Re: I need to stop reading the pet board

I love my dog. I couldn't imagine my life if I had given him away - and I do not think I ever would.
That said, I've noticed that passing very harsh judgment on people has become the norm (or perhaps it is just fashionable because it is considered edgy and "honest").
You have no idea what it's like in someone else's shoes - you cannot know what it's like to live someone else's life.
Giving a pet away cannot be an easy decision. I do not think berating someone because he or she has made that decision is going to talk them out of it. Suggestions and recommendations should be the first course of action (re-action). Eye-rolling and head-banging takes the conversation/thread down a negative path and prevents open discourse. Also, it impedes any kind of aid to the person/animal in distress. too
well i am going to have to just disagree with this in its entirety...
I can understand if people went on a thread that was started by someone looking to give a animal away
BUT IT WASN"T
It was started as a topic to discuss.
Some people can be judgemental...some not.
BUT who the hell are you to say that they are not allowed to express that opinion?
YOU may agree, you may not. But THIS THREAD here was a topic of DISCUSSION...
EVERYONE is entitled to say how they feel..
I may not know what it is like to have to give a dog away....BUT NEITHER DO YOU....YET you feel that YOU are entitled to speak YOUR opinion...YET OTHERS ARE NOT? Hypocritical i would say.... edgy? honest?.....potato? tomato?
You can label the opinions anything you want...IT IS STILL AN OPINON
didn't realize that only CERTAIN topics were allowed to be discussed

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
OK- I just reread the previuos post (that I quoted) like 3 times.... Show me WHERE it says you cannot express your opinion?
I was applauding the fact that I agree with the post- that it is unfair that people eye-roll and personally attack those that post they are needing to find homes for a pet. I applauded that because those behaviors are COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. I don't consider put-downs and flames to be opinions. People can disagree without being nasty.
We all love animals on here. And yes- it SUCKS that their are some people who are unable to fulfill the commitmant they agreed to when adopting/buying their pet. But rather than flaming away, why can't the more zealous people put their annyance aside and try to help that person find a home. Or at least express their opinion without being nasty? Insulting someone isn't going to make someone whose made that decision change their mind.
This comparison is a bit extreme, I know- but sometimes I truly feel that the "mob mentality" on here is almost like the protesters outside Planned Parenthood shouting at women to "keep their baby". No solutions to the problem are offered, just jumping in the person's face.
True, at times solutions ARE offered, but many times they are hidden by the insulting posts that offer no support, no help. The posts that are just there to be up on their high horse, passing judgement.
I think people need to accept that not everyone views their pet as "their baby". To some people, pets are a material item; to others, they are a part of the family dynamic; to others they may be a functional part of life. I am an animal lover- have been my whole life. That said, I do not consider my animals "my children"- but I do love them very much. I don't however, begrudge those who do view their pets differently than I do.
Wow- long. Sorry about that...

I totally agree with this...I really think that if some of the posters who flame a person would ask around, more pets would find homes. I know there were a couple of posts in the past where I would ask anyone I knew if they were interested in a dog or cat to help find the animal a new home. This board is supposed to be about "helping" and sometimes I think we forget that and end up using a thread for a soapbox instead of giving useful information or assistance.

I think that we are talking about flames on the "I need to get rid of..." threads - since this was a discussion about those threads.

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
I am not trying to be mean to anyone, and I don't think that anyone else "set out" to be particularly mean either or "flame" anyone. It's just that some excuses to give up a pet really baffle me. Like giving up a pet because a child, who isn't even conceived yet, may have an allergy to it. That's just rediculous, IMHO. These are things that you cross that bridge when you come to it...if you come to it. If someone in your family has an allergy to it (DH, child, etc), and you know this before you get involved with an animal...then DON'T get involved with an animal...PERIOD. If you want to help, then capture, spay, release. I would never get involved w/ a cat...not because I don't love them, because I do...but my DH is so horribly allergic, I know we would never be able to keep it. I don't necessarily have a problem w/ people comming on here to at least TRY to find a good home for the animal...it's better then abandoning them. I have heard stories where people have thrown animals out of moving cars!

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board
I think posters should know and be prepared for every type of opinion/response possible.
Yes, in an ideal world it would be nice if every response contained the great idea without the editorials but it's not going to happen. LIF is a cross section of people/personalities/real life that you will get the response you are hoping for mixed in with some you are not.
The OP has the best solution -- if you know it's going to bother you, don't go there.

True...and I think it's kind of interesting. The different points of view, that is. I also think that these points of view are better expressed in a post like this as opposed to a "I need to find a home for my..." post.
My final though on this matter is that
I only wish every pet found the proper "FOREVER" loving home for him or her

but i think we can ALL agree nothing good comes out of those posts.... i have yet to see ONE post like that where someone on here actually adopted it.
Actually, that's not true - someone on here adopted a cocker from someone who had posted about it. It was almost a year ago and I remember when the woman who adopted the dog posted about it. Sorry, I can't remember the parties involved.
It does work out sometimes, though.
Hi all! I just stumbled across this very long thread, and although I only got through a few pages, this caught my eye! Last March I adopted a cocker spaniel named Snickers that was posted on this website. We love Snickers so much and he is a part of our family now. I know that it seems that so many people get rid of their pets too easily nowadays, but I would much rather them post that they are looking for a good loving home for their pet than drop it off at a shelter, or even worse keep it, but not give it the love and attention it deserves. I hate when people have to give up a pet, but I would never flame anyone for it because I am not in their shoes! I am so happy that I found Snickers on this site! Some good does come out of these postings. He is my son's best friend! Image Attachment(s):

It makes me so sad every time I see a post of someone getting rid of their pet.
