I Should Get The Worst Mother Of The Year Award
I am sick to my stomach over this. I could have overdosed my baby girl, but thankfully I didn't (or if I did she has no signs at all and its been almost 24hrs).
I obviously misunderstood what piggy backing Motrin/Tylenol meant and I always "thought" the the inital does you give together, then start alternating 4 hours later Tylenol, 6 hours, Motrin, etc.
Why did I screw this up? So maybe 3-4 times that she has been sick I initially gave her the Motrin and Tylenol for the FIRST dosing at the same time, my poor baby!
Now I know to space it out 1-2 hours, right?
So mad at myself

Re: I Should Get The Worst Mother Of The Year Award
This is the reason why new research suggests alternating motrin and tylenol is dangerous, and advice to peds is not to advocate it. Its really can be damaging for the kidneys and liver.
Imo, I wouldn't alternate at all. Choose 1.
Don't beat yourself up, though, we all do what we think is best with whole heated intentions. Just get your facts straight, consult your ped, and move forward.

First off, she's okay so that is what matters most. I would ask the pediatrician for clarification on what they want you to do.
For my youngest DS, who at 16 mos has been sick with high fevers for the past week, we're alternating Motrin and Tylenol every 3 hours so he is getting a dose of the same medication every six hours. 12 and 6, he gets motrin and 3 and 9, he gets tylenol. Again, ask your DC's doctor for dosage and timing of doses.

She is fine. I know when DD had really high fevers our Pediatrician told us to alternate Motrin and Tylenol. It is confusing so I'd ask them specifically how to do it.

Motrin and Tylenol are 2 different medicines. You would only be overdosing if you were giving her the same medicine too close together...And yes, the dr.should explain it more clearly...

i did it the other day....dd was in her car seat on the lie when she hits me with "Mommy, we need to pull over and stop..." I ask why and one of her buckles came out (and she knows she is allowed to only open them when we are parked somwhere so it was totally me )....she told me it was "an emergency and we cannot drive anymore" in her dramatic tone as she was franticallly trying to rebuckle the bottom part while almost hyperventilating(she can't get it in herself for some reason, only out!) and I felt like the worst mom too...but also a good one too I guess since she was crafty enough to know it wasn't okay...
it happens to us all, you are a great mom who entertains me daily on fb!!

This is true. I have brought my DS to the hospital a few times because he gets high fevers, up to 106 and even if I gave him a dose of motrin at home only 1/2 hour before getting to the hospital they give him tylenol.
It's 2 different medicines. If you give an initial dose with one and it doesnt come down an hour later you can give the other.

Re: I Should Get The Worst Mother Of The Year Award
no way! DH and I both gave DS a full dose on tylenol when he was like 9 months old. He was double dosed within a half hour bc we didnt communicate to the other that one of us had already done it.
We PANICKED! Needless to say, we called poison control and our ped, and both said not too worry, that he will be fine, and he was/is.
I hear ya though, we felt like the worst parents ever.

Re: I Should Get The Worst Mother Of The Year Award
I once ate a good amount of baby aspirin. My mom was giving it to my brother - it smelled like oranges and I was really little and jealous that I wasn't getting any. Well, I took care of that problem, stole the bottle, and ate the rest... I was fine - they took me to the ped, everyone was panicking, and I just took a really long nap (which the ped said I would). I wouldn't advocate doing this obviously, but accidents do happen and often without any lasting damage...
