Re: if you could wake up and be fluent in another language...

Japanese, so I could understand what my students have difficulty with, whilst learning English.

I would like to use my German more, graduated with a degree and I lived there for a year (plan to move back in two years), but I havent used it lately Chat Icon . I can understand it and read it and can tell you all about the changes from middle high German to modern German, but my speaking is rusty. I can also read Dutch and Afrikaans, b/c they are both Germanic languages, so I would really like to try my hand at Japanese, b/c it is so completely different. I have a Japanese for dummies book, but it isnt in kanji. Maybe I will pick up a little when I go there in June.

Similar situation. My parents both were fluent in spanish (I'm puertorican) but never spoke it to me so I never really learned.

I would love to be better at Italian.

When I was a kid, my grandfather wanted to teach me to speak Polish, but I couldn't be bothered. Now I regret it, and he's gone. Chat Icon

I'd also like to learn Italian, and ASL intrigues me too. I know a few signs, but not enough to carry on a conversation.

Actually, that's the reason I wouldn't want to speak Spanish, I have no desire to know what they are saying. BEsides, the more people are able to speak Spanish, the more it will encourage some to never bother learning English.

I am fluent in Russian and English (or so I hope), so I chose French. I would than be able to read some of my favorite book in original language.

I used to know it somewhat but it's pretty much completely gone now!
