I can't wait for this thread to end.

Me too and yet I can't stop posting. It is like cybercrack Chat Icon

it's going to make me need a xanax!! which i can't take right now!!

ETA: not your posts... just the thread in general.

where is that pic of the tombstone that says this thread is dead or whatever it says??
that should DEF be resurrected right about now!

actually I thought it died a while ago... but someone went and brought it back!!

I'm sorry Chat Icon That was me. I just couldn't help but comment on the person who alluded to the fact that teachers don't need more than a BA and 3x more teachers are in rubber rooms than classrooms.

actually I don't think it was you..... not the time i was referring to anyway.

and your posts made sense.

But as teachers... i know you know that there's just some ignorance in the world you can't change.

these people don't pay you. they don't listen. it's like talking to walls. a waste of energy.

I'm guessing they tutor math, science or SAT and I KNOW it's in a VERY wealthy district. What about everyone else?

Anyway, these discussions show that the state doesn't care about education as much as Long Islanders, which is why we have the best schools, which makes high property values, but also among the highest taxes.

If things continue the way they seem to be going, our taxes for schools may be lower, but I know they will be higher in other areas, especially incarceration.

The 1%ers have us fighting like crabs boiling in a pot, who think the other crabs are the problem, while ignoring the real problems they caused.

I'll get off my Chat Icon for a little while now, especially since I'm sort of a new poster.

It isn't in a very wealthy district, but they do tutor in Math.
I am sorry, but this discussion has gone on far too long. If teachers don't make enough money, find a second job like the rest of us. I make a salary, and if I need to make more money, I try to give more lessons. It is a sacrifice of time to my family, but it is what i have to do. Every job is necessary and no one is taking away from what a teacher does, but things need to change or else the youth today will not be able to live on Long Island. I love this place and I don't want to leave and I do everything I can to stay here, taxpayers are just looking for some help. If there is a way to knock my taxes down while paying a teacher more, I'm all for it!

The answer is getting the state to allocate more $ to an INVESTMENT in education (this is not an expense people) The more you invest the LESS taxes you'll have to pay for things like incarceration, fighting the "war on drugs" etc. The problem is that it takes a while to pay off, and in our society of instant gratification, that's not good enough.

Are you sick of highly paid teachers?

Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or10 months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit!

We can get that for less than minimum wage.

That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan-- that equals 6 1/2 hours).

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day.

However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.

LET'S SEE....

That's $585 X 180= $105,300

per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special

education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an

hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year.

Wait a minute -- there's

something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher's salary

(nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days

= $277.77/per day/30

students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!

Anyone who voted for the lower amounts is saying that the people that educate the children in your neighborhood don't deserve to live there.

Feeling that way is pretty disgusting.

I am not disagreeing with you, but I am not totally following you. Who is investing? How will this cut down on the "war on drugs" and incarceration. I am not being argumentative, I just don't understand. Thanks.

The taxpayers are investing. By giving kids a good education, they are less likely to get involved in drugs and ultimately get incarcerated.

So our state taxes would go to education and it would be less local taxes? I don't see how that saves me money?

I don't see how that relates to my question. If the state has to "invest" in education, wouldn't that make our state taxes go up? I didn't need a sarcastic comment, but if you want to go in that direction, all I need is a little push.

push.

jk as much as I'd love to spend my Friday night defending my career I'd rather spend that time with my DD and DH. Perhaps you should log off LIF and spend some time with your Slurpeekids and ask them how much they are learning from their teachers.

I will when my slurpeekid is born. I just want you to know that my question had nothing to do with you defending your career, it was just a simple tax question. That is all. Goodnight!

Wow - I had no idea I was THAT underpaid.... I guess an *almost* 6 figure salary after 15 yrs of teaching PLUS a Masters AND 75 credits beyond that sounds about right.... But I do love reading all the different responses. Makes for good entertainment. Chat Icon

LONGTERM, LONGTERM, LONGTERM!!!! Why do you think we have the highest incarceration rate, and therefore higher taxes, of all first world countries? It costs tens of thousands to incarcinate for a year, which means a life sentence could cost us as a society over a million dollars each. It would cost a lot less to give that child a quality education, especially in poorer areas.

We don't invest in education. Most people see it as a series of short term expenses. (Off topic, but by the way union basher's, the unions in other first world countries are A LOT stronger. Why do you think our middle class is getting smaller and smaller?)

An educated guess is that it would take about 14 years to see results. A few years shy of when the investment would pay off for your child to see the fruits of the investment and then have less taxes to pay.

If public school teachers work so hard and deserve so much money for molding young minds, how do you account for the low salaries and extremely high graduation to 4 year college rate that happens at Chaminade, St. Anthony's and other private schools?

If you fail two subjects and don't go to summer school, you get kicked out, so of course everyone graduates! I went to Catholic school.

I work in the one of the above named schools...and several of my students have been kicked out since this september because they were not passing. Therefore only the successful students are allowed to attend. And I can go into so much more, but won't.

And who is to say catholic school teachers should not make more.

Plain and simple-- public schools are just that PUBLIC and have to educate EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Private school-- you're a bad kid- you're out!
You're failing- you're out

So they get to keep on the best!!

Sounds like Utopia!

They have more power in that respect!

They also do not have to adhere to the same requirements as public schools because they do not receive direct funding from the state like public school.
