I have a question for my SIL...Re: weaning off the pacifier

SIL is going through hell with her DD. She is 5 months old, cries every hour at night because pacifier falls out...

She wants to get rid of the pacifier. Anyone go through this? Any recommendations of what worked for you??

TIA!

I [ersonally think 5 mths is a little young to wean the baby off the pacifier, why is she so against it?

However, Id like to see the responses too because Id like to start weaning my 17 mth old soon..

Re: I have a question for my SIL...Re: weaning off the pacifier

My Ped. said if you get rid of the binki before a year they will not miss it. At DD's 8 month visit he told me to try. I did it at 9 months and I have to say she did not seem to miss it at all. Maybe the baby just needs to get a little older? Or maybe the binki isn't the only reason the baby is waking initially???

Re: I have a question for my SIL...Re: weaning off the pacifier

We did it at a young age. At 5 months old, she won't even miss it and the habit isn't too far in. We did it cold turkey, just took it away one day. She only fussed for about 2-3 days and never looked back. The first night was the only night we had an issue with getting her to sleep, but she only woke up once and then nothing the next two nights.
My DD only used it for naps and nighttime and was doing the same as your SIL's baby. She'd wake up once an hour or two cause it fell out. some mom don't mind getting up a couple times a night to give it back, but not for us. She just has to do what she thinks is right, but if she does decide to take away, throw out all the paci's and don't look back, nothing's worse then putting the baby through a weaning process then giving in, it will undo everything.

GOod luck to your SIL

ETA: My DD was 8-9 months old when we did it and it was LONGGGGGGgg overdue to wean her.

I don't think it's that she has a prob with a pacifier..its that she recently starting waking up every hour when it dropped out of her mouth. SIL is PT working now and can't keep running up to give it back to her. She wants her daughter to just sleep through the night without waking for it.

Yeah, there may be other reasons, you might be right! Not sure. Maybe teething?? My son started teething at that age...you never know.

we did the same thing & I agree - they are too young to "miss" it now.

My DD does a similar thing -- fusses for her pacifier about 4x/night (not when it falls out - more she semi-wakes up and needs it to soothe her back to sleep). It's really frustrating now that she's in her own room (it was really easy when she was right next to me in her bassinet!).

Is the idea just to ignore her when she fusses for it? What if she doesn't stop fussing? (I have tried ignoring but she gets more and more upset)
