Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

I can see that altering the foods could change the proteins and lead to an increase in allergies because it's now a totally new chemial composition our bodies aren't used to. But if you're not allergic, is it bad? I don't know. Like I said, I avoid GMO soy anyway because it's pretty much all Monsato, and i don't want any of my money going to them if I can avoid (which I'm sure I can't)

ETA: in terms of things not being bad for you unless you're allergic, you know how cans of diet soda have a warning about pheylalanine? So I alwasy assumed it was bad for you. However, my doctor has me on a phenylalanine supplement.

I have to say I love how informative this thread became. I already have seen every PETA video and agree they are so extreme to begin with. I clicked to see how it was so many pages. I am glad to see how many enlightened and intelligent people that are still on this board! This topic could teeter on drama, and most people on here really are contributing such important information and opinions. This is a topic that's important to me!

Forgive me for sounding like an idiot, but what is Monsanto? Also, how do you know if your soy is GMO or non GMO? Like if I buy shelled edamame at Whole Foods is that bad? I'm genuinely curious, and I'm really not as stupid as this sounds.

I was at her farm Friday. She won't have eggs really until the farmers markets. She does Kings Park, and a few other markets. I will update when she gives me more info. She is awesome!!!!

It is true that the company in question was among the worst. Part of what makes it particularly messed up is that kosher slaughterhouses are generally much cleaner and more humane than non kosher. I believe it is extremely rare to find a kosher plant with those conditions.

During my quest to learn everything there is know about raising chickens I became a member of a community like LIF for chicken keeping. The poultry industry is really disgusting. Most people I know eat more chicken than other types of meat and I don't think anyone would ever buy Perdue or Tyson again if they knew about the lives of those chickens.

My chickens are not 'broiler chickens ' they are laying hens however it's still basically the same bird.
It took my girls over 6 months to start laying eggs and they were not fully mature or the size of an over stuffer roaster until they were one year old. They have always eaten an organic diet that is high in omega3
Broiler chickens get so pumped with various chemicals they are usually slaughtered in10 weeks! In fact members of the community I belong to that live near the poultry slaughterhouses have actually set up rescue organizations because the chickens are packing into huge crates for transport and the regularly fall off the tractor trailers and are left of the road to die.
When they are found they are BABIES getting ready to be killed. In a couple of short months their beaks and sometimes tongues have been clipped so they can't fight, their combs(the red thing on their head) is so swollen from a poor diet and drugs and it usually has to be surgically
removed, some of them are blind, some of them have deformed legs because the got so heavy so quickly.
It is so disgusting that these birds end up in a shiny package that is the most popular meat product in the country.
For those of you that are buying all natural or organic chicken breasts, have you ever noticed how much smaller they are? In order to get boneless breasts the size of the average Perdue package you would need about a 10 pound chicken. My hens are 6 years old, they live a completely luxurious life with unlimited food and they only weigh about 8 pounds.

I could go on all day about it but I won't Chat Icon
If you are interested, google broiler chicken rescue or Tyson chicken rescue. As a side note, I know someone that was threatened by a poultry company for trying to spread the word about this situation.

I always love hearing about your girls.

I too only buy organic and sometimes kosher poultry.

Never ever buy Purdue or Tyson products.

I don't eat a lot of red meat or pork but when I'm eating out I will never know what chicken I am eating. Good restaurants may post that the serve organic chicken.

Monsanto is a company, which genetically modifies (engineers) food. They do this by identifying the gene of interest (a specific trait) and inserting it into an organism's genome so they now have the desired trait. The science behind it is actually remarkable if you think about it. Many times medicines are made through the use of GMO. These include things like insulin and human growth hormone.

Most GM foods are not clearly labeled as NYS does not require them to be.

I had my students research GM foods this year and also conduct an experiment to see which foods are GM. They had to write to their legislature stating their view on whether or not foods should be labeled.

Over 90% of all corn products are genetically modified in some way. This can mean that their roots are altered to resist drought or their leaves are altered to repel the corn borer which destroys the crop. I think it is fascinating that we are able to do this, but I do think foods should be clearly labeled with how they have been modified.

Other examples include: Golden Rice, which is shipped to developing nations. This is rice, which has been altered to increase vitamin A. Fishberries, which are strawberries that have been altered using a gene from salmon that reduces the chances of strawberries freezing during a frost.

As of now, the science behind whether or not these are harmful has not been adequately studied.

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

The science behind GM is cool, but what Monsanto does is regulate what farmers are allowed to grow. They can only buy Monsanto seeds. They must only purchase through them. If they are dugout growing their own seeds, they get fined. Sometimes crops spontaneously spread and create their own little seedlings. This can get farmers in trouble. Almost every non organic farm is controlled by Monsanto. this is my stupid understanding of this, at least!

Re: If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls...

My DH and I keep a kosher home for religious reasons, and thus, have limited options about what meat we buy. I have seen several comments on this thread about kosher slaughterhouses generally having better conditions than non-kosher, which makes sense, since part of being kosher means that the animal is slaughtered in a humane fashion. However, does anyone know of any resources where I can research and find out which companies truly have humane practices? I didn't watch the video, but I'm concerned to hear that it was a kosher company that had such inhumane conditions.

To the best of my knowledge, Kosher companies don't treat the animals any better than non-kosher companies. The only thing is different is the means of slaughter. There is a some good information on this website about the practices in kosher farms: http://www.veggiejews.org/about_veggiejews
Also, I know that Empire meats has a kosher, organic line. Maybe consider this?

I was curious so read a little about this diet. Some of it makes sense, as far as eating plant-based and unprocessed. The thing I don't get is that if we ate like people did 10,000 years ago we would ONLY be eating what is local to us -- AND seasonally. I just cannot imagine getting the proper nutrients this way, but maybe I'm wrong. For example, yes eat as much fruit and veggies, seeds and nuts as you want, but if we ate like what was around then, you'd be limited to apples, in the fall, berrries in the summer, etc. You wouldn't be eating bananas in NY. Where do cashews grow?? What do you eat in the winter? I'm guessing the meat that was hunted and fish, right??
