i feel absolutely horrible right now....
i was clipping kaylies nails and i cut her finger! she was crying and she started bleeding....its a good slit at the top of her finger....shes three mos old i put a dab of neosporin on it....is that bad? and i put a small bandaid....i feel like a horrible mommy...tell me you've done this before?....i feel like from now on im not going to use the clippers im going to file them instead....would that be better? tia

I think EVERYONE has done this at some point.
And they bleed like nobody's business.
But they are fine.
I could never use the file because his nails would just bend.
You'll get better with the clippers.

I think DC who DON'T get their fingers nipped become traumatized for life. I would venture to say that 95% or more of DC have gotten nipped at one point or another while getting their nails clipped....

I've done it twice!! The first time she didn't even flinch (she was sleeping) but the second time I almost fainted from the blood. And to make matters worse, she would stick out her bandaged thumb in the saddest, most pathetic, abused child sort of way until I took the band-aid off.

 i put a mitten on that hand so she wouldnt put the bandaid in her mouth but i can see her doing that too

Ah Jen, you are not a bad mom. Those nails are so, so tiny and bend so easiy and are so darn sharp. She will be OK. We try to clip them when Athan is eating - that keeps him occupied and focused on the bottle and less likely to fidget. I will feed an Chris will clip. It's a tag team operation.

DH did it to DD when she was that age. we felt terrible! we put some cream on it and it healed fine! No worries!

thats a good idea maria maybe thats when ill do it....mike can feed and ill clip...maybe after this he could try the clipping though i think im traumatized lol

Yeah give it a try with Mike - it is so much easier when there is someone there with you to serve as a distraction to the baby. and  for mentioning Athan's avatar!!!!

That has happened so many times with DS! As good as we got with the clippers, he pulls his hands away and ends up with a cut that usually bleeds alot We feel terrible but you would think that at 2 years old he would realize that he should stay still so he wont get a "boo boo".

i just read this morning about a baby that sucked hte bandaid off his finger and choked on it. he was fine but it was a warning in an old issue of paretns that i read.
maybe try to watch extra closly to make sure the bandaid stays on while it needs to and then remove it.
you arent a bad mommy!

Happens to all of us...well except those like my DH who have never once cut a child's nails because he's afraid of doing it.
Filing isn't much better. I was filing Maddie's nails when she was a baby & skimmed her skin with the file. She bleed like a sieve. After that it was only nail clippers.

I cut Johns little finger when he was 4 weeks old, from then on DH cut them. Now DH cut Joeys nails 2 weeks ago and cut his little finger, it happens, it hurts us more than them

done it... and i think i cried more than gianna did. i use a file now only. i bought one at sallys that is super fine. i do it while shes sleeping and she doesnt even notice. dont worry! we've all done it or will at one point

I cut my son's thumb a few weeks ago. I felt awful. It is the same thumb that he likes to suck so I felt even worse.
