If you have a 3yr old or 2 yr old that just started school this year (or BTDT moms) and were never in Daycare or in any kind of separation program before please come in.
Please tell me how often your child is sick - I'm talking about from the common cold, cough and runny nose and no fever to really sick. Thanks so much!

Very rarely - last year DD had I think 2 colds total. She was healthy basically all year. This year so far she has had 1 cold. Although I can tell you that many of the children in her class have been sick numerous times - so it might be her immune system. The parents at her school though are good about keeping their kids home when they are sick so things don't go around the class as much as I think most of them catch things from their siblings (many of her classmates have 2-3 siblings).

My son rarely gets sick. When he first started school (last year) he was sick 3 times the whole year. Once was a really bad stomach bug.
This year he has not been sick at all.

both of my boys started this year....2yrs and 3 yrs...and they are not sick alot...a couple of coughs and runny noses, but nothing back at all.
We have a family full of people who work with children, so I think that they were exposed to germs early on.

So I guess we are the odd ones out. I don't know if it is my DS or the school. I am going to ask my ped about it this week at my DD's well visit. DS is sick once a month. Now he was just sick last week and he is again sick now. He has never been seriously sick - just little colds with low grade fevers that last a day. Never even a stomach ailment or high fever. But, he often has a runny nose or a cough that lingers for a week.
The strange thing is before school he got sick ONCE per year - literally. We went to all the classes since he was 7 mo old so he was not living in a bubble. But, I was always there to wash his hands etc. The thing with school is that there are always a lot of sick kids there. HIs teacher told me last week they had 8 kids out - out of 21! And, he never washes his hands! 9/10 days when I ask him if he washed his hands b/f snack he says he forgot. I guess the teachers aren't that aggressive about it. Also, he uses the potty by himself - maybe he is not washing his hands well? And, he always has his fingers in his mouth!!!
I'm just getting worried here why he is always getting sick!

Maybe the preschool isn't being strict enough about that?
I interviewed some preschools for DD for the fall. The one I liked best so far told me that each child is escorted to the bathroom by an aide and they always make sure they wash their hands. And before every snack, they use Purell on each child. This was very important to me.
Is it strictly a preschool or also a daycare? Why are there always sick kids there? If parents are strictly enrolling the child for enrichment, they should absolutely be keeping them home when and if they are sick. It's not mandatory and absolutely needed if just enrichment. It's OPTIONAL so sick kids should be staying home. That's what the director told me.
Of course, I must note, I am not knocking daycare. But in daycare since parents work, there will undoubtedly be incidents where a parent does not have a babysitter and may send a possibly sick child into class regardless. So if strictly enrichment, the class should mostly be healthy children and if not, the school should be more vigilant in keeping infections down.

I wouldn't worry. My DD has been sick since Sept. (not even kidding) and she is not in school. She gets a week of feeling okay, then she is sick again.
At the beginning of the school year I gave them a big bottle of purell and asked them to make him use it. Speak to the teachers about making him wash his hands.

It's not a daycare. It goes 3's up until 3rd grade - it's a $$$$$ montessori school! I think it's part of their whole independance thing that they do everything on their own once they are capable of it. That said, I did talk to the teacher today and asked her if she could remind him to wash his hands before snacks.
I hear ya on the sick kids in school and I thought the same thing before DS started school and was always healthy. Now I will tell you - EVERYWHERE WE GO - playdates, birthday parties, soccer, music together etc. there are kids hacking with their nose running all over the place. The last bday party I was at a mother was giving the younger child tylenol before sending her off with the rest of the group! Unfortunately, I've learned, no fever - 90% of moms send the kids to school. I am in the minority.

I see. Sheesh. Handwashing should be stressed in every school. I specificsally asked the director of the schools I visited about this. I was glad to see the Purell out and see the aides in the bathroom with the children. My germaphobic self who won't be there to wash DDs hands was happy to see it is something they stress. I would def speak to the director.
Montessori or not, they should be making sure the kids do this.

Please tell me how often your child is sick - I'm talking about from the common cold, cough and runny nose and no fever to really sick. Thanks so much! unfortunately too much. I feel like DD is always sick since she started school in Sept She never got sick before, maybe a common cols once a year, just runny nose and mild cough (we took music classes and mommy and me from when she was 12 months to 3 YO) The first week of school it started and hasn't stopped since, it's always something, a cold, terribly congested, bad cough, ear infection I can go on and on... I feel like she gets sick every week , she gets a bad cold, it lasts for a week or 2, goes away and then just when I think she's gotten better she gets another cold, I feel like I;m losing my mindI asked our ped and our allergist, they said that up to 15 colds a year is normal first year of daycare/preK,school... I have also talked to other parents whose kids go to different schools and they tell me that their kids are the same way, always sick.... So I don't know...

He got a cold when he first started camp in July, then another when he started in Sept and one around December. Nothing severe for him and even my DD (she's 8mos old) didnt get anything too bad from him (she only even caught one of the three colds).

Kaydyn just started school in Oct and has been watched by my ILs since she was 2 months old.
She has been sick twice this winter (a lingering cold and then just recently strep and a double ear infection). Her little sister, however, has been sick since Oct. I don't know if it's just a coincidence or the germs Kaydyn is bringing home from school.
