Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
Hey Diane ...
I'm going to answer your FM privately, but I'd also like to clear some things up on this post just as a general FYI for now, and for later if it gets searched.
1. PDD can actually be diagnosed in as little as 15 minutes. The test is called the CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale) and is basically a parent questionairre. You know him best and you're bringing your concerns to the table. A Psychologist makes the formal diagnosis.
2. PDD is Pervasive Developmental Disorder. It is a mild form of the Autism Spectrum. It IS NOT Autism as you think you know it. Pervasive means that the developmental disorder has reached multiple areas (speech as well as educational ability as well as fine motor or sensory, etc.) The sooner you can start Speech, Special Instruction and Occupational Therapy the better.
3. "Labeling" in Early Intervention (under the age of three) has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE REST OF YOUR CHILD"S EDUCATIONAL CAREER. All records are sealed and purged at the age of 3 if you so choose. The county is involved, not your school district. Denying your child recommended services because you are "afraid of a label" is, in my opinion, grossly negligent.
4. And most importantly, EARLY INTERVENTION WORKS. Really works. Miraculously works. My little boy who had only 10 words 6 months ago, just got tucked in and said "Wow! That was a Great story! Sweet Dreams Mommy." -- (OK, and now I'm crying!) But the point is, EI WORKS.
Diane, you are an exceptional mom. You and Christopher will get through this. It's sometimes impossibly hard, but you'll learn just as much as he will, and you'll witness this little miracle thrive. I'll get you all our contact info ASAP. Hang in there -- it really will be OK.

I know you will get through this and it will only make your family stronger.
I also have to say that I really believe in early intervention. Any extra services will only help him. I think you know that being a Special Ed teacher.

As an EI speech pathologist, its nice to hear a success story. Diane after reading your post, I would still recommend a second opinion. You need to feel comfortable with that individual and their assessment of your child, it sounds like you did not walk away satisfied. Suffolk county EI prefers the evaluation to be done by a clinical psychologist (PhD), I know a GREAT one if you FM me. He diagnosed my niece (very cautiously) and now she should be undiagnosed, although there are still delays she is not presenting with the same characteristics as when she was 2, she is almost 4 now.

Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
Lea..thanks Im look forwrad to your FM .....I dont think I slept an hour last night. I feel so guilty writing this....all I keep thinking is why is this happeneing to me? Will Christopher be ok, will he need special ed services forever, will we be able to go to Disney, will he go to college, will he get married some day. I dont even want to go to work today. But I do feel positive, I guess Im just still in shock right now to hear those words, I guess kind of like a doctor telling you that you have Cancer, or that you are going to die, but when someone tells you there is something wrong with your child, I just felt like someone punched me in the gut. Thanks again

That's exactly where you are as anyone would be. It's natural. You have 'digest' the information that you have heard and then you will work through this and Christopher will be fine. As Lea and many others have said EI works. This has been caught early and is going to make a difference.
