I woudl think that the Pet Board could be a good resource to getting an animal a good home. To me it is so much more important that a pet find a good, loving home than to judge someone and tell them that they are wrong for "getting rid" of their pet.

If for whatever reason, someone needs to find a home for their pet or a stray they found, isn't it more important that people post about it and work towards finding that pet a good home rather than not post because they are worried about getting flamed? What do you think will happen to that pet if they don't find a home for it?

I would think its in the pet's best interest to be in a loving home and if posting here helps find that pet a good home, then that is a good thing IMO.

ETA: Do you think that if someone doesn't post about it, it means they will keep the animal? As someone who has seen someone open a car door and throw a dog out and drive away, the most important thing should be finding the pet a good home IMO.

I completely agree. I'd rather someone work toward finding a good home than dropping them off at a shelter because they're afraid of posting.

I agree that you should exhaust all methods before giving away a pet - and I know people feel that their dog is their "baby".

The fact is that most of you don't have children and dog. IMO having a dog as your baby is not the same thing as actually having a baby. It would be interesting to hear from dog owners/moms as to whether or not they would give up their dog if it became agressive toward their baby. Sure I would try training, but in the end, if it's my child vs dog, child wins every time.

Most of the time...that is all posts. Not everyone agrees with everyones posts and people misconstrue what others are trying to say. I think if a person wants some good info they are gonna get it from the few people that take them seriously. I would rather sift through info. then not get it at all. Besides people send FMs all the time with great info...even when they are being flamed on a public board. Its just how it works out.

I love animals - both dogs and cats, but i'm HIGHLY allergic to cats!

when dh and I knew we'd be living together (and eventually get married) - we knew we'd have to make some adjustments when it came to me living under the same roof wiith his pet of 12 years, Stevie...an american tabby who weighed 16 lbs - LOVED LOVED LOVED Stevie, but after only being around him for 10 minutes, I'd be a WRECK!! itchy, watery eyes, sneezing uncontrollably - it was BADDD!!!!! We did EVERYTHING, vacuumed everthing everyday, even bought a commercial grade room air purifier!!! nothing helped. I was a mess everyday, and wasn't getting any sleep - I remember being up till 3 or 4 in the morning, unable to breathe, wheezing, etc....
It wasn't until I was six months preggo with Sofia, I suffered a SEVERE asthma attack and was hospitalized, that we realized Stevie and I just couldn't live under the same roof anymore. Chat Icon It was a VERY difficult thing for us to do, but for the sake of my health, and the health of our unborn child, we decided to bring Stevie to my FIL in Puerto Rico! It took him some time to adjust, but after a few months, he was literally living it up like a fat cat in the caribbean!! Chat Icon
Unfortunately, he passed away about a year & 1/2 ago. Chat Icon

At least Stevie stayed in the family. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm a mom/dog owner. As Nrthshgrl said, if it was child vs dog, the child wins hands down.

However, I do think that a lot of people treat their pets as disposable and get rid of them for ridiculous reasons. Is the pet better off in the long run? Maybe but you don't know where they will end up a lot of the time. It should never actually get to the point of getting rid of the pet because you don't want your floors scratched or you don't want to have to bathe them. Those reasons show that the petowner really didn't make an informed decision and may need to become a better, more responsible decisionmaker.

Currently, I have a 11 week old baby and two dogs, a JRT and a border collie mix. The border collie could careless about the baby but the JRT is not that great around her. He gets very nervous and upset when she cries and he has nipped in her direction. Will I get rid of him if he bites her, maybe but to prevent that situation, I'm working with him. It takes a little more work and energy but it's worth it. I don't want to have to get rid of him and I am making the house more friendly for him.

It's a lot of work having pets and a baby but that means that I have to divide my time more wisely. I have to vacuum instead of posting sometimes because of the dog hair. I have to forgo some luxuries like getting my nails done so the dogs get groomed. Things like that. I made the commitment to them and I will stick with them unless it became unsafe for my child. Prior to adopting them, I made sure I really knew how I felt about the responsibilities of having a dog so I went in prepared. I wish others would do as diligent a thought process before making a halfa$$ed commitment to their pets.

I think this is exactly the way most of us feel. You are willing to give extra time to your dog and have divided up your time differently to try & make it work. I guess I just wished more people did the same.

Re: I need to stop reading the pet board

Yes it is too bad that some people feel there is no other option than to give away a pet. I am the proud owner of many pets and could never imagine giving any of them away. I have know a few people who had to give up pets for many reasons: allergies, behavoiral problems etc. It does not mean that they don't love the animal. An I don't think any less of them.

HOWEVER: I think that if you do have to give your pet away, isn't it better that these people come to this site and look for good advice on where they can take the pet (such as no-kill shelters) or even if one of us would be willing to adopt and or pass the word on about the up-for-adoption pet. I feel that this is much better than just letting them out on the side of the road as MANY people do.

For all you people who get so offended by people who have to give a pet up for adoption....how many of you bought your pets from a pet store or a breeder for hundreds or even thousands of dollars??? Just because it HAD to be a Purebreed or one of those silly "pure-breed mutts", like snoodles or what ever they are called????

If you are offended by people giving their pets up for adoption and you bought your dog or cat then who is worse? You could have adopted a dog or cat in need for free. Buying pets is what makes shelters full, becuase not enough people are willing to adopt.

I love my pets, but there are far more serious problems in the world than people who decide that they can no longer take care of their pets! And I do not think that these people should be chastised on this site, when they come looking for good advice on what to do.

We are here to help, if you feel bad for these pets then help the original poster find a good home for the pets. I'm sure that the poster had their reasons and the reasons are not for us to judge.

For those of you who did adopt a pet, this is not meant towards you.

THis is all JMO, I do not mean to offend anyone. I jst feel that sometimes people can be very unfair to people about these tyopes of issues.

imo you cant compare buying from a pet shop to getting from a breeder, but if anything ppl who buy form a pet shop are often the ppl who give away their pet b/c they buy on im[ulse not realizing what work it is.

Puppylove, not for nothing, but your argument make no sense! you say that its the fault of ppl who buy pets that "makes" the shelters full.....
not if you KEEP your pet!

its people who get rid of their pets that fill up the shelters! regaurdless where the dog came from

(you can adopt a dog from a shelter and still get rid of it)

Buying form a breeder is just as bad as getting them from a pet shop! People are buying the animal are they not??? They are not adopting fro m the breeder. Breeders overroduce dogs and cats for $$$ gain, not for love. Empty the shelters into loveing homes, then produce more. If people need to give up a pet it is there decision, let them be. It's probably hard already without people judgdging them.

I agree- My baby is due in three weeks and we have two dogs we ADORE. If either of them were ever aggressive to the baby we would have to find them a new, loving home- end of story. We are lucky that my parents could take them. If not, we would do everything possible to find them a loving home- but they could NOT stay in our house near the baby if we were at ALL insecure about the baby's safety.

The other issue is about allergies- allergies can be very severe- and you can't live on antihistamines every day. If my child developed an allergy to the dogs we would try and allergist- if that didn't work, what else could we do? however, we knew before we got out second dog that if these problems happened down the line when we had children that my parents could take out dogs.
