Make sure if you go with a resale that you are aware of the limitations (I.e. Cannot book adventures by disney, etc). I understand they can be a good deal but you have to be ok with what you can and cannot use it for. There are companies that deal with resales.
Most DVC owners will tell you that trading in points for Adventures by Disney or a cruise is a waste of points, and that you are better off renting them out and using the cash to fund a non-Disney vacation.
Buying on the resale market is a HUGE savings. For example, to buy DVC at Animal Kingdom from Disney is $150 per point. To buy on the resale market is going for $76-$96 per point on one resellers website - and those prices are negotiable.
What are some reliable websites that I could check? Do they also rent out for cruises or would I rent out as much as I need for a cruise?
The number one and number two DVC resellers are The Timeshare Store, (dvcstore.com) and ResalesDVC.com. Disney's recommended resaler is Fidelity. (fidelityresales.com). They are all reputable. They all have different inventory. Fidelity charges a $195 transaction fee that the others don't. You can negotiate for the seller to pay that, or at least split it if you are buying.

We have 160 points at Animal Kingdom that we purchased directly thru Disney in '07 and 2 years ago bought 200 points at Boardwalk for $12,000 thru dvcbyresale.com I highly recommend! We are considering selling our animal kingdom points because I want to add points at the new Polynesian when they open! If we choose not to sell I am still definitely purchasing more points here...disney is the BEST and everyone wants disney! You can't go wrong! It honestly is one of the (or 2 for that matter) best purchases we ever made! We have 2 girls, ages 3 and a half and 1 and a half! My one and a half year old has been twice, and we are going again in 3 weeks! My 3 and a half year old has already been 5 times! It doesn't get old!
