Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

So tragic, but it needs to be watched so that people know where their food is coming from.

I am also very close. I stopped egg & cheese sandwiches. I only use almond milk.
I do eat fish my husband catches but that's about once a month. No more tuna either.

I just can't be a part of the abuse/torture/killing.

I am also doing almond milk and coconut milk.. (the later isn't as heavy I find)

Also doing green drinks and alkaline water...

That was hard to watch. What I especially don't understand is how unnecessarily cruel and mean the workers are to these animals. Stomping on their heads, bashing them on the floor........that is so sick. Chat Icon

I can't say I will give up meat, mainly because I like so few veggies and I am soooo picky, but if nothing else, I will start to think twice about where the meat I buy is coming from. Poor animals, I do feel so bad for how they are treated. I don't know why people have to be so inhumane throughout that process. Chat Icon

The guy I work with is a health teacher and they are watching Food Inc. I asked the huge meat eater if it makes him think twice about eating meat because I haven't seen it yet and he said what it makes him do is buy Organic only. I know if I watch it I will go Vegetarian. I hate the abuse.

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

I remember the first time I saw this. I don't watch many of these kinds of videos; watching them was THE reason why I went veg about 20 years ago. My interest was piqued because of Paul McCartney's involvement in the documentary. I can't watch it again...I'll end up making myself sick if I do. The title of it is so incredibly true, though. The content is yet another reason why we should ask questions about where our food supply comes from.

I understand that people want to eat meat...and there are more humane ways about getting it. In my ideal world, yeah, everyone would be a vegetarian. But thats not going to happen. However, if this video makes even a few people review their consumption of meat and where they purchase it from, and they maybe switch to buying from a local farmer who allows their cows, or pigs, or chickens to live a decent life, outdoors and whatnot....then its a success in my eyes. Because while I don't want to see any animal be killed, I know that its going to happen, and allowing them to live a viable, meaningful life for years before they are killed for meat is just so much more dignified and respectful and loving and conscious than anything that goes on in the disgusting, horrific meat industry.

Things like this truly make me question humanity. Many of us eat meat - that's no secret. But to unnecessarily TORTURE other living things, and prolong the killing/dying process? How can anyone with a conscience do things like this? Humans are so evil sometimes, it's horrifying.

I'm the opposite. I've given up fish, but I have so much trouble giving up cheese. I only drink soy milk/ use soy butter/ soy cream cheese, BUT the cheese is the hard one. I barely ever eat eggs, so that was no big deal.

I always say that if you aren't ready to give up meat reduce your consumption and buy organic when you do eat it.

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

As a McCartney fan (life time fan) I am curious but also know his (and his late wife's) support of being a Vegan. No way I could watch that video. Even for Paul.

I am a meat eater. Do I wish we had better sources for it? Yes.

I eat meat and I am fully aware of where it comes from and I accept that. I'm not watching the video, but I will say that I just had a conversation last weekend with a girlfriend who is a Pollution Officer with the Environment Agency and she has raved to me about the cleanliness and humane practices of some local abbatoirs and how impressed she was with what she was seeing and how she was happy to be eating meat from these places. Not all abbatoirs are the same.

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

I am not vegan or vegetarian however I am a huge believer in knowing where my food comes from.
I became so fascinated with it about 6 years ago I decided to create a more sustainable life. I have a small flock of egg laying chickens, I had a pretty large garden that produced all of the produce my family needed from may to September.
I also stopped buying grocery store meat and poultry at that time. I buy organic, all natural or kosher products or I buy shares from local farms.
I did not watch this particular video but I read tons of books and watched other videos on the topic. It's really disgraceful. Our government is so corrupt that these slaughterhouses have nothing to worry about. The big commercial poultry producers are flat out lying about no antibiotics/steroids in the chicken. They feed the chickens genetically altered corn and grain so the drugs are still there.

I personally do not believe on a scientific level that humans have evolved enough to be vegan, but I support people that have made that choice. I am just about knowing as much as possible where my food comes from.

That is so cool that you raise chickens. DH wants to do this but alas, our yard is a typical Queens one: postage-stamp sized and mostly concrete. And whats not concrete is growing veggies and herbs.
One of these days, I'll be a mother hen. Chat Icon

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

You should read Michael Pollan and Joel Salatin.

Joel Salatin owns Polyface Farms in Virginia, where the animals are raised "near" organic and humanely treated and slaughtered. If you are concerned with these videos, stop eating CAFO beef and go local and grass fed. Its better for you and the environment and certainly for the animal.

That's great that you are a responsible consumer. I went Vegan this last October and I will never go back to meat. That's what works for me and I would never push my beliefs on anyone else.

It doesn't really concern me that people want to eat meat, that's fine, but to not know where your meat comes from,
what is was fed, or how it was treated is a shame. As a society, we have become far removed from thinking about how our food gets to our plate.
