I need to stop reading the pet board
I can't deal with the posts from people who are getting rid of their pets. It is sickening.
How anyone could just give up on an animal is beyond me.
Sickening.

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
it may not be by choice. if the spouse or children are allergic, they can't really keep the pet in the house. they just want the pet to get to a lvoing home

It just does not seem like people exhaust all options before giving a pet away.

if it was between my child/spouses's health over a pet, i would want to find a loving home for the pet. i don't want to put there health in jeopardy

i have to agree. i think people in general don't take pet ownership as seriously as they need to. its a lot of work to own a dog or cat.

I had a 19 year old Siamese cat when I met my husband. My husband was allergic to cats. I told him he either needed to see a Dr, or we would have to live seperately. I had my cat since I was 3 years old, there was no way I was giving him up for anyone. There are options for every situation, whether it be training, allergist visits, etc.
Giving a pet away is just crap, im sorry.

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
I agree. I feel like people just jump into getting pets without realizing the responsibility it entails. I could NEVER give my cat away no matter what- it would devasatate me. There are ways to deal with allergies- as an allergy suffer who owns a cat I can attest to this. It just takes work...but my kitty is worth it in my eyes!

What bothers me to no end, is when people move to an apt or coop that doesn't allow dogs so they have to get rid of them. I want to scream at them find one that allows your animal.

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
the way it goes is this
pets are a very sensitive topic to some people, their pets are their kids so it becomes very delicate.
So, for anyone looking to give a pet up for whatever reason, is better off doing their own research and doing what is right for them.
When you post about it, instead of getting help, you're going to get flamed. Some people are very passionate about their pets.

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
FH & I had to bring our first dog back to North Shore... he bit my mom pretty bad It was the hardest thing we ever had to do. He was a tricky dog to work with but we were trying so hard, but we had to throw in the towel when he bit my mom. It was terrible, so in a way, I can understand why someone would have to give away an animal, it's such a tough decision to make

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
i agree with Don. if youre actually going to get rid of your pet please at least dont POST that you are.
and if you do feel the need to post it, dont be surprised when you get flamed.
ppl are always so surprised how "mean" others are. in hteir eyes they think they are doing a good thing by not dumping it off at a shelter. (someone please give them a medal)
but i think we can ALL agree nothing good comes out of those posts.... i have yet to see ONE post like that where someone on here actually adopted it.

I understand some of what you guys are saying, but at the same time - you just aren't in these peoples shoes. It's easy to say "I would Never" but you just don't know. If my dog went after my child - sorry, the dog goes. If I had to move and find another place - it's EXTREMELY hard to find a place that willl even allow cats, no less a dog. I didn't get a dog until we bought our house for that exact reason. But, I personally went through a situation where I had to leave an apartment that I was in with my cat for seven years - could not find another place that I could afford which would take the cat, and had to give her to someone. To this day, I suffer from the guilt of that experience. And I know she went to a good home and the man who took her loves her, but I still miss her. I think it's actually admirable that these people aren't just dropping the animal at a shelter...they are consciously trying to find a good home.

agressive dogs are somewhat different though. some ppl just post "im having a baby so i need to get rid of my dogs" thats not giving it a chance.

not questioning that at all
i don't know the feeling
what i am saying, is it is a controversial topic and if you're going to post it, be prepared to get flamed
if I were in their shoes and I had to do something like that, I wouldn't post about it

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
I agree-but then I think about the fact that if someone doesnt want a dog anymore-they are probably not going to give the dog the care that they need and should have. If they can find a loving home who will be able to care for them (and this site with such passionate animal lovers is a good place to start) then it is better than them keeping the dog and not loving it, not giving it what it needs.
*** thanks to a very special someone, I was able to find long term pet sitting on LIW*** I am not giving my dog away-so it is a little different-but this site can be helpful to people who want to find a loving home for their pet. I didnt want to leave my baby with just anyone and these sites are a good place to start...I
wouldnt want people to not post cause there have been people who have helped others find them homes
(sorry for the long winded response)

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
I am giving the kitty that we found to a good home...I knew we were not going to keep her from the day that we found her. I just did not want her to be another stray cat and we were lucky enough to find her a good home once she can eat on her own. I do feel bad that we have to give her up and I will miss her but we were not looking for another pet

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
I think it is dependent on the situation. I am involved in a situation right now where I am preggo and dh LOVES his 2 bunnies. DH came with these 2 bunnies...It was not my choice. Now given the circumstances that hes been working round the clock and will now have a newborn...HE will have to take the time to care for these bunnies. I cant do it with a newborn plus he chose the responsibility of keeping his bunnies. In no way, shape or form am I trying to make him give up his bunnies but he needs to figure out how to tadjust his time. I dont think its fair to the animals to not get the attention they need.
