I am not vegan or vegetarian however I am a huge believer in knowing where my food comes from. I became so fascinated with it about 6 years ago I decided to create a more sustainable life. I have a small flock of egg laying chickens, I had a pretty large garden that produced all of the produce my family needed from may to September. I also stopped buying grocery store meat and poultry at that time. I buy organic, all natural or kosher products or I buy shares from local farms. I did not watch this particular video but I read tons of books and watched other videos on the topic. It's really disgraceful. Our government is so corrupt that these slaughterhouses have nothing to worry about. The big commercial poultry producers are flat out lying about no antibiotics/steroids in the chicken. They feed the chickens genetically altered corn and grain so the drugs are still there.
I personally do not believe on a scientific level that humans have evolved enough to be vegan, but I support people that have made that choice. I am just about knowing as much as possible where my food comes from.
That's great that you are a responsible consumer. I went Vegan this last October and I will never go back to meat. That's what works for me and I would never push my beliefs on anyone else.
It doesn't really concern me that people want to eat meat, that's fine, but to not know where your meat comes from, what is was fed, or how it was treated is a shame. As a society, we have become far removed from thinking about how our food gets to our plate.
How they are fed is HORRIBLE. I only buy grass fed beef. Cows WERE NOT meant to eat soy , corn, ONLY grass!!!!

I have to tell you I am super duper close to going Vegan.. My only problem is I like fish. I can give up cheese, dairy & eggs.. but the sushi.. ugh
I'm the opposite. I've given up fish, but I have so much trouble giving up cheese. I only drink soy milk/ use soy butter/ soy cream cheese, BUT the cheese is the hard one. I barely ever eat eggs, so that was no big deal.
Just a question- I can see why people don't want to eat meat- because it involves killing an animal. But why do people go vegan? Like what is inhumane about a cow producing milk- for milk, cheese, etc? It doesn't harm the cow right? I am truly asking out of curiousity- not being snarky or anything...

It would seem, based on what I saw in the video, is that they keep the cows constantly pregnant so they are always producing milk and then they hook them up to machines to milk them multiple times a day which causes pain and mastitis. It looked really cruel. The cows tummies were all bloated and hanging. The poor cows looked like milk factories. It was hard to watch. I'm guessing that is why someone might have an issue with dairy.
Again, my answer is just based upon what I watched in the video. I am not vegan, I do eat meat and dairy.

Some people would argue that the life of a dairy cow is as bad as the life of a meat cow. They are constantly artificially inseminated via a very painful process ( the device that does it known as " the rape rack" in the industry) As soon as their calves are born they are immediately taken away. The girls are raised for milk and the boys immediately taken to be slaughtered for veal. The repeat pregnancies and constant milking leaves the cow with frequent mastitis and painfully engorged udders. The conditions they are kept are deplorable too. They spend their lives in a tiny stall where they are unable to walk in a circle or graze the pasture. They hoofs are often so damaged that they can barely walk. Finally, when they are spent of milk, they are taken to be slaughtered. A terribly sad and cruel life.

SOY is so bad!!!!!
I couldnt watch this video
Why do you say this? Anything eaten in extreme amounts can be bad, but there are numerous studies that support the beneficial effects of soy on cholesterol, heart health, cancer protection etc. If you are talking about heavily processed soy protein isolate, that is a different story.

SOY, CORN, and WHEAT are the top foods that are genetically modified. Look up GMO's. Or watch the movie Food Inc.

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...
Yeah, no. I got about 10 seconds in and when I saw the cow hanging writhing around I closed the screen.
I can't watch it.
The whole thing makes me sick, it's a vicious cycle.
For the majority of folks buying organic or into a share of a cooperative just isn't realistic. It's VERY expensive and not easily accessible. Going to the grocery store is and these HUGE companies know it.
Also, don't kid yourself, it's not just the food companies in this game. Pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer have a stake in it too. Pfizer has an animal division. They provide the drugs given to the cows and chickens.
It's SO big, you don't even know.
And then there's the government's role. What a joke.
Until a big enough stink is made by the public at large NOTHING will happen and these HORRIBLE practices will continue.
The whole situation sucks.

It is videos like this that made me go vegan. I was never a big meat eater so granted it wasn't that hard. It breaks my heart that this is going on. Everyone has the right to eat what they choose. Just wish these poor animals did not have to suffer so bad because of it

I will start by saying that I am not a nutritional expert by any means and that I am speaking generally about what I have learned about the meat and dairy industry.
I don't eat dairy primarily because of health reasons. Humans are the only mammal that drink another mammals milk. Also, humans are the only mammals that drink milk as adults. A mother's milk is meant to provide nutrition for babies to help grow and develop. Adults drinking milk is just strange.
Dairy cows are pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones to keep them "healthy" and to produce a ton a milk. Personally, I don't want to drink milk from a cow that is being given hormones and antibiotics because, after all, you are what you eat. This is not even to mention the poor quality of food they are given to eat and the disgustig conditions they live in.
The same goes for chickens and eggs. They are often kept in tiny cages with swarms of other chickens. They have little room to move and live in their own feces. Just like humans produce a chemical called cortisol when stressed, so do animals. I don't want to eat anything that comes from a hormone-full, mistreated, stressed out bird.

Sad , but I think most people who eat meat and eat/drink dairy products know where it's coming from, I do , but I could never be a vegetarian, not for me, maybe I'm a horrible person but I like meat and I love milk & dairy products, so does my family. If my kids decide to become vegetarians down the road that's up to them ...

I'm with you in that I don't want to stop eating meat or dairy, there is NO WAY anyone is cutting cheese from my diet
However, I think just being aware and trying to make small changes that can help and I don't mean to stop eating those things. When you buy eggs, try to get the organic kind. Same with meat and diary.
My biggest complaint is the price. Buying organic is VERY expensive so I try to scout out places having sales and go with the "store brand organic. Like in Stop N Shop, they have Nature's Promise. It's not as expensive as the other name brand organics but it's definitely not as inexpensive as the "regular" stuff.
I try to buy that when I can, but if funds are low that week, I get the regular stuff.
Like I said, I think it's just being aware and trying to do something about it, even if it's a small thing but don't feel bad for eating meat and dairy. I sure as hell don't!

OLD NEWS....
That video was shot at Agriprocessors in 2008....
That company is mostly known for Kosher processing of cattle....
They were also on the hook for...
Pollution Child labor Immigration cases Financial fraud Anti-competitive practices among other things...
On November 5, 2008 Agriprocessor filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Factors cited included a loss of most of the workforce due to the May 2008 immigration raid, declining demand for the firm's products, and increased costs in the aftermath of the raid. The Associated Press reported that “Agriprocessors in its bankruptcy filing said the company owed $50 million to $100 million to creditors. The move appears to be an effort to pre-empt foreclosure by a St. Louis bank, which sued Agriprocessors for defaulting on a $35 million loan”.
In December, the bankruptcy court approved a $2.5 million loan for Agriprocessors to allow it to resume poultry processing through at least January 9, 2009 (about 750,000 chickens). The company was run by Chapter 11 bankruptcy trustee Joseph E. Sarachek of Triax Capital Advisors. Agriprocessor's problems led to a shortage of kosher meat and higher prices nation-wide. Empire Kosher, the largest US producer of kosher poultry, doubled its production capacity in response.
Agriprocessors was bought at auction in July 2009 by SHF Industries, a company formed by Canadian plastics manufacturer Hershey Friedman, an observant Orthodox Jew, and his son-in-law, Daniel Hirsch. The plant has resumed business under the new name Agri Star Meat & Poultry, LLC

What's your point?

You can ASSUME they are back to their old ways.. but they were bought out by an entirely different company. and im sure since that video was released 4 yrs ago.. they have been monitored. There was even a proposal to put web cams on their slaughter floors to be monitored by an independent firm.
All im saying is its not worth getting worked up over old news.. not to mention its PETA propaganda... its as ludicrous as this billboard...
Its marketing.. its all skewed to make the intended audience believe the message they are pushing...

Not that I want to get into the politics of it all, but since you mentioned propaganda, the Got Milk? ads come to mind for me. The meat and dairy industry are multi-billion dollar industries. They have a product to sell and they do it very well.

Regardless of whether not the video is old or that this company was bought out these things are still happening everywhere. I am sure they are just one of many companies who are treating animals so inhumanely.
I eat meat and dairy and even I was BEYOND appalled. Even if it is "old" news I'm sure it's still happening and it's sick. Will I stop eating meat and dairy? No. (just being honest) But I will try to be more aware of where it's coming from at the very least. That video was an awful eye opener, at least for me. Totally sick and cruel.

Well, the way I'm apparently assuming they haven't changed you're assuming they have.
And just because it was proposed that there be web cams on their slaughter floor doesn't mean it actually happened.
I don't see anyone getting worked up about old news. These practices STILL happen, perhaps not at that specific plant (though we don't know for sure) but these things ARE still happening in other plants.
I'm personally not a fan of PETA, I feel they have other agendas but to solely point them out as being the only ones to use propaganda is really short sighted on your part.
Beef, it's what's for dinner. Pork, the other white meat. Got Milk?
Those are ALL marketing campaigns.
So again, I ask, what's your point?

Yeah, Im not going to watch that.

I still eat meat...its so sad for the animals but its how its been for many years. The way they are treated now isnt fair...but noone really knows whats going on or if things changed. So theres really no debate other than this is not new news.
People are inhumane...same goes for how they treat pets, dogs, cats, whatever. What SHOULD be done is a higher level of punishment for animal abuse. I mean someone kills someone and its jail. A kills an animal and they get in minimal trouble.

I HATE stupid hyperbolic, bull shit questions like this. No. I haven't gone out and conducted my own studies, nor have you. But I watch the news, read the paper and various articles online that have given me the reason to believe these practices are still happening.
I'm sure you'll say the same for your POV. Fabulous.
Now can we agree to just disagree?

Who friggin cares if the video is 4 years old? What's the problem here? People are talking about the cruelty that went on and STILL goes on. Watch the movie Earthlings narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.
Are you paying for this post by page or something, Andrew? What's it to you that people are talking about it 3 pages deep?
