I was 38 when I had my son. I did not have any extra sono's. Amnio was never even brought up to us. I felt like I was treated like any other pregnancy. I should have been High Risk, for reasons unrelated to my age, and will be if I get pregnant again.

Yes! My practice tried telling me I would be getting something like 22 sonos. I told them nope. I am not comfortable with that many sonos. I don't have a history of any problems so I do not consider myself high risk. They can't force you. They love us 35 year olds. They can charge ins co a lot per sono.

My first son required two heart surgeries when he was an infant so when I was pregnant with my second child, I did go for a full fetal scan that was more than a typical level II ultrasound. That was the only extra thing I did but I was under 35. This was at NY Presbyterian.

We live in VA now and I just switched practices because the first practice I went to only had patients see nurse practitioners. Their midwives deliver babies if you are having a regular vaginal delivery. I didn't like that so I switched practices and they referred me to a high risk obgyn for this ultrasound and that high risk obgyn wants to see me in frequently. I have a regular obgyn appointment at my new practice next week. I am going to opt out of all these ultrasounds.

I don't know how much an ultrasound costs but the one I had was super detailed. I swear the tech took like a thousand images. it was insane how long it took and how many images she took. tech and obgyn said everything looked good so I don't know why she wants to see me in so often.

Were they able to tell that your first son had heart issues in Utero through Sonos? If that's the excuse they are using & they can't tell if your new child will have the same heart issue then I would question why all the extra monoriting?

Is extra monitoring a bad thing? What are the concerns? Do you pay out of pocket for it?

I was a high risk due to complications I had previously... I had a lot of ultrasounds and I honestly didn't mind at all. In fact it helped to ease my anxiety to know everything was going ok.

I was 36 when DS#1 was born. I don't think I had that many sonograms with him (I always loved having them, but there was no real reason.) After the results from the one where they check the fluid behind the neck and all that, I don't remember too many other than the one we did the day before I had him when the suddenly realized he was breech!Chat Icon
With #2, I had a lot. At the anatomy scan they thought his kidney looked a bit enlarged so I had ultrasounds at, I think, about every appointment until the end. I really didn't mide (well, except the copay) because I liked seeing him.
I do remember one doctor with #2 who talked about Advanced Maternal Age (I was 40 when DS was born) and he kind of irritated me with it. Chat Icon But I don't think they'd have wanted to do that many US if it weren't for the kidney thing.

With my second, I had a bunch of sonos. This third time, I only had them at 6 weeks, 12, 16, 20, 29ish (saw the baby was breeched), 32, 36 and 38

Yes, I did but I also had gestational diabetes so towards the end, I had sonos weekly. My DS was born a week before my 38th bday.

No. age alone does not make you at risk. I had complications due to clotting issues but that was the only reason I had lots of apts. I was almost 39

I also had a lot of sonos due to other issues, not just my age. I have 2 close friends who were 42 and 43 for their last pregnancies and they did not have all the sonos like I did at 38/39.
