Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
I am brand new to this site but I am a special ed teacher so I felt compelled to respond to your post.
I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. I am not a parent so I can only imagine the emotions you are feeling right now. I wouldn't presume to know what you are feeling, I just wanted to give you some advice from an educational standpoint.
If your son does have a disability it sounds like it is mild. PDD is the mildest of all the autism spectrum disorders and if your doctor thinks your son might have it then his symptoms are probably even milder than that. If your child does have a disability, whether it's PDD or just a speech and language delay, the earlier you can get him help the better it will be for him. The last thing I wanted to say is that you have to be comfortable with your doctor. If your not maybe you could look into someone else? Good luck and feel free to FM me if you want.

It sounds to me that she gave you that diagnosis to help you get services. If you do a google search for the DSM IV, it will give you the criteria that neurologists use when making autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. look at it yourself and see if you feel your child fits the characteristices. You could also get a second opinion.
I have seen children diagnosed PDD very young and then so much progress is made in the EI system that the classification changes and the child either never had PDD or progressed to the point that he no longer has it. yes, she told us that that was the reason...I do feel he needs some speech services. Thanks ladies for all your responses.....I seriously would NOT be able to make it through without you ladies, and I sincerely mean that

Trust your heart and head. If you don't feel the diagnosis is correct or are nervous to have him just labeled in order to receive services, then see a different neurologist and have him evaluated again.
I can only imagine how difficult this is on you. Take a day or two to search your head and heart and thinks about what you want to.

ITA- 15 minutes is WAY too short a time period to make a difinitive diagnosis about something as serious as PPD. Plus he is still under 2 right? Or close to it? Its a little young to be definate about something like this.
Please wait until there more information before you let yourself get too upset.
I agree with both and can completely understand why you are upset
15 minutes is in no way long enough to evaluate anything She might have been trying to help but it's very upsetting to hear PDD. A 15 minute evaluation isn't enough to even skim the surface of such a diagnosis.
Ever since my father's stroke neurologists are NOT my favorite people. They might be brilliant but I've yet to meet one with any intra-personal skills.
Diane, I'm sorry you are going through this

Re: I feel like my world is caving in....
We've been through EI and they won't make a diagnosis. They will offer the services that he qualifies for, but a diagnosis needs to come from your own doctors. I would visit a developmental pediatrician. Or maybe try going to The Cody Center, although they don't take all insurances and it's expensive ($1200 or so). I tried that route, but couldn't afford the evaluation so DS is 9 and still has no diagnosis. His neuro said possible PDD along with ADHD in the past, but her eval was really based on reading his EI reports and observing him briefly and she never gave him a concrete diagnosis. So since EI his "label" has changed from orthopedically impaired (for motor skills)" to Other Health Impaired, to Multiply Disabled and now I think it just says ADHD.
Sorry I'm rambling! I would try to get an appt. somewhere else for a diagnosis, but in the meantime I would try another agency for the EI eval. and give them your previous reports. And just remember, you don't necessarily need a concrete "label" to get your child the help he needs, my son is a pretty good example of that and has made remarkable progress with the help of services he has received for the last six years.
