If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
I'm 38 and know I am considered advanced maternal age. So far, I had ultrasounds at 8 weeks, 14 weeks and 20 weeks. They want me to do another one at 24 weeks, 28 weeks, 32 weeks and then every week at 36 weeks on. It seems excessive.
How many ultrasounds did you have?

I turned 35 a few weeks before I became pregnant with dd2. I was still 35 when I delivered. The only diff between that and my first pregnancy at 33 was the verifi blood test at 11 weeks. Other than that scans were the same
8 week initial on appt scan for heartbeat 12 week nt scan 20 week anatomy scan 32ish weeks growth scan

This...almost lol i was almost 37 when I had my 2nd. Never had the 11 week blood test but did have a 16 week sono due to me having a leep procedure in the past. It wasnt done because of my age.

I was 37 when I was pregnant and had extra sonos at the end, but it was because I had GD.

No. age alone does not make you at risk. I had complications due to clotting issues but that was the only reason I had lots of apts. I was almost 39

I was AMA with my third baby. They treated me no differently than the "younger" patients, and I had the same number of ultrasounds. After the 20 week ultrasound, I only had the 34 week growth sonogram. That was it.

I'm under 30 and had more than that, it may seem excessive but I'm sure it's just for additional monitoring. I had ones at: 5 weeks 6 weeks 7 weeks 8 weeks 9 weeks 11 weeks 12 weeks 16 weeks 19 weeks 20 weeks
Now I won't have one until 30 weeks as of now, but I do have 24 and 28 week appointments scheduled but as of now I'm not anticipating an ultrasound and from 30 weeks on, they are doing weekly ultrasounds. Could be because I am having twins? But I guess every doctor is different and has their reasons for the scans they do!

Yes! My practice tried telling me I would be getting something like 22 sonos. I told them nope. I am not comfortable with that many sonos. I don't have a history of any problems so I do not consider myself high risk. They can't force you. They love us 35 year olds. They can charge ins co a lot per sono.

My first son required two heart surgeries when he was an infant so when I was pregnant with my second child, I did go for a full fetal scan that was more than a typical level II ultrasound. That was the only extra thing I did but I was under 35. This was at NY Presbyterian.
We live in VA now and I just switched practices because the first practice I went to only had patients see nurse practitioners. Their midwives deliver babies if you are having a regular vaginal delivery. I didn't like that so I switched practices and they referred me to a high risk obgyn for this ultrasound and that high risk obgyn wants to see me in frequently. I have a regular obgyn appointment at my new practice next week. I am going to opt out of all these ultrasounds.
I don't know how much an ultrasound costs but the one I had was super detailed. I swear the tech took like a thousand images. it was insane how long it took and how many images she took. tech and obgyn said everything looked good so I don't know why she wants to see me in so often.

Did you also start at a fertility clinic? You get a lot more scans in the beginning until you're released to your ob

If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
1st - yes bc I also had GD 2nd - not the extra growth sonos, but they did a quick check of the position often bc baby wasn't head down until close to the end. 3rd (I'm in my 3rd tri now) - I'm doing them because I also had a virus earlier in my pregnancy and I'm worried and that's what the high risk Dr. recommended. I'm hoping I can get them done at the same time as my weekly appointments. I really don't like the extra sonos, but having the extra risk factor on top of age, I feel like it's the best thing to do, to make sure baby is still growing ok.
I know one of the doctors in my practice recommends them for all AMA patients. The other Dr, who I usually see, isn't as insistent on them.

Re: If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
The only reason I had more at tbe end was because I had high bp starting in my second tri and baby was measuring small. Not because of my age. I also.opted for an amnio just because I wanted peace of mind

Re: If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
I'm on my third pregnancy, all past the age of 35. The first was just the normal ones already mentioned by others. The second one was more because of gestational diabetes. So far for the third, I've had the expected 8 weeks (done at 9 because of scheduling) and I have my NT scan tomorrow at 12+ weeks.
Did the dr give you a reason for all the extra sonos or is it because of age?

If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
For my first, I was 35 and only had a couple sonograms. For my second, I was 41 when I got pregnant. My doctor did a quick US at every appointment to check the baby and make sure everything looked good. I didn't think much of it really and chalked it up to my age.

Re: If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
I was 37 for my 3rd and 40 for my 4th - I felt I had a lot more for my last one. I don't know if the insurance allowed more or it was just easier to have them.

Yes- weeks 5, 6, and 7 were done at the fertility specialist, everything from the 8 week scan and on have been the OB. I'm not sure if it's the IUI thing or the twin thing or just my doctor. They haven't considered me high risk from what I know. Overall I have had (knock wood) a very healthy twin pregnancy with the exception of an SCH. That ultrasound was done in the hospital so I didn't even include it. It was also at 9 weeks

Re: If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
I had the same # (a lot) of Sonograms for my kids before & after 35.
My OB does them and doesn't charge me or insurance for the majority of them. He likes to see baby with each visit and is really good at them. They take less than 30 seconds and he just checks heart, head size, etc.
When I had an issue with my placenta, I really got ultrasounds... But that was at a special center (although my OB does high risk, he says these are top of the line machines).
I think that the frequency differs with practitioner.

I had more U/Ss with I was pregnant with my first (at 32/33 yo) than my second (34/35 yo). With my younger, I had 5, 6, 7, 8 (infertility), 12, 20, 32. That was it.

Re: If you had a baby after 35, did you get a ton of ultrasounds?
It does sound like a lot to me, assuming you have no other complications. Was that the recommendation of your OB or you are seeing a MFM doctor?
I am 31 weeks and having more frequent sonograms too. But other than being over 35, I also have some other medical complications and the baby's one kidney is mildly dilated. I think that's why I'm going every month now.

I had a lot with my first at age 29 because of GD.
Now with #2 at 33, I've had 9 week (horrible sono tech), 10 week (second opinion from 1st), 12 weeks, 16 weeks and another at 19. After that I am not sure.

I don't remember how many I had but I feel I got a lot. However, I was 38 yo and it was my 4th pregnancy (lost two at 7 weeks and one at 21 weeks) so I was ok with having extra scans.
