Who friggin cares if the video is 4 years old? What's the problem here? People are talking about the cruelty that went on and STILL goes on. Watch the movie Earthlings narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.

Are you paying for this post by page or something, Andrew? What's it to you that people are talking about it 3 pages deep?

Careful now...What's the circulation date on that Joaquin Phoenix video? We don't want something too out of date. Might be accused of sweating OLD NEWS. Chat Icon

Sad , but I think most people who eat meat and eat/drink dairy products know where it's coming from, I do , but I could never be a vegetarian, not for me, maybe I'm a horrible person but I like meat and I love milk & dairy products, so does my family.
If my kids decide to become vegetarians down the road that's up to them ...

I'm with you in that I don't want to stop eating meat or dairy, there is NO WAY anyone is cutting cheese from my diet Chat Icon

However, I think just being aware and trying to make small changes that can help and I don't mean to stop eating those things. When you buy eggs, try to get the organic kind. Same with meat and diary.

My biggest complaint is the price. Buying organic is VERY expensive so I try to scout out places having sales and go with the "store brand organic. Like in Stop N Shop, they have Nature's Promise. It's not as expensive as the other name brand organics but it's definitely not as inexpensive as the "regular" stuff.

I try to buy that when I can, but if funds are low that week, I get the regular stuff.

Like I said, I think it's just being aware and trying to do something about it, even if it's a small thing but don't feel bad for eating meat and dairy. I sure as hell don't! Chat Icon

Agreed. we can't afford to always buy organic, but we try ...

I have to tell you I am super duper close to going Vegan.. My only problem is I like fish. I can give up cheese, dairy & eggs.. but the sushi..
ugh

I'm the opposite. I've given up fish, but I have so much trouble giving up cheese. I only drink soy milk/ use soy butter/ soy cream cheese, BUT the cheese is the hard one. I barely ever eat eggs, so that was no big deal.

Just a question-
I can see why people don't want to eat meat- because it involves killing an animal.
But why do people go vegan?
Like what is inhumane about a cow producing milk- for milk, cheese, etc?
It doesn't harm the cow right?
I am truly asking out of curiousity- not being snarky or anything...

It would seem, based on what I saw in the video, is that they keep the cows constantly pregnant so they are always producing milk and then they hook them up to machines to milk them multiple times a day which causes pain and mastitis. It looked really cruel. The cows tummies were all bloated and hanging. The poor cows looked like milk factories. It was hard to watch. I'm guessing that is why someone might have an issue with dairy.

Again, my answer is just based upon what I watched in the video. I am not vegan, I do eat meat and dairy.

OK.
Yeah I didn't watch the video because I coudn't watch something like that.
Makes sense now.

Then the babies that are products of the pregnancy become veal calves. I saw this first hand living in Vermont.

while I am nolonger 100% vegan, I eat a few dairy products and get my eggs from a local farmer.

You can ASSUME they are back to their old ways.. but they were bought out by an entirely different company. and im sure since that video was released 4 yrs ago.. they have been monitored. There was even a proposal to put web cams on their slaughter floors to be monitored by an independent firm.

All im saying is its not worth getting worked up over old news.. not to mention its PETA propaganda... its as ludicrous as this billboard...

IMAGE

Its marketing.. its all skewed to make the intended audience believe the message they are pushing...

Not that I want to get into the politics of it all, but since you mentioned propaganda, the Got Milk? ads come to mind for me. The meat and dairy industry are multi-billion dollar industries. They have a product to sell and they do it very well.

I only stopped eating meat 3 years ago after reading Skinny B!tch. dh was like Chat Icon but accepted my choice. My mother keeps saying i'm in a 'fish fog'.
So yeah, people definitely have their opinions on my choice and of course I tell them to just google this stuff and do their own research. Especially animal lovers. How people can reconcile it within themselves is beyond me, but maybe someday they'll just say omg gotta stop contributing to this.

A word about the renet. I had no idea about that until a co worker said something to me about it. I started eating kosher cheese (by nature no rennet) but then decided to just stop eating cheese altogether.

I have issues with PETA, they are extremists. But this video is on point.

and this is why I follow the Vegan and Paleo diet.

No soy because it can be very bad for you and no pasta/processed foods because well, just yuck as far as health is concerned.

I eat almost 100% raw, whole foods. And supplement with Sun Warrior protein or the the Vegan formula of Shakeology by beachbody.

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

It is true that the company in question was among the worst. Part of what makes it particularly messed up is that kosher slaughterhouses are generally much cleaner and more humane than non kosher. I believe it is extremely rare to find a kosher plant with those conditions.

During my quest to learn everything there is know about raising chickens I became a member of a community like LIF for chicken keeping. The poultry industry is really disgusting. Most people I know eat more chicken than other types of meat and I don't think anyone would ever buy Perdue or Tyson again if they knew about the lives of those chickens.

My chickens are not 'broiler chickens ' they are laying hens however it's still basically the same bird.
It took my girls over 6 months to start laying eggs and they were not fully mature or the size of an over stuffer roaster until they were one year old. They have always eaten an organic diet that is high in omega3
Broiler chickens get so pumped with various chemicals they are usually slaughtered in10 weeks! In fact members of the community I belong to that live near the poultry slaughterhouses have actually set up rescue organizations because the chickens are packing into huge crates for transport and the regularly fall off the tractor trailers and are left of the road to die.
When they are found they are BABIES getting ready to be killed. In a couple of short months their beaks and sometimes tongues have been clipped so they can't fight, their combs(the red thing on their head) is so swollen from a poor diet and drugs and it usually has to be surgically
removed, some of them are blind, some of them have deformed legs because the got so heavy so quickly.
It is so disgusting that these birds end up in a shiny package that is the most popular meat product in the country.
For those of you that are buying all natural or organic chicken breasts, have you ever noticed how much smaller they are? In order to get boneless breasts the size of the average Perdue package you would need about a 10 pound chicken. My hens are 6 years old, they live a completely luxurious life with unlimited food and they only weigh about 8 pounds.

I could go on all day about it but I won't Chat Icon
If you are interested, google broiler chicken rescue or Tyson chicken rescue. As a side note, I know someone that was threatened by a poultry company for trying to spread the word about this situation.

That was hard to watch. What I especially don't understand is how unnecessarily cruel and mean the workers are to these animals. Stomping on their heads, bashing them on the floor........that is so sick. Chat Icon

I can't say I will give up meat, mainly because I like so few veggies and I am soooo picky, but if nothing else, I will start to think twice about where the meat I buy is coming from. Poor animals, I do feel so bad for how they are treated. I don't know why people have to be so inhumane throughout that process. Chat Icon

they are some sick bastards working in these places

Beyond sick!!!!!! I had no idea. Those workers disturbed me the most. How do they live with themselves??? How can people treat anyone that way???? Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think it was in eating animals and the author worked at a slaughterhouse for a few days and he found himself feeling violent, etc. some kind of reaction to being around all of the blood, cruelty, working conditions screws with your head.

Why do you say this? Anything eaten in extreme amounts can be bad, but there are numerous studies that support the beneficial effects of soy on cholesterol, heart health, cancer protection etc. If you are talking about heavily processed soy protein isolate, that is a different story.

SOY, CORN, and WHEAT are the top foods that are genetically modified. Look up GMO's. Or watch the movie Food Inc.

Is there credible evidence that GMOs are harmful? I have soy in my diet actually more so because I am allergic to dairy (not intolerant, allergic). I buy non-GMOS soy products mainly because I believe Monsanto is DESPICABLE.

I believe it was John Robbins who said you vote everytime you use your fork.... or something like that. The food industry all in all is a corrupt business. Monsanto is evil. My college friends told me about Monsanto 15 yeqrs ago. It seems these days that no matter how you eat, you are contributing to pain, suffering, and exploitation.

I do vegan and add elements of Paleo such as no beans, no soy, no processed things like bread, pretzels, candy, etc. They acually complement each other nicely. It is just a very strict way of life.

Im sure there are studies. But is it just a coincidence that when Monsanto started genetically modifying foods, there has been a HUGE increase in food allergies and intolerances?? Especially gluten, and peanuts?? Soy is not tolerated by many people and I know my son cannot.
There havent been any studies showing that GMO's are SAFE??
I know anything that contains corn, such as corn chips we buy organic.
