If you have a temperature below 98.6....

should you be concerned? I've been sick since Saturday night (stuffy nose/head, sore throat). I took my temperature yesterday and it was 96.7. This morning I took it twice in a row and it was 95.5 and then 96.3. Should I be concerned?

Re: If you have a temperature below 98.6....

DW's normal temp is always below 98.6.

What type of thermometer are you using? Are you supposed to add any degrees to the readout to get the actual temp? Some thermometers tell you to add a degree or two based on how you take the temp.

DH's normal temp is below 98.6. I know he's really really sick when his temp is 99.

Are you positive your thermometer is not broken? Below 98.6 may be normal for some, but generally "normal" body temp doesn't vary more than 1 degree. An internal body temperature of 95.5 would indicate hypothermia in most people...

Retake your temp with a different thermometer, making sure not to drink anything hot or cold within 10-15 minutes of taking the reading. If you're still getting temps that low, call the doc.

Re: If you have a temperature below 98.6....

My normal temp has always been below 98.6 usually in the 97 range sometimes as low as in the 96 range. Mentioned it to my doc years ago and he wasn't concerned - everyone is different. If, however, your temp normally isn't this low then I would be concerned. Chat Icon

BTW, once I took my temp early in the morning when I first woke up about 10 years ago - and saw how low it was and googled it and it said what a previous poster said about hypothermia and I nearly freaked out - well i was alive and well and still here and pretty healthy 10 yrs later Chat Icon

You would have serious symtoms if it was in fact hypothermia, which is why I suggested that her thermometer may be broken or on its way out if registering a temperature that low.

Our bodies aren't designed to withstand a huge range of internal temps. A change of 2 degrees from someone's normal body temperature is a big change. Even if her normal body temp is 97, 95 would be very low. I cannot imagine someone's body temp lowering 2 degrees and the person not having any additional symptoms. I would try a new thermometer before panicking, especially if she's not turning blue. Chat Icon

My normal temp is around 97.0, I wouldn't be concerned unless it's below 95.0. Make sure you aren't taking it after drinking liquids. it has to be at least 30 min after. that alters the results.
