My doctor was very explicit about this. AFP is just an assessment of risk, it is not telling you anything about the actual health of your baby. It assesses risk so that you know if it is worth while to go for follow-up testing. Most women who have abnormal AFPs have healthy children. Some of those who have normal AFPs do not. for you and your baby that all goes well.

janine, thank you so much for that update.
i truly, honestly believe that you are right - that nothing is wrong with your beautiful baby. the results (when yu compare them to alllll the other test results) just don't make sense.
i totally understand why you would be apprehensive about getting an amnio - only you and your DH can make that decision. i have no idea what i would do in your position - but i guess we can't really know until we are there, right?
you have only a few more weeks until the ultrascreen, and although the nurse did point out that this would only be another screening test, not a diagnostic test, it should give your doctor (and you) a better idea of what is going on - so you can make the decision to have an amnio at a later date if you want.
sooooooo many coming your way - you are just an amazing woman, and so strong, and you are going to be the most amazing mommy.

Thanks for the update!! I've been thinking about you all day/night.
The decision of an amnio is entirely up to you and your DH and it sounds like you have given it a lot of thought.
I do believe in letting your instincts guide you, which it sounds like you are doing. Just hang in there, we are all here for you!

My husband and I have been thinking of it this way:
Our son, who had anencephaly, the doctors were 200% sure. They told me that if there was a chance they were wrong, they would not let me give up that baby. For my husband and I, that was the hardest decision I EVER want to make.
This child, the doctors say this is just a screening, that shouldn't have even been done. It makes me wonder, if it is God telling us we should be looking into it further, OR if it is just a fluke.
There is no way that my husband and I want to do anything to this baby to put it in harms way, and from everything else we've seen, and tested, this baby is perfectly fine. We will see what the genetics counselor says and take it into consideration.

I am glad you are feeling better and that the nurse you spoke with sounded confidant as well that nothing is wrong. I truly believe in a mother's intuition and if your gut is telling you this baby is healthy then I am sure s/he is I KNEW something was wrong with my first pregnancy since day 1 and this time around I am fearful but I don't have those gut feelings and everything has been fine, thank God.
You are still in my thoughts and prayers every day. When is your level 2?

I think at this point, I have to go on about my buisness...I can't spend 3 weeks miserable when nothing could be wrong. That would just make me depressed.
I will do my best to be myself again--like I said, I am convinced nothing is wrong. Even the symptoms of Trisomy 18 don't match.
Baby can't suck well-our's sucks fingers
Small head, bad development of brain-we've had our doctors taking EXTRA measurements of the head.
Small in body-Our baby is measuring a week ahead in size
Clutched hands and malformed-our baby waves and we can see all fingers non-malformed
Club feet-they looked at the feet-no problem there
Heart, having holes-our babies heart is working fine.
Of course they need to do an anatomy scan, so far nothing matches up.
