I don't know if I can keep up this pace all year
I've been back to school with kids for 4 days.
I am EXHAUSTED.
We do not have duty free lunch--we eat with our kids. We also take them out for recess.
I'm over all of that...it's been that way since I moved to NC and I'm totally used to it.
But my new principal forces us to meet with our grade level during EVERY prep of the week. We get a 40-minute "break" every day, that's the ONLY break we get, and she forces us to meet every day in the planning room.
I'm so freakin' tired. I'm not gonna be able to do this all year, but I have no idea what my options are here

Re: I don't know if I can keep up this pace all year
I wish I had some great advice for you, but I'm just not sure what to say! Would it be possible for you to start applying to jobs elsewhere just in case sticking it out becomes unbearable? This woman truly does sound like a nightmare!
How are the other teachers handling it? How long has she been a principal there for? Does the staff generally have a good turnover rate? Maybe wait and see how it goes ..... She seems so overbearing so gar, but maybe she will be LESS on your case in other areas. Like maybe she won't be the type to constantly come in for surprise observations, etc...... and put unnecessary comments in your file I just have to believe this woman has to be good in SOME way!
Is she young/old? I just can't understand how a person can decide to run a school like this....... Do you know how other schools in NC are run?
I'm really sorry about this!!
I know you said you are exhausted, but what are some positive things about your week? How are your students?

Re: I don't know if I can keep up this pace all year
Is this something new she came up with this year? I would talk to your other grade level teachers. I guess she can force you guys to "meet", but what you actually do/don't do together is up to you guys. Maybe you can grade/plan while you "talk"? Or do you think she will be dropping in to see how the meetings are going?

Re: I don't know if I can keep up this pace all year
That is just plain awful. I know it's against our contract to force teachers to do something specific on our preps (rarely, things are "suggested", but technically, we really don't have to). Do you have a contract?
So sorry you have to deal with such BS.

Very good question.
We don't have a contract. I mean, we do SIGN a contract that we agree to the terms of employment for the school year, but there are no stipulations or anything in there.
It's the 1st Monday of the new school year tomorrow, and I am in absolute hell tonight

Re: I don't know if I can keep up this pace all year
Not to downplay how you feel, as I am a teacher and know how exhausting it can be, you should be thankful you have a job in this economy. Many of my teacher friends lost their jobs this year and even more will be layed off next year because of lower enrollments and budgets not passing. I just always try to look on the bright side.

Re: I don't know if I can keep up this pace all year
I hope that every post like this does not turn into "be glad you have a job." Those of us in NY are fortunate that we don't have to work under conditions like the OP. Even though I don't always think much of the UFT, the situation she describes would not fly for long in most schools. And I know she also has a young child- even having preps and lunch to do work were not enough for me and my first year as a mom was really rough. I can't imagine having to give up so much of the day to a power-trippy principal (I saw your other posts about her.)
We are all in for challenges because of budget cuts- bigger classes, less resources. Those of us with jobs are grateful for them. But I hope this forum remains a place where we can vent and get support from people who know what we're going through without being accused of being ungrateful.

My point, which I thought I made clear, was that there is always a bright side and something positive to look at in a situation and sometimes we should focus on those to help us get through the tougher moments.

Thank you for this. I saw the OP, but I honestly didn't know what to say to it, so I didn't say anything. I am certainly not ungrateful for my job...but I'm telling you, Starbucks is looking better and better every single day.

ITA! You just need to vent sometimes. I feel your pain, I worked at a private school last year(no union) & the workload and time commitment outside of school was out of control. I quit and am working as a permanent sub this year. Good luck to you and feel free to vent anytime.

Is that really necessary? We all use this board to vent sometimes because we hope other teachers will understand.

I think if any one of us ever had to deal with losing prep time and lunch time we would certainly vent and complain. I love teaching and am incredibly grateful to have the job, but I know I would complain about that.
Hang in there, MrsRivera

I agree with Sam, 100%.
MrsRivera, I hope your days are getting easier. I certainly don't think that all you do is complain (and I'm sure there's plenty you must be thankful for.) I hope this thread doesn't make you feel any worse with the long days you've been having. I hope things are getting better.

So then why even bothering reading it?
Simple solution to this issue, yes?
And I hardly think it's a fair response for someone who puts others down in many of her posts. YOU very rarely have much that's positive to say. But you don't see me attacking you for any of your blunt, rude posts, do you?
So how about you refrain from posting on my threads (since you obviously don't have any advice or encouragement to contribute anyway), and I'll stay as far away from you as a can, which is what I typically do anyway.
