I was laid off and now feel terrible (parenting related)

I havn't been on a lot recently (or for a while really) b/c I've been very busy at work - and now I've been laid off and I'm really upset about all the time I worried about work stuff and not been with DD- she is 20 months. For example, it was only last week that she had her first real bout with the stomach flu and I left her with my mom - but she really wanted me. She LOVES my mom, so it really tells you how sick she was that she wanted to stay with me over my mother. I didn't stay b/c I needed to get work done at my job.

Now I've been laid off and feel sooo guilty about leaving her that day in particular. I mean, she was really sick, and it killed me to leaver her. I left work as soon as I could to get back to her...but now that I've been laid off, I feel like the sacrafices i made throughout my time there were not appreciated and I shouldn't have wasted my time and broken DD's heart - I'm so sad about it... Not looking for advice- just hugs- I'm reallly upset...

On the upside- you should see more posts from me looking for advice as to what to do with a 20 month old!

there is no way on earth she will EVER remember this.....it's eating you up - but it will get easier..

When I was pregnant, and when Cailen was a newborn, DH worked 6 days a week and was gone from 4AM to 11PM every day. He was sick, exhausted, and miserable, but we had to do this for our family.

When he got laid off, he was devastated - not so much about losing the income, but all the time he sacrificed and missed with his family. I told him it had to happen so we could eat, live, and survive. You are a good mommy!!! You wanted the best for your baby!!!

He took a job with less hours and now he is with us more. Hopefully you will find the same and it will all be worth it. the universe told you "enough" and now will present something else for you!!!

I was laid off last January. When it happened, I was kicking myself for all the times I left my sleeping, awake, crying, laughing, sweet, not so sweet, insert other emotion her, child at home with the nanny. I could not, for the life of me, understand why they didn't understand how much I gave up for coming into work and how much I gave up at home. Well, the reality is, you are just an employee to them and they are just a business! It is so unfortunate that you had to be at the receiving end of this but look at it as a blessing that now you get to spend some time home with your little one that you can never get back

Try not to beat yourself up. Think about how you will change things going forward when you get a new job.

You did what you could at the time and she knows you love her.

I'm sorry you got laid off - but if you're looking for things to do - we're up for playdates!

I remember that feeling and it sucks. I was laid off six months ago and felt the exact same way. As time went on I realized she didn't remember things the way I did. I was working because I felt it was the right thing for my family. Don't beat yourself up and enjoy this gift of time with your daughter that you have been given, even if it is only for a short period of time.

Jen I hope you are able to overcome your feelings of guilt because you are a great mommy! You did what you thought was best and now you can enjoy, really enjoy, your time with Megan!

Plus you know she won't remember being sick at all, but she'll treasure this time she has with you

Thank you girls for you kind words and support. I am definitely going to be more careful about the next position I accept!

Hindsight is always 20/20. At the time you did what you thought was best for your family and your child.

You were being a loyal, hardworking employee.

As the PP said, your DD will never remember this.

enjoy your time with DD now!

I know how hard it is not to feel guilty when you have to work and they are sick. I only this year finally understand that I can work my tail off and really no one appreciates it where I work. In fact, you can do whatever you please around here and get away with it. SO I take off more, even when my kids are just feeling a bit off, since I think they are more important.

But don't beat yourself up about it. You did what you thought best at the time and although its like a slap in the face now by getting laid off anyhow, your DD won't remember being sick. Only you will!

I really don't know where I am going with this post- only that I understand how you are feeling
