If what happen in japan happened hear what would you do?

I have a client in Japan. We email each other every day. She was in Tokoyo when the earthquake hit. The schools are closed this week and there is a holiday next week. So she basically packed up her family and are in Bali now. I honestly can't say I blame her but she is worried about what her friends/ neighbors will say because she chose to leave and not stay. I honestly feel better she's not there as I was really worried since I didn't know how she was.

Would you leave? Go to another country or at the very least go to a part of the country that is uneffected? I think if I had the money and I thought we were in danger I would leave, I would probably leave even if I didn't have the money?

If there was no one/nothing to keep me here, I would leave, especially in light of the food and water shortages, the weather. The threat of radiation poisoning would be enough to send me packing.
I might be called selfish, but I wouldn't want to be a burden on a society that is so drained of its resources right now.
The food and water and placement in a shelter that would sustaine me and my family could be used for someone who really needed it.

I have colleagues in Japan and some are doing the same thing.

she should not worry. they said on the news this morning that many residents of tokyo were either going south or further west.

I would be OUT. as far as we could get. with as many family members as I possibly could.

I guess that is the difference in culture in Japan maybe? Friends and neighbors there would judge, but here, in the USA, you'd have packed airports, streets, buses and trains with people trying to push past one another.

But to be honest, if I had the money, I'd be long gone until I knew it was safe to come back. If anyone judged me, I wouldn't care.

I am pretty annoyed that LI doesn't have any means of evacuation outside of going west. We need to get a bridge or two to Connecticut.

Radiation hurts young children more than adults so considering I have a toddler, I'll definitely move further south or outside the country if relatives will take me in.

The question is how long do you stay away? Until the radiation problem is solved or until there's a risk of losing your job if you don't return?

I would do the same as your friend. If i could find a way off this island and get my children to a safe place, that is exactly what i would do. I vowed that when i became a parent, I would always put my children's health and saftey 1st.

Depending how far is safe enough we would pack up and head upstate to my BF's family. And probably bring my parents, bro/SIL unless they go to other family.

I am lucky that I can work from virtually anywhere.

Regardless, this scares me.

I happen to live about 20 miles from San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in Orange County, CA.

I still don't really know what I would actually do! I have all my immediate family right here in about a 6 mile radius of each other. It's a real possibility for sure. the plan is to leave to AZ where my sister lives in Prescott. I guess it all depends on how fast and safe it is to get out of here~

I pray we will never have to live that scenario.

I am really praying and paying attention to what the people of Japan are going thru and what they are doing to handle it.

We'd never be able to get off Long Island, not for this kind of tragedy. If you had something you had notice for - a Hurricane - yes, traffic would SUK, but you could make an attempt at leaving.

I'd leave temporarily if my house was destroyed and/or high levels of radiation were being emitted.

But I would come back to rebuild my life here.

I'm a NYC girl at heart, born and raised. Still live here. I couldn't leave my beloved city behind.

For an earthquake or tsunami, I'd do the best I could to leave the area but given the logistics of LI, I'm sure we'd all be screwed.

With a nuclear power plant in a precarious state, I wouldn't care if the government "cleared" the area & said it was fine. I'd get my family & we'd be living as far as we could until I was comfortable with it was safe.

Working down in Ground Zero was "safe" until it was deemed unsafe. We have friends out on disability from the residual effects from that. I don't have much faith that anyone really knows the full effects.

We would probably relocate, temporarily, to live with family in Israel.

I would probably get to Mac Arthur and hop on the next plane anywhere and proceed from there. If we had too we could walk to that airport, its just a few miles away.
The other option would be to go hop on a ferry either at Port Jeff or Orient pt.
I would try to convince all my family to leave as well, but my immediate family comes first. Driving off this island is probably not an option.

yes I would leave (and I know DH would agree) . My DD comes first and then comes everyone else... We would do whatever is best to protect our DC.

Depending on how severe the threat was I would either go to FL with DH's family or Italy to stay with mine.
