What about if your child steps on a rusty nail, etc.? Do you just hope the child doesn't develop tetanus (which can be deadly)?

Or, god forbid, your child gets a second degree burn? I had to get a tetnus shot at 14 b/c I burned with boiling water at my high school.

These disease do not have outbreaks b/c of the vaccines. I really think that we all grew up without these disease, so a lot of times, we don't know how severe they can be. Ask your grandparents about polio, read about FDR.

Of course I don't want my child to have to get shots, but it is for a greater good when he is older.

Don't even ASK about all of the shots my husband got when he was in the ArmyChat Icon

There have been many good points on both sides of the debate, but I just wanted to point a few things out.

Someone asked why is it so bad not to get vaccines, since unvaccinated people do not usually get the diseases. That is known as herd immunity- they do not get the diseases because OTHER people got vaccinated and stopped the spread. If the balance gets tipped, and too many people do not vaccinate, you will see fullblown outbreaks again.

The other thing is regarding the "mildness" of the childhood diseases. It is true that most were routine in the past, and most people had no complications. But the complications can be terrible. And while chickenpox is just a bother for most kids, not being immune in childhood means you may get it during pregnancy- and that carries a risk of DEATH for mother and fetus, a risk of missing limbs for the baby, vision problems, mental retardation. True, rubella is a mild illness for the children, but an un-immunized pregnant woman may catch it and the child has a high likelihood of deafness and mental retardation.

you know what it totally s ucks being so paranoid about everything (the bottles with bpa, shots etc)... I am wondering if parents in the past worried as much as we do? Chat Icon are we too overprotective of our children, I have no clue but I see a difference between myself and my husband... he constantly tells me that our ds is healthy and to stop worrying about so many things...
