If you made your own baby food, did you do meats too?
My plan was to give organic jar meats and make everything else homemade. But I was just looking and don't see any plain meats made by Earths Best, only dinners.
I'm intimidated by the thought of making my own meats??
Any info or advice?

I tried doing my own meats in a puree and DS absolutely hated it - even when mixed with apples or some other fruit... we wound up giving him baked chicken in small pieces that he could gum to mush. He preferred that much more.

I'm going to skip puree meats and just give meats in tiny little pieces when my DD is ready for it. The thought of puree'd meat grosses me out.

Yes. My best tips - cook the meat in broth for a while b/f blending it so it is moist and tastier. Also, blend the meat with something that has a smooth creamy texture (sweet potato or peas) to mask some of the grainy texture.

It's really easy to make your own meats. I use recipes from Annabel karmel's book: top 100 baby purées.

Re: If you made your own baby food, did you do meats too?
I just made a chicken the other day. In a large pot I boiled cut up organic chicken, organic apples and organic sweet potatoes until everything was very soft. I then blended it all together with a little bit of apple juice (very minimal). I guess between the apples and sweet potatoes, it doesn't taste half bad, I did try a little bit. My babies really seem to like it. Next time I will try to through a green veggie in as well.
I also heard its really easy to make ground up turkey. I havent tried it yet, but I heard that turkey with an added fruit is pretty good.

Nope. At 8 months I just started giving her some small pieces of very soft meat, chop meat, chicken from soup I made. She doesn't have teeth, but I just made the pieces small and she gummed at them till she swallowed them.

Sounds yummy. Was the cut up chicken already cooked before boiling??
I make roast chicken a lot...could I just purée chunks of that with fruits/veggies??
Also, would you give a baby ground up chop meat?? I never use ground beef, usually ground turkey.
How do you give beef??

I pureed chicken once and was really grossed out by it so from then on I just gave chicken as finger foods. I would bake it (sometimes in chicken broth) and shred it.

- I have made purées using boiled chicken from chicken soup. I puréed with the veggies. You can give purées of roasted chicken w fruits or veggies. I wouldn't give ground beef. I use chunks of beef. You can make a beef stew for you and purée some for dc. Our ped told us to feed dd what we're eating to get her used to the tastes of our cultural foods. He said not to give Gerber graduates. He said kids need to learn to eat real food.
The purées I have made from annabel karmel's book can be adapted for adults!

Re: If you made your own baby food, did you do meats too?
Sorry if this is a stupid ?? But what about leftover?? It's just me & DH so when I make a meal we usually eat the leftovers for 1 or 2 nights after.
Do I need to make a new chicken meal every night for Dd or can I make a large amount & freeze like te fruits & veggies??

I make batches and freeze them, like w fruits/veggies. The meat purées can stay in the freezer up to 3 months.
I also made my own tomato sauce from a jamie oliver recipe from parenting magazine. DH and I ate it too! I can send u the link if u want.

Re: If you made your own baby food, did you do meats too?
I didn't make my own food but didn't give DC jarred meats.
My babysitter told me that DS needed meat - she suggestd chicken meatballs. They sounded very plain and gross to me so I started making 2 varieties for him. I split a package of ground chicken.
Chicken Parm: 1/2 package chicken petite diced tomatoes grated parm cheese breadcrumbs and seasonings to taste (salt/pepper/italian seasoning). 1/2 beat egg
Spinach & Cheddar Meatballs 1/2 package chicken chopped chopped spinach shredded cheddar cheese breadcrumbs and seasonings to taste (salt/pepper/italian seasoning). 1/2 beat egg
I mixed each and formed into bite sized meatballs. DS would pick it apart if it was cut so I had to make tiny ones.
I would bake them at 350 for a few minutes. When they were done, you can freeze them and just microwave for a few seconds and dinner was ready.

That's what I did. DS had no problem mashing the small pieces of meat with his gums. I gave him small pieces of whatever meat we were eating.

Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks everyone for responding. I feel better about it now after seeing your ideas & easy recipes & when I think of it Dd is already 7 months so she'll be able to have little pieces of meat soon enough without me having tO go purée crazy.

Re: If you made your own baby food, did you do meats too?
I tried one batch... and DD was totally skeeved by plain pureed chicken. I mixed it into a fruit or veggie that she had tried and liked, and she tolerated it that way. After a week or so, I gave her little bits of shredded chicken or sauted ground turkey and she was much happier.

Re: If you made your own baby food, did you do meats too?
I did only b/c the jarred meat grossed me out. I would use the crock pot. Mix it with veggies or some fruit. I used whatever I had at home..carrots, broccoli, swt potatoes, spinach, apples. I would puree it and as she got older I would shred it.

Re: If you made your own baby food, did you do meats too?
the twins have never eaten jarred food. Not because Im against it but because i would rather make everything fresh. When i make them meat I make it as if I would making a soup. Chicken soup or beef stew. I add anything that i would add to the original dish minus all the spices. So when they eat chicken it has chicken, carrots, squash, zucchini, potato, sweet potato and sometimes celery i boil it in half veggie broth and half water, throw it all in the blender and done. I freeze half of it and leave out enough for 2 days. I do the same thing with all the other meats too. I have not given them fish yet though. Im kinda scared. Now that they are getting older I am still blending things but i am letting it be chunkier. Just so they can get used to more textures. They are fine with it so far though

I'm only doing dirty dozen organic...I'll do organic meat if I can, but not mandatory to me.
I couldn't find plain organic jarred meats (only dinners). If I do jarred, then I do want organic.
I'm bookmarking this. Thank you everyone!!
