I feel like my world is caving in....
So we came back from the neurologist (who I didnt really care for) for Christopher and I just cant stop crying.....she was not too happy what she saw, needless to say she did catch him on the worst day..NO nap, no lunch and still sick, but Im NOT trying to make any excuses. She does think there are some dlays and should receive services. She is NOT sure but thinks he may have PDD. She wants to give hom that diagnosis so he WILL get services, but didnt really give him any tests, juts a 15 minute consult with him. She feels he needs speech, special ed., and OT servises. I called the EI coordinator to re-open his file because he was evulated at 9 months for PT issues., and a psychologist came to evulated him and he didnt qulaify. When I called to talk to her she was GREAT and said how can she make that diagnosis without any testing. I dont know what to do....Im so upset now...I cant stop crying. Do I have him evualted by the same place?? and people? She thought maybe it would be a good idea to have him evualted by the same psychologist because he already has seen him in the past. But everyone on here recommended Marion and Solomon. Im sorry this is so long...I just dont knwo what to do anymore...like I need this added stress

I'm sorry you are going through this. I don't know what PDD is, but I would think any diagnosis would need a thorough evaluation first and I would make sure to get that before moving forward. If your child needs assistance, you want the right help.

I would follow your gut instinct. Do you feel comfortable sending him back to the same psycologist? if so, then do what you feel is best. It's your child.

Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
I am so sorry you are going through this. I think if your gut tells you that you were not comfortable with this last place go elsewhere. I too believe to make a true evaluation and conclusion you would need certain tests or clear cut symptoms and if this last place wants to jump at a conclusion and you are not comfortable go for another opinion elsewhere and see how they manage the situation. Best of luck I hope you find the answers you are looking for.

First things first.....try to calm down
You said you don't really care for that neurologist. I haven't been through this, but I suggest seeing someone else. See what then say. Then, if you get the same diagnosis, go from there. If you think she is misdiagnosing him, then you are entitled to another opinion.

Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
PDD is Pervasive Developmental Disorder
It is a spectrum of disorders ranging from mild to severe.
I don't know anything about your child but I think that I would try to stay positive until he is evaluated
Edited to ask: How old is your child?

Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
I would have him evaluated by someone else - maybe the psychologist (chiatrist?) that met him before.
My sister is in Special Ed and tells me that once a child is "labeled" it is almost impossible to get away from that. There are so many tests to determine all types of special needs, I can't believe he wasn't property evaluated!

Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
It sounds to me that she gave you that diagnosis to help you get services. If you do a google search for the DSM IV, it will give you the criteria that neurologists use when making autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. look at it yourself and see if you feel your child fits the characteristices. You could also get a second opinion.
I have seen children diagnosed PDD very young and then so much progress is made in the EI system that the classification changes and the child either never had PDD or progressed to the point that he no longer has it.

ITA- 15 minutes is WAY too short a time period to make a difinitive diagnosis about something as serious as PPD. Plus he is still under 2 right? Or close to it? Its a little young to be definate about something like this.
Please wait until there more information before you let yourself get too upset.

Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
Diane,
You know a lot about this too. Trust your heart and head. If you don't feel the diagnosis is correct or are nervous to have him just labeled in order to receive services, then see a different neurologist and have him evaluated again.
I can only imagine how difficult this is on you. Take a day or two to search your head and heart and thinks about what you want to.
