take blood tests before marriages (both 100% italian as well). They were warned but had children anyway. When their daughter was born she did not have it so they assumed all was well. Proceeded to have 2 more children and both boys had it. My ex is now 38 I believe, and lives with it . It's not an easy thing but children are now living longer providing they take better care of themselves and with the technology around today. Sadly his brother passed at 28 yrs old. He was sickly... They used to say alot of children wouldn't live long with it but I think things have changed now. People are able to have functional lives. 2 x Daily he had to take breathing meds thru a nebulizer and he also wore a vest daily that shakes you to loosen the mucus in your lungs. Basically yuor body over produces mucus which also effects digestion etc. In men, alot become sterile because mucus clogs the glands... he was. He also had to take digestive enzymes daily because his body was not able to break down food properly. He was always very thin from this and never really gained weight. On top of this he was diabetic... which is also something that can develop from it. For the record, I left him becuase he was crazy... not because of his illnesses. I saw an episode on the View recently with a child from the CF foundation and she looked great. They are working for a cure.. and coming up woth better meds as well. Like I said ... you don't have to pass it on... but i guess you have to make decisions on future children. I know it's hard and its frightening. I wish you all the best.......... lots of for you and dh.. please keep us updated. keep your chin up.......

I am so sorry to hear this. I was told that we both had to have the same EXACT mutation in order for their to be a chance of CF. This is what my doc told me (I switched from her office though, for other reasons) but I would look into this just in case. Good luck. I will keep you all in my prayers

Re: I can't believe this is happening - cystic fibrosis
I just found this. Maybe it will help.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder. All genes come in pairs, so everyone has two copies of each gene. One copy comes from your mother and the other from your father. Some genes do not function properly because there is a mistake in them. If a gene has a mistake, it is said to be altered or changed. For some diseases—like CF—both genes of the pair have to be altered for a person to have the disease.
If a person has one changed copy of a CF gene, that person is a carrier for CF. A carrier does not have CF. There are no known health problems associated with being a carrier.
